The following document details the virus definition update procedures
for:
* Norton AntiVirus 1.0 and 2.0 for Windows 95
* Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows 95
* Norton AntiVirus 3.0 and 4.0 for DOS / Windows 3.1
* Norton AntiVirus Network Manager

TIP: Be aware that there are now four different versions of
Intelligent Updater with different filenames! Read the section below
for more details. If you are receiving this update on a multi-disk
version of Intelligent Updater, the program files for Intelligent
Updater 1.7 are located on disk one, and on disk three for
Intelligent Updater 4.0. All other update files are located on disk
two.
=====================================================================
Intelligent Updater
=====================================================================
As part of our continuing commitment to fight the spread of computer
viruses, Symantec has developed a new program called Intelligent
Updater to simplify virus definition file updates. Intelligent
Updater locates Norton AntiVirus on your computer and installs new
virus definition files automatically. All you have to do is run the
program, then scan your disk with Norton AntiVirus. Later sections of
this document give step-by-step instructions for each Norton
AntiVirus version.
There are now four versions of Intelligent Updater. The newest
package is a version of Intelligent Updater 4.0, used to deliver
virus definitions for NAV 4.0 running under NetWare. The program
name, which changes from month to month, uses the following form:
mmNAyyN.EXE, where mm is the month, and yy is the year.
Another version of Intelligent Updater 4.0 is used to deliver virus
definitions for NAV 4.0 running under Windows 95 and NT. This is
named with the form:
mmNAyyI.EXE, where mm is the month, and yy is the year.
Intelligent Updater 1.7 is for all other versions of NAV. It is
named with the form:
mmNAVyy.EXE, where mm is the month, and yy is the year.
Intelligent Updater is also released on a set of three floppies. The
program file for Intelligent Updater 1.7 is located on your virus
definitions update disk one. The program name, which also changes
from month to month, uses the following form:
mmDSKyy.EXE, where mm is the month, and yy is the year.
Disk two contains the remaining files for Intelligent Updater 1.7
that could not fit on disk one. Disk three contains Intelligent
Updater 4.0, with the same name as the downloaded version, currently
named 04NA98Ia.EXE.
For example, 04NA98Na.EXE is the name of the latest Intelligent
Updater 4.0 definitions update for NAV running under NetWare.
04NA98Ia.EXE is the name of the latest Intelligent Updater 4.0
definitions update for NAV 4.0 for Windows 95, NT Workstation, and NT
Server. 04FD98a.EXE is the Intelligent Updater 1.7 definitions
update that is distributed on floppies for all other versions of NAV.
04NAV98a.EXE is Intelligent Updater 1.7 for download distribution,
which is too large to fit on one floppy. 04FD98a.EXE is also
available for download, to allow flexibility in updating many
computers at one site.

Norton AntiVirus 1.0 and 2.0 for Windows 95
=====================================================================
This product requires the use of Intelligent Updater 1.7, named
04NAV98a.EXE or 04FD98a.EXE.
Important Notice: If your HELP/ABOUT NORTON ANTIVIRUS menu option
does not say Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 version 2.0.1, you
should update it using the NAV 2.01 patch. This latest version of
the Norton AntiVirus adds password protection to the Options dialog
box and adds network alerting from AutoProtect and the virus scanner.
As viruses continue to be discovered with alarming regularity, the
NAV virus definition files have grown in size to counter the latest
threats. Applying this patch will ensure that your installation will
continue to accept of versions the latest (and largest) virus
definition files. Using older versions of Norton AntiVirus for
Windows 95 can cause false detections when the new virus definitions
are installed. This latest patch also adds support for Microsoft
Service Pack 2 (FAT 32/large volumes) and will be required to apply
all current definition sets.
Please download this file to a temporary directory and execute it to
extract the necessary files. Then click Setup to begin the
installation process. After applying this patch, you must also
update your virus definition set.
This patch is available for download from the Symantec BBS, the
Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, or America Online. You can
also call Customer Service at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.

(UPDATEME.EXE). As viruses continue to be discovered with alarming
regularity, the NAV virus definition files have grown in size to
counter the latest threats. Applying this patch will ensure that
your installation will continue to accept the latest (and largest)
virus definition files. Using older versions of Norton AntiVirus can
cause false detections when the new virus definitions are installed.
This patch is required to apply virus definition sets dated August
1997 or later.

drive activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical
files.
5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
definitions as well.
To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0/4.0 virus definition files from DOS:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Exit Windows entirely.
For example, from within Windows, select EXIT from the File menu.
2. Change to the directory or drive where you have the Intelligent
Updater program (04NAV98a.EXE or 04FD98a.EXE).
For example, type A: at the C:\ prompt.
3. From the DOS prompt, type 04NAV98a.EXE (or 04FD98a.EXE) and press
Enter.
4. Follow the instructions on screen.
5. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. Before you reboot
your computer, you must run a scan for viruses. Scanning your
drive activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical

Installing Virus Definition Files Manually
=====================================================================
If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus
definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to
extract the virus definition files, then copy the appropriate files
to the Norton AntiVirus folder.
To install virus definition files manually:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (04NAV98a.EXE, 04FD98a.EXE,
04NA98Ia.EXE, or 04NA98Na.EXE) to an empty, temporary folder.
2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command:
04NAV98a.EXE /DUMP
or
04FD98a.EXE /DUMP
or
04NA98Ia.EXE /DUMP
or
04NA98Na.EXE /DUMP
Virus definition files for all supported platforms are extracted
into the temporary folder.
3. Copy the appropriate files to the Norton AntiVirus folder. If
you are using Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows 95 / Windows NT
Server & Workstation, copy the files to this location:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming\
In addition, the file ZDONE.DAT needs to be copied last to this
location. The presence of this file acts as a signal that the
definition set has been completely loaded, and may cause errors
if it is not the last file copied to the directory. One easy
way to insure this is to rename ZDONE.DAT to Z.DAT, copy all the
files to the definition directory, and then rename Z.DAT back to
ZDONE.DAT in the definition directory. This is a zero-byte file,
and if your version of the copy command doesn't copy this file,
the xcopy command will.
4. Refer to the Intelligent Updater File List below for information
on which files to copy into the Norton AntiVirus folder.
