  4. The following document details the virus definition update procedures
  5. for:
  6.  
  7. * Norton AntiVirus 1.0 and 2.0 for Windows 95
  8. * Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows 95
  9. * Norton AntiVirus 3.0 and 4.0 for DOS / Windows 3.1
  10. * Norton AntiVirus Network Manager

  18. TIP: Be aware that there are now four different versions of
  19. Intelligent Updater with different filenames!  Read the section below
  20. for more details.  If you are receiving this update on a multi-disk
  21. version of Intelligent Updater, the program files for Intelligent
  22. Updater 1.7 are located on disk one, and on disk three for
  23. Intelligent Updater 4.0.  All other update files are located on disk
  24. two.

  28. Intelligent Updater
  29. =====================================================================
  30.  
  31. As part of our continuing commitment to fight the spread of computer
  32. viruses, Symantec has developed a new program called Intelligent
  33. Updater to simplify virus definition file updates.  Intelligent
  34. Updater locates Norton AntiVirus on your computer and installs new
  35. virus definition files automatically.  All you have to do is run the
  36. program, then scan your disk with Norton AntiVirus. Later sections of
  37. this document give step-by-step instructions for each Norton
  38. AntiVirus version.
  39.  
  40. There are now four versions of Intelligent Updater.  The newest
  41. package is a version of Intelligent Updater 4.0, used to deliver
  42. virus definitions for NAV 4.0 running under NetWare.  The program
  43. name, which changes from month to month, uses the following form:
  44.  
  45. mmNAyyN.EXE, where mm is the month, and yy is the year.
  46.  
  47. Another version of Intelligent Updater 4.0 is used to deliver virus
  48. definitions for NAV 4.0 running under Windows 95 and NT.  This is
  49. named with the form:
  50.  
  51. mmNAyyI.EXE, where mm is the month, and yy is the year.
  52.  
  53. Intelligent Updater 1.7 is for all other versions of NAV.  It is
  54. named with the form:
  55.  
  56. mmNAVyy.EXE, where mm is the month, and yy is the year.
  57.  
  58. Intelligent Updater is also released on a set of three floppies.  The
  59. program file for Intelligent Updater 1.7 is located on your virus
  60. definitions update disk one.  The program name, which also changes
  61. from month to month, uses the following form:
  62.  
  63. mmDSKyy.EXE, where mm is the month, and yy is the year.
  64.  
  65. Disk two contains the remaining files for Intelligent Updater 1.7
  66. that could not fit on disk one.  Disk three contains Intelligent
  67. Updater 4.0, with the same name as the downloaded version, currently
  68. named 04NA98Ia.EXE.
  69.  
  70. For example, 04NA98Na.EXE is the name of the latest Intelligent
  71. Updater 4.0 definitions update for NAV running under NetWare.
  72. 04NA98Ia.EXE is the name of the latest Intelligent Updater 4.0
  73. definitions update for NAV 4.0 for Windows 95, NT Workstation, and NT
  74. Server.  04FD98a.EXE is the Intelligent Updater 1.7 definitions
  75. update that is distributed on floppies for all other versions of NAV.
  76. 04NAV98a.EXE is Intelligent Updater 1.7 for download distribution,
  77. which is too large to fit on one floppy.  04FD98a.EXE is also
  78. available for download, to allow flexibility in updating many
  79. computers at one site.

  83. Norton AntiVirus 1.0 and 2.0 for Windows 95
  84. =====================================================================

  86. This product requires the use of Intelligent Updater 1.7, named
  87. 04NAV98a.EXE or 04FD98a.EXE.
  88.  
  89. Important Notice: If your HELP/ABOUT NORTON ANTIVIRUS menu option
  90. does not say Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 version 2.0.1, you
  91. should update it using the NAV 2.01 patch.  This latest version of
  92. the Norton AntiVirus adds password protection to the Options dialog
  93. box and adds network alerting from AutoProtect and the virus scanner.
  94. As viruses continue to be discovered with alarming regularity, the
  95. NAV virus definition files have grown in size to counter the latest
  96. threats.  Applying this patch will ensure that your installation will
  97. continue to accept of versions the latest (and largest) virus
  98. definition files.  Using older versions of Norton AntiVirus for
  99. Windows 95 can cause false detections when the new virus definitions
  100. are installed.  This latest patch also adds support for Microsoft
  101. Service Pack 2 (FAT 32/large volumes) and will be required to apply
  102. all current definition sets.
  103.  
  104. Please download this file to a temporary directory and execute it to
  105. extract the necessary files.  Then click Setup to begin the
  106. installation process.  After applying this patch, you must also
  107. update your virus definition set.
  108.  
  109. This patch is available for download from the Symantec BBS, the
  110. Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, or America Online.  You can
  111. also call Customer Service at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.
  112.  
  113. To update Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 virus definition files:
  114. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

  116. 1. Go to (select) the folder or drive where you have the Intelligent
  117.    Updater program (04NAV98a.EXE or 04FD98a.EXE).
  118.    For example, your A: drive.
  119. 2. Double-click (launch) the file 04NAV98a.EXE or 04FD98a.EXE.
  120. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.
  121. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive.  Before you reboot
  122.    your computer, you must run a scan for viruses.  Scanning your
  123.    drive activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical
  124.    files.
  125. 5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
  126.    definitions.

  130. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows 95

  133. This product requires the use of Intelligent Updater 4.0, named
  134. 04NA98Ia.EXE.  Other versions of the Intelligent Updater will not work
  135. with NAV 4.0 for Windows 95.

  137. To update Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 virus definition files:

  140. 1. Go to (select) the folder or drive where you have the Intelligent
  141.    Updater program, 04NA98Ia.EXE.
  142.    For example, your A: drive.
  143. 2. Double-click (launch) the file 04NA98Ia.EXE.
  144. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.
  145. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive.  Before you reboot
  146.    your computer, you must run a scan for viruses.  Scanning your
  147.    drive activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical
  148.    files.

  152. Norton AntiVirus 3.0 and 4.0 for DOS / Windows 3.1
  153. =====================================================================

  155. This product requires the use of Intelligent Updater 1.7, named
  156. 04NAV98a.EXE or 04FD98a.EXE.
  157.  
  158. Important Notice: If your version is dated before June 1, 1996
  159. (NAV.EXE, NAVW.EXE), you should update it using this Engine Update
  160. (UPDATEME.EXE).  As viruses continue to be discovered with alarming
  161. regularity, the NAV virus definition files have grown in size to
  162. counter the latest threats.  Applying this patch will ensure that
  163. your installation will continue to accept the latest (and largest)
  164. virus definition files.  Using older versions of Norton AntiVirus can
  165. cause false detections when the new virus definitions are installed.
  166. This patch is required to apply virus definition sets dated August
  167. 1997 or later.
  168.  
  169. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus Network Manager program, download
  170. the file named UPDATEME.EXE.  Place the file in an empty directory
  171. and execute UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents.  Step-by-step
  172. instructions are included in the READ.ME file.
  173.  
  174. The NAV 3.11 patch contains the April 1997 virus definition set.  You
  175. must apply the latest virus definition set update (for example,
  176. 04NAV98a.EXE) after completing the program update.
  177.  
  178. UPDATEME.EXE is located where the monthly virus definition files
  179. updates are normally found.  It is available for download from the
  180. Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, or America
  181. Online.  You can also call Customer Service at (800) 441-7234 to
  182. order a disk set.
  183.  
  184. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 or 4.0 virus definition files, use one
  185. of the following procedures.  Users with the Windows 3.1 version of
  186. NAV can use either procedure to update both the DOS and Windows
  187. components of their definitions.
  188.  
  189. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0/4.0 virus definition files from
  190. Windows:
  191. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  192.  
  193. 1. Go to (select) the directory or drive where you have the
  194.    Intelligent Updater program (04NAV98a.EXE or 04FD98a.EXE).
  195.    For example, your A: drive.
  196. 2. Double-click on the file 04NAV98a.EXE or 04FD98a.EXE.
  197. 3. Follow the on screen instructions.
  198. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive.  Before you reboot
  199.    your computer, you must run a scan for viruses.  Scanning your
  200.    drive activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical
  201.    files.
  202. 5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
  203.    definitions as well.
  204.  
  205. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0/4.0 virus definition files from DOS:
  206. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  207.  
  208. 1. Exit Windows entirely.
  209.    For example, from within Windows, select EXIT from the File menu.
  210. 2. Change to the directory or drive where you have the Intelligent
  211.    Updater program (04NAV98a.EXE or 04FD98a.EXE).
  212.    For example, type A: at the C:\ prompt.
  213. 3. From the DOS prompt, type 04NAV98a.EXE (or 04FD98a.EXE) and press
  214.    Enter.
  215. 4. Follow the instructions on screen.
  216. 5. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive.  Before you reboot
  217.    your computer, you must run a scan for viruses.  Scanning your
  218.    drive activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical
  219.    files.
  220. 6. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
  221.    definitions as well.

  225. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  226. =====================================================================
  227.  
  228. This product requires the use of Intelligent Updater 1.7, named
  229. 04NAV98a.EXE or 04FD98a.EXE.
  230.  
  231. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  232. (NAVNET.EXE) is dated before June 1, 1996, you must upgrade your
  233. software before updating the virus definition files.  Using an older
  234. version of the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager with the new virus
  235. definitions may generate false alarms.
  236.  
  237. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus Network Manager program (quick
  238. instructions):
  239. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  240.  
  241. Detailed, step-by-step instructions are included in the READ.ME file.
  242.  
  243. The NAV 3.11 patch contains the April 1997 virus definition set.  You
  244. must apply the latest virus definition set update (for example,
  245. 04FD98a.EXE) after completing the program update.
  246.  
  247. 1. Download the file named UPDATEME.EXE to an empty directory.
  248.    UPDATEME.EXE is located where the monthly virus definition files
  249.    updates are normally found.  It is available for download from the
  250.    Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, or
  251.    America Online.  You can also call Customer Service at
  252.    (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.
  253. 2. Copy NAVNET.EXE and NAVNETW.EXE to your local NAV directory.
  254.    NAVNET.EXE or NAVNETW.EXE must be in the NAV directory or path or
  255.    only the standalone files will be extracted.
  256. 3. Execute UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents.
  257.  
  258. After updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, you must do the
  259. following:
  260.  
  261. 1. Recreate your .NNS files using the new _DEFAULT.NNS as a template.
  262.    For information on how to recreate .NNS files, order FaxBack #4290
  263.    from our free FaxBack service at (541) 984-2490, option 2.
  264. 2. Update your virus definition set (detailed instructions below).
  265.  
  266. The NAV 3.11 patch contains the April 1997 virus definition set.  You
  267. must apply the latest virus definition set update (for example,
  268. 04NAV98a.EXE) after completing the program update.
  269.  
  270. To update Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definition files:
  271. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  272.  
  273. 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory
  274.    where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program (04NAV98a.EXE
  275.    or 04FD98a.EXE).
  276. 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton
  277.    AntiVirus Network Manager is installed.
  278. 3. You must have READ and WRITE access to the mapped drive.
  279. 4. From a DOS prompt, type 04NAV98a.EXE (or 04FD98a.EXE) [path] and
  280.    press Enter.
  281.    [path] is the location mapped in step 2.
  282. 5. Follow the instructions on screen.
  283. 6. Start Norton AntiVirus from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  284.    directory and scan a drive to activate the new virus definitions.
  285.    You must run a scan for viruses.  Scanning a drive activates the
  286.    new virus definitions and rebuilds critical files.
  287.  
  288.  
  289. =====================================================================
  290. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT and NT Tools
  291. =====================================================================
  292.  
  293.  
  294. This product requires the use of Intelligent Updater 1.7, named
  295. 04NAV98a.EXE or 04FD98a.EXE.
  296.  
  297. Users of Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT and Norton NT Tools do
  298. not require anti-virus engine updates at this time.
  299.  
  300. To update Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT virus definition files:
  301. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  302.  
  303. 1. Go to (select) the folder or drive where you have the Intelligent
  304.    Updater program (04NAV98a.EXE or 04FD98a.EXE).
  305.    For example, your A: drive.
  306. 2. Double-click (launch) the file 04NAV98a.EXE or 04FD98a.EXE.
  307. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.
  308. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive.  You must run a scan
  309.    for viruses.  Scanning your drive activates the new virus
  310.    definitions and rebuilds critical files.

  313. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows NT

  316. This product requires the use of Intelligent Updater 4.0, named
  317. 04NA98Ia.EXE.  Other versions of the Intelligent Updater will not work
  318. with NAV 4.0 for Windows NT.
  319.  
  320. To update Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows NT virus definition files:

  323. 1. Go to (select) the folder or drive where you have the Intelligent
  324.    Updater program, named 04NA98Ia.EXE.
  325.    For example, your A: drive.
  326. 2. Double-click (launch) the file 04NA98Ia.EXE.
  327. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.
  328. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive.  You must run a scan
  329.    for viruses.  Scanning your drive activates the new virus
  330.    definitions and rebuilds critical files.

  334. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for NetWare
  335. =====================================================================

  337. This product requires the use of Intelligent Updater 1.7, named
  338. 04NAV98a.EXE.
  339.  
  340. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus
  341. for NetWare, version 2.0 is dated earlier than December 13, 1995, you
  342. must upgrade your software before updating the virus definition
  343. files.  The new version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare detects and
  344. removes a new class of viruses called macro viruses.  These viruses
  345. infect Microsoft Word document and template files, and Microsoft
  346. Excel files.  For information on how to receive the upgrade, call
  347. Customer Service at (800) 441-7234.
  348.  
  349. To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare virus definition files:
  350. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  351.  
  352. 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory
  353.    where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program
  354.    (04NAV98a.EXE).
  355. 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton

  378. This product requires the use of Intelligent Updater 4.0, named

  381. To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare virus definition files:
  382. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  383.  
  384. 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory
  385.    where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program
  386.    (04NA98Na.EXE).
  387. 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton
  388.    AntiVirus for NetWare is installed.

  390. 4. Disable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM.

  408. Installing Virus Definition Files Manually
  409. =====================================================================
  410.  
  411. If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus
  412. definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to
  413. extract the virus definition files, then copy the appropriate files
  414. to the Norton AntiVirus folder.
  415.  
  416. To install virus definition files manually:
  417. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  418.  
  419. 1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (04NAV98a.EXE, 04FD98a.EXE,
  420.    04NA98Ia.EXE, or 04NA98Na.EXE) to an empty, temporary folder.
  421. 2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command:
  422.  
  423.    04NAV98a.EXE /DUMP
  424.          or
  425.    04FD98a.EXE /DUMP
  426.          or
  427.    04NA98Ia.EXE /DUMP
  428.          or
  429.    04NA98Na.EXE /DUMP
  430.  
  431.    Virus definition files for all supported platforms are extracted
  432.    into the temporary folder.
  433. 3. Copy the appropriate files to the Norton AntiVirus folder.  If
  434.    you are using Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows 95 / Windows NT
  435.    Server & Workstation, copy the files to this location:
  436.    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming\
  437.    In addition, the file ZDONE.DAT needs to be copied last to this
  438.    location.  The presence of this file acts as a signal that the
  439.    definition set has been completely loaded, and may cause errors
  440.    if it is not the last file copied to the directory.  One easy
  441.    way to insure this is to rename ZDONE.DAT to Z.DAT, copy all the
  442.    files to the definition directory, and then rename Z.DAT back to
  443.    ZDONE.DAT in the definition directory.  This is a zero-byte file,
  444.    and if your version of the copy command doesn't copy this file,
  445.    the xcopy command will.
  446. 4. Refer to the Intelligent Updater File List below for information
  447.    on which files to copy into the Norton AntiVirus folder.
