INTERNET CHESS HELP FILE
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Internet Chess! If you've played chess and you can use a computer,
then you should have no problem playing Internet Chess. You can now play chess with
anyone that has an Internet Link! You can also play a 2 player game on a single computer.
There is no Computer opponent, as this game was designed specifically for Internet play.
The Shareware version of Internet Chess is limited to 15 minutes of gameplay. After
15 minutes, no moves will be allowed. To Register, go to our website:
http://www.iceinternet.com/wilsonk/chess.htm
or
read the reghelp.txt file installed with this program for other options.
REQUIREMENTS
- 486/66 with 8mb+ Ram
- Windows 95
- Modem (for Internet Play)
- Internet Service Provider (for Internet Play)
- Chat software like Kali95 (to find other players)
- Optional: Sound Card
GAMEPLAY
Test the game first by playing a 2 player game w/o Network. You can select
this from the File menu. The game always starts with Player 1, which is the
RED pieces. To move a piece, click on the desired piece. It will become highlighted
in green. Click on the new piece location. If the move is valid, the piece will
move to that location. To lock in your move, click on the MOVE button. To cancel
your move, click the CANCEL button. You can also lock in your move by double
clicking on the game board. The right mouse button cancels a move. A game can
be restarted by selecting Restart in the File menu.
One of the great features of Internet Chess, is the ability to Save and Load
a game so it can be played later. You can also create scenerios in the Scenerio
Designer which is installed in the Internet Chess directory. This is useful for
trying some of the classic chess moves, or for continuing a game that was played
over Email or some other method.
INTERNET PLAY: First, log onto the internet. Now, you must find an opponent.
You can arrange to play a friend by calling them first, or you can use a program
like Kali95 to chat with people and ask them to play a friendly game of chess. Kali95
is a program that allows gamers to chat with each other and launch Network games
over the internet. There are other services which allow you to do this, but Kali95
is quite popular. The shareware version of Kali95 is available at:

Once you have found someone to play against, you need to decide who will be the
Server and who will be the Client. This really doesn't mean much, except which
button you click! The Client needs the Server's IP address. The IP address lets
the Client know which computer to connect to. The Server should just click on
the button: WAIT FOR PLAYER. The Client should enter the IP address into the
CONNECT TO window. Now the Client clicks CONNECT TO PLAYER. If everything was
done correctly, you should see a connect message in the CHAT window!
The game will start immediatly after you connect. You can communicate with
the other player through the CHAT window. Simply type messages in the INPUT
WINDOW, just above the CHAT window. Pressing <RETURN> will send your message.
To Disconnect from the Server or Client, click the DISCONNECT button. This
button will only be visible if you are actually connected to someone.
Game Play is the same as playing w/o a Network.
NETWORK PLAY: Same as Internet play. Your network must support TCP/IP protocol.

CHESS RULES
All rules are implemented in Internet Chess. The only caveatte is
en Passant moves. A pawn is only allowed to move 1 square when another
pawn is in the position to take it from its starting position. This
is slightly different from the en Passant Rule. Also, Checkmate and
Stalemate are not checked for by the program. It is your responsibility
to figure out when you are in Checkmate or Stalemate. This is just
like a real game of chess, where there is no computer to help you.
The computer will tell you when you are in check, so you don't make
an invalid move. If you need more help with the rules of chess,
look on the internet or check your local library.
