SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
===================
To run Internet Explorer 4.0, your system must meet the
following minimum requirements:
- A 486 with a 66 Mhz processor
- For Windows 95: 8 MB of RAM
For Windows NT: 16 MB of RAM
- 50 MB of available hard-disk space
SETUP
=====
- WARNING: Do not install any previous version of Internet
Explorer over Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows 95 (or later
versions of Windows). You might not be able to restart your
computer. If you need to install an earlier version of Internet
Explorer, you must uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 first.
- You should always uninstall your current version of Internet
Explorer 4.0 before installing a newer build.
- Make sure you are connected to the Internet before you run Setup.
- You must be running either Windows 95 or Windows NT version 4.0
before you install Internet Explorer 4.0.
- If your Windows installation is on drive C and you want to do a
full install of Internet Explorer on drive D, you must have
50 MB of free disk space on the Windows drive. In addition, you
need approximately 21 MB of free disk space on the installation
drive (in this example, drive D). This is true only if you are
installing Internet Explorer immediately, not downloading it for
later installation.
Installing Internet Explorer 4.0
--------------------------------
Whether you choose to install over the network or to download
the installation files to your hard disk, the Setup files are
copied to your hard disk. For this Preview Release, this function
is by design, so you can reinstall more quickly if you need to.
If you want to reclaim the disk space, you can delete the
Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup folder from your hard disk.
Note that you cannot set up Internet Explorer 4.0 to run on a
network drive. In the future, the download-only option will support
downloading to a network drive, but not running from a network drive.
Installing Over Internet Explorer 2.0
-------------------------------------
If you upgrade to Internet Explorer 4.0 directly from Internet
Explorer 2.0, you might see the following error message when you
try to install an add-on component: "Sitelist is not an object."
To work around this problem, you need to re-register some data
controls by carrying out the following steps:
1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
2. For each of the following commands, type the command in the
text box, and then press ENTER:
regsvr32 tdc.ocx
regsvr32 msadco.dll
regsvr32 msr2c.dll
regsvr32 msador15.dll
regsvr32 msader10.dll
3. Connect to the Web page again and download the add-on components
you want.
Installing on a Dual-Boot Computer
----------------------------------
If you are installing multiple instances of Internet Explorer, you
should install them to different drives or partitions.
Running on Windows NT
---------------------
NOTE: You must have administrative privileges to install and
uninstall this program on Windows NT. This includes having
administrative privileges the first time you start your
computer after installing or uninstalling.
You must restart your computer after installing Internet Explorer 4.0.
This is also true for some add-on components.
Uninstalling Internet Explorer 4.0
----------------------------------
You can uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 by carrying out the following
steps:
1. In Control Panel, click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
2. Double-click each Internet Explorer add-on program to uninstall
it.
2. Double-click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 to uninstall it.
If you have installed multiple versions of Internet Explorer 4.0 on
top of each other, uninstall is not supported.
Uninstall Does Not Return Your Computer to Its Previous State
-------------------------------------------------------------
Note that the following problems might occur when you uninstall
Internet Explorer 4.0:
- Registry entries will be left on your computer.
- It does not uninstall all components. You can uninstall individual
components by using the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel.
- Some user settings are lost.
- Some files and shortcuts are left behind.
Uninstalling Personal Web Server
--------------------------------
If you need to uninstall Personal Web Server, carry out the following
procedure.
1. In Control Panel, click the Network icon.
2. In the list of installed network components, click Personal Web
Server.
3. Click Remove, and then click OK.
Reinstalling Internet Explorer 4.0
----------------------------------
If you reinstall Internet Explorer over itself, you cannot change
browser modes during Setup. To change browser modes, click the
Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel, and then add Shell
Integration Mode.
Reinstalling Internet Explorer 3.0
----------------------------------
If for any reason you need to return to using version 3.0 of
Internet Explorer, carry out the following steps to make sure
that the Internet Connection Wizard will work properly:
1. Uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0.
2. Use the Find command on the Start menu to find and delete the
following files:
Inetcfg.dll
Icwdial.dll
Isign.dll
Icwphbk.dll
3. Uninstall and then reinstall Internet Explorer 3.0.
Installing NetShow from the Add-on Page
---------------------------------------
If you try to install Microsoft NetShow as a single component from
the add-on page, you will get an error message stating that you
haven't selected anything to install. This will be fixed in a
future release.
If you try to install NetShow with other components, an error dialog
box will open behind the browser window and it will appear that your
computer has stopped responding. To work around this problem, minimize
the browser window or click the "Version conflict" item on the taskbar.
"Confirm File Replace" Dialog Box Is Missing Information
--------------------------------------------------------
You may see a "Confirm File Replace" dialog where the
specific file that needs to be replaced is not identified.
KNOWN ISSUES
============
Back Button May Not Work Properly
---------------------------------
If you click the Back button and the page does not work as expected,
try clicking the Refresh button. The page should now work properly.
This is a problem only with pages that use a script, and it will be
fixed in future releases.
Downloading a Second Time If Download Was Interrupted
-----------------------------------------------------
If you are downloading a file and you quit Internet Explorer before
the file has finished downloading, you will get an error message.
Before you download the file a second time, you must remove the
originally downloaded file from your cache. To do this, you can
do one of the following:
- If you know the name of the file you downloaded, open the
\Windows\Temporary Internet Files folder and delete the file.
- If you do not know the name of the file you downloaded, you can
remove all the files from your cache, as follows:
1. In Internet Explorer, click the View menu, and then click
Options.
2. Click the Advanced tab, and then in the Temporary Internet
Files area, click Settings.
3. Click the Empty Folder button.
Icons Might Not Be Visible
--------------------------
If you disable the Enable ActiveX Controls And Plug-ins check box
on the Security tab in the Options dialog box, then open Control
Panel or My Computer, you will not be able to see any icons. To
work around this problem, turn off Web view by right-clicking the
desktop, clicking Properties, and then clicking Web View.
Microsoft Fax Causes Error When Mail Programs Are Closed
--------------------------------------------------------
When Microsoft Fax is installed, closing Outlook or Exchange
causes an invalid page fault.
PICS Support Is Not Yet Fully Functional
----------------------------------------
There are three known cases where PICS is not enforced:
- Background sound may be played before the PICS password is
entered.
- The PICS rating is not checked if the document is loaded from
a file using the file:// protocol.
- If you have security ratings enabled, then subscribe to a rated
site from your Favorites list, the Active Screen Saver will display
the rated site (and all other subscribed sites). This will be fixed
in future releases.
Running the Internet Explorer 3.0 Script Debugger
-------------------------------------------------
If you have the Internet Explorer 3.0 script debugger installed,
do not upgrade to the Internet Explorer 4.0 Preview Release. The
script debugger does not work under Internet Explorer 4.0.
Dial-up Connection May Not Work on First Try
--------------------------------------------
After you install the Internet Explorer 4.0 Preview Release, if
the dial-up connection appears to continue dialing indefinitely,
restart your computer and then try the connection again.
Running NT 4.0 with Multiple Profiles
-------------------------------------
In this release, Internet Explorer 4.0 does not work properly on
computers running NT 4.0 with multiple profiles.
System Might Hang When Active Content Settings Are Disabled
-----------------------------------------------------------
If you want to disable the Enable ActiveX Controls And Plug-ins check
box on the Security tab in the Options dialog box, you must first
remove any ActiveX Controls, Java applets, or script pages from the
desktop. If you don't, your system will hang when the desktop refreshes.
Some ActiveX Controls Don't Work
--------------------------------
Some ActiveX Controls might not work in the current build of
Internet Explorer 4.0. There is no known workaround for this
problem.
Some Controls Don't Print Properly
----------------------------------
Some controls, such as the MS Investor Ticker, do not print
at all.
Lock Icon Stays on Taskbar When Web Site is Unsecure
----------------------------------------------------
If you are on a secure Web site, then click a link to an
unsecure page on that site, a dialog box appears asking if
you are aware that the site will now contain mixed content.
If you answer Yes, the Lock icon stays on your taskbar, even
though the entire Web site is no longer secure. This will be
fixed in a future release.
Adding Content to the HTML Desktop on Windows NT 4.0
----------------------------------------------------
If you are running this Preview Release on Windows NT 4.0 and
you connect to the Internet by using a modem, you might encounter
application errors when you add content to the HTML desktop. To
avoid this problem, add your desktop objects, and then click the
Apply button before you click OK.
Quit NetMeeting to Switch to Shell Integration Mode
---------------------------------------------------
When you switch from browser-only to Shell Integration Mode, you
must quit NetMeeting (if it is running) when you are prompted to
close all running programs. Otherwise, the active desktop may not
work properly.
"Send To" Command Does Not Work
-------------------------------
This command does not work properly in Internet Explorer. However,
it does work properly in Windows Explorer.
Do Not Use ALT+ENTER to Display Properties
------------------------------------------
This keyboard shortcut does not work in this Preview Release.
Active Screen Saver Does Not Work with Windows NT
-------------------------------------------------
If you are running Internet Explorer 4.0 under Windows NT
and you click a link in the Active Screen Saver, the screen
saver closes but the browser does not open.
Some Printing May Cause System to Hang
--------------------------------------
Printing framesets, embedded Office documents, or links to CGI
scripts may cause Internet Explorer to stop responding.
Printing Using a PCL Driver May Not Work Properly
-------------------------------------------------
If you are using a PCL driver, and you try to print a document
that has a non-white background (for example, black), all non-white
text and images are not printed. To work around this problem, turn
off the Print Background Colors And Images option before you print.
Server Redirection to HTTPS Secured Site Causes Error
-----------------------------------------------------
Some sites use a secured HTTPS connection for certain pages,
such as brokerage account-transaction pages. To gain access
to these secured sites, the user clicks a Log-on button on a
non-secured page, which links to an HTTP: address that appears
to be an executable. This executable in turn redirects to a
secured HTTPS: address.
When Internet Explorer 4.0 attempts to open the HTTP: address
of the executable, the following error message appears:
Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site
http://www.xxxx.xxx. The requested item could not be located.
Viewing Links from Within MSN
-----------------------------
If you are trying to view Web links from within The Microsoft
Network, you must change the Options setting on the View menu
to Browse Folders Using A Separate Window For Each Folder. This
will be corrected in a future version.
Cannot Play QuickTime and MPEG Movies on Windows NT
---------------------------------------------------
With this release, you will not be able to play back QuickTime
and MPEG movies directly from the Internet on Windows NT 4.0, but
local playback of movie files from your hard disk should function
correctly. Playback from the Internet should work correctly on
Windows 95.
Time Zones Display Differently
------------------------------
When you use programs that use the java.util.Date class, note
that time zones are displayed differently when using Sun's JDK
and Java(TM) Support for Internet Explorer 3.0 or 4.0.
For the same entry, the displays would appear as follows:
Sun JDK:
Wed Dec 20 08:57:00 PST 1995
Java Support for Internet Explorer 3.0/4.0:
Wed Dec 20 08:57:00 Pacific Standard Time 1995
This issue will be addressed in a future release.
The Java Virtual Machine is based in part on the work of the
Independent JPEG Group.
Java is a trademark of Sun Microsystems.
Screen Might Flicker in Web View with 256 Colors
------------------------------------------------
Your screen might flicker if you are in Web view and your
monitor is set to display 256 colors. To work around
this problem, change the color setting, or click the View
menu and turn off Web view. This is a problem on only some
systems.
Problem With VB 5.0 ActiveX Controls
------------------------------------
With this release, if you are running Active Desktop and
you close a page containing a VB 5.0 ActiveX Control,
there will be a fault in Explorer, and the Active Desktop
will restart the next time you click an item on the
taskbar.
Cannot Open Desktop Folder from Run Command
-------------------------------------------
You can open the C:\Windows\Desktop folder only from Windows
Explorer or My Computer. If you try to open the Desktop
folder by using the Run command, it may not open until
it has been opened by using Windows Explorer or My Computer.
Installed Backgrounds Become Part of Active Desktop
---------------------------------------------------
If you install a program that changes your desktop background,
such as Microsoft Plus!, and then try to revert to the default
Active Desktop settings, the installed background remains on
the desktop.
Switching Between Integrated Shell and Browser-Only Modes
---------------------------------------------------------
At the end of Setup when you click OK after switching between
Integrated Shell Mode and Browser-Only Mode, you might see the
following error message: "Explorer caused a divide error in module
shell32.dll." You can close the error message, and then press
CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart your computer. Internet Explorer will
work properly.
ActiveX Controls Do Not Work on DEC Alpha Computers
---------------------------------------------------
If you are using a DEC Alpha computer, note that ActiveX Controls
for Windows 95 and Windows NT do not work on this system.
Running Internet Explorer 4.0 on IBM Aptiva Computers
-----------------------------------------------------
If you use an IBM Aptiva computer, and you turn on desktop
Web view after downloading Internet Explorer 4.0, the desktop
animation effects program that is shipped with IBM Aptiva
computers no longer works. When you hover over an animated
icon, the icon disappears from the desktop.
Closing Security Dialog Box Can Cause Invalid Page Fault Error
--------------------------------------------------------------
If you try to open an unknown file type in Internet Explorer,
you will see the following message: "Internet Explorer is opening
file of unknown type: <filename> from <drive>. What would you like
to do with this file?..." If you close the browser window and then
cancel the security message, you will get an invalid page fault error.
This will be fixed in a future release.
Active Desktop Is Turned Off If Desktop Files Are Moved
-------------------------------------------------------
If you move, rename, or delete a file in use as an HTML background or
desktop object, the Active Desktop is automatically turned off. This
is because the Active Desktop is looking for a file that it cannot
find. To turn the Active Desktop back on, carry out the following
steps:
1. Right-click the desktop, and then click Active Desktop to remove
the check mark.
2. Press F5 to refresh the desktop.
3. To restart the Active Desktop, right-click the desktop, click
Properties, click the Desktop tab, and then select one or both
of the Active Desktop settings.
4. Before you click OK, make sure you edit the path to the desktop
object or HTML background file that was moved, renamed, or deleted
so that the path points to the current location of the file;
otherwise, the Active Desktop will be turned off again.
APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
=========================
Adobe Acrobat: Using Internet Explorer 4.0 with
Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0
-----------------------------------------------
Using the Adobe Acrobat .pdf viewer in Internet Explorer 4.0
may not work. The control or plug-in will be created, but
the content will not download.
Also, if security ratings are turned on in Internet
Explorer 4.0, you cannot view .pdf files in the browser.
CleanSweep: Do Not Install CleanSweep 3.0 with
Internet Explorer 4.0
-----------------------------------------------
Installing CleanSweep 3.0 after you install the Internet
Explorer 4.0 Preview Release is not recommended. CleanSweep
replaces some vital system files and causes Internet Explorer
not to work properly.
If you must install CleanSweep, carry out the following steps:
1. Find and make back-up copies of the following files:
- Urlmon.dll
- Wininet.dll
2. Install CleanSweep, and then restart your computer.
3. Start Internet Explorer 4.0.
4. If Internet Explorer 4.0 is not working properly, restart
your computer in MS-DOS mode.
5. Replace the existing Urlmon.dll and Wininet.dll files with
the back-up copies you made in step 1.
6. Type WIN at the command prompt to restart Windows, then
start Internet Explorer.
Or, if you have already installed CleanSweep, you can try
uninstalling and then reinstalling Internet Explorer 4.0.
Corel: Running Corel Office 7 Version 7.1.9
-------------------------------------------
You cannot save a file to a UNC path from WordPerfect,
QuatroPro, or Presentations. This issue does not exist in
Corel Office 7 version 7.0.0.
CyberMedia: CyberMedia Oil Change Displays Incorrect Version
------------------------------------------------------------
This program incorrectly identifies Internet Explorer 4.0 as
Internet Explorer version 3.0.
Freeloader: Running Freeloader
------------------------------
Freeloader 2.5 does not work with the Internet Explorer 4.0
Preview Release. Freeloader 2.0 displays an error message when
you start the program, then it loads Internet Explorer and runs
properly.
HotDog: Cannot Run HotDog Professional 3.0.19
---------------------------------------------
You cannot use Internet Explorer 4.0 as the internal viewer
for HotDog Professional v3.0.19. You will get an OLE
automation error when you try to preview documents.
IntelliMouse: Microsoft IntelliMouse Wheel Not Supported
--------------------------------------------------------
For this Preview Release, support for the IntelliMouse wheel
is not available.
Intuit: Using Intuit Products with Internet Explorer 4.0
--------------------------------------------------------
You will not be able to configure Internet Explorer 4.0 to run
with Intuit products, such as Quicken Financial Suite, Quicken,
TurboTax 96, and Quickbooks. When you run any of these programs,
you will need to use the Netscape browser that is installed with
the product.
Java: Working with Java Applets
--------------------------------
- When you print a Web page that contains a Java applet, the
contents of the applet will not print.
- Java Wireframe does not install properly with the Internet
Explorer 4.0 Preview Release.
- Java applets sometimes write over the scroll bar and screen
area.
Lotus: Cannot Uninstall Lotus Notes 4.0
---------------------------------------
If you install Lotus Notes 4.0, you will get the following
error message: "Unable to create uninstall icon in program
group." You will not be able to uninstall Lotus Notes 4.0.
Microsoft Plus! Active Desktop Does Not
Use MS Plus! Theme Wallpaper
---------------------------------------
If you are running Microsoft Plus! and you choose a desktop
theme, the Internet Explorer Active Desktop does not use
the theme's wallpaper. It uses the colors supplied by Plus!
for the windows, but the wallpaper remains the default
background for Windows 95. In Display properties, the
wallpaper setting indicates that Plus! is being used.
MSN: Dialing Does Not Work Properly in MSN
------------------------------------------
If you install the Internet Explorer 4.0 Preview Release
on a system already running The Microsoft Network, dialing
will not work properly. To work around this problem,
uninstall and then reinstall The Microsoft Network after
you install the Internet Explorer 4.0 Preview Release.
MSN: MSN Displays Inappropriate Sign-Out Dialog Box
---------------------------------------------------
If you are running Internet Explorer 4.0 in multiple browser
windows and you close one of the windows, MSN displays a
dialog box asking if you want to sign out, even though you
still have other browser windows active. To keep your MSN
session running, just answer that you do not want to sign
out.
NetAttache Pro: "Add Browser Page" Command Does Not
Work Properly in NetAttache Pro Newsgroups
---------------------------------------------------
If you click Add Browser Page while any folder is open,
Internet Explorer adds that folder, rather than just the
Web address, to one of the NetAttache Pro newsgroups.
Netscape: Netscape Navigator Plug-ins Might Not Work
----------------------------------------------------
Some Netscape Navigator plug-ins might not install correctly
if Netscape is not present. Internet Explorer 4.0 supports
Netscape Navigator plug-ins, but some plug-ins rely on finding
the Netscape executable file (Netscape.exe) or locating Netscape-
specific entries in the registry. The following are examples of
plug-ins that might not install correctly:
- Astound Web Player (http://www.golddisk.com/awp/index.html)
- Corel CMX Viewer (http://www.corel.com/corelcmx/)
- SoftSource DWG/DXF (http://www.softsource.com)
- Autodesk Whip
(http://www.autodesk.com/products/autocad/whip/readme.htm)
Microsoft is working with the vendors to correct this issue.
In the meantime, you can work around this issue in several
ways:
1. Contact the plug-in vendor to see if an ActiveX control
version is available for the plug-in. If Internet Explorer
encounters an <EMBED> tag for which no Netscape plug-in is
present, it searches for and uses an appropriate ActiveX
control if one is installed.
2. Some companies offer their plug-ins as stand-alone .dll
files (instead of as auto-installation .exe files). You
can download and copy these .dll files directly to the
Internet Explorer plug-ins folder--usually at the following
location:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Internet\Plugins
3. Keep Netscape Navigator installed on your computer until
you have downloaded and installed all the plug-ins you want
to use.
Netscape: Running Netscape Communicator 4.0 PR2
-----------------------------------------------
If you are running Netscape Communicator 4.0 PR2 (Professional
Edition), you connect to the Internet through a proxy server,
and your system does not have an earlier version of Internet
Explorer or Netscape, Active Setup will not be able to download
information about available installation sites. To work around
this problem, download Internet Explorer 4.0 as a single self-
extracting file, and then run Active Setup locally.
Norton: Scrollbars Overlap in Norton System Genie
-------------------------------------------------
After you install Internet Explorer 4.0, Norton System Genie
acquires additional scrollbars which, depending on window
position and size, will overlap.
Norton: Running Norton Utilities 2.0
------------------------------------
Norton Utilities version 2.0 is not compatible with the
Internet Explorer 4.0 Recycle Bin because of new features
that have been added to Internet Explorer.
PowerDesk95: Cannot Successfully Uninstall PowerDesk95
------------------------------------------------------
If you try to uninstall PowerDesk95, you will see the error
message "Error Deleting File." The files are not successfully
removed.
Procomm: Using the Procomm Plus 95 Web Browser
----------------------------------------------
If you are using this program, you will not be able to view
an HTML source file.
In addition, you cannot display the Internet properties dialog
box by clicking Setup and then clicking Browser Properties in
Procomm Plus 95. To view these properties, you must open Control
Panel, and then click the Internet icon.
Visual J++: Error Message Occurs in MS Visual J++
Developer Studio
--------------------------------------------------
When you are debugging a Java applet that was created in
Microsoft Visual J++ Developer Studio, you will see the
following error message: "The browser or interpreter you
specified has exited without running your program."
However, Internet Explorer will then run the Java applet
properly. Note that browsers and interpreters other than
Internet Explorer and Jview might not support Visual J++
debugging.
Visual J++: Using Visual J++ with
Internet Explorer 4.0 Preview Release
-------------------------------------
If you use Visual J++, you should install only the Internet
Explorer 4.0 Suite. Do not select Integrated Shell Mode during
installation. The Visual J++ debugger will not function if
Integrated Shell Mode is selected. This issue will be addressed
in a later release of Internet Explorer 4.0.
WebCommander: Running WebCommander
----------------------------------
If you run WebCommander, it installs Internet Explorer 2.0 by
default. If you are also running Internet Explorer 4.0, note
that WebCommander places shortcuts to Internet Explorer 2.0 on
the desktop that look like shortcuts to Internet Explorer 4.0.
WebEx: Running Traveling Software WebEx version 1.03
----------------------------------------------------
This program does not detect Internet Explorer 4.0. This issue
has been resolved in WebEx version 2.0 (Beta).
WebSurfer: Running NetManage WebSurfer version 4.5.2
----------------------------------------------------
Version 4.5.2 of WebSurfer is not compatible with Internet
Explorer 4.0. This problem does not exist with WebSurfer 5.0.
Web Weaver: "Save" and "Save As" Commands
Generate an Error in Web Weaver 97
-----------------------------------------
If you have a document open in Web Weaver 97, and then you
use the Save or Save As command, a page fault error occurs.
ZooWorks: Installing ZooWorks
-----------------------------
If you are installing ZooWorks and setup displays a dialog
box asking you to quit Internet Explorer, just turn off Web
View in Internet Explorer. To turn off Web View, right-click
the desktop, and then click Web View to remove the check mark.
Setup can then continue.
USING AMERICA ONLINE WITH INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0
===============================================
Installing Internet Explorer 4.0
--------------------------------
To install Internet Explorer 4.0, make sure you choose the option
to "Save It To Disk," which saves the installation files to your
hard disk. You can then install Internet Explorer 4.0 from your
hard disk, which is much quicker than downloading it over the
Internet.
Using America Online to Browse the Web
--------------------------------------
This section pertains to you if you have installed America
Online 3.0 for Windows 95 and you use America Online to browse
the Web.
If you use AOL to browse the Internet, and you have the Internet
Explorer 4.0 Preview Release installed, you might get an error
message or experience some difficulty browsing the Internet. If
this happens, just dial AOL again and restart the session.
Using Internet Explorer 4.0 Information Delivery
------------------------------------------------
Internet Explorer 4.0 information delivery to the desktop
("subscriptions") does not work for AOL customers in this
Preview Release.

work for pages loaded from URLs)
OVERVIEW OF THE CACHE STRUCTURE
===============================
With the latest release of Internet Explorer and the Internet SDK,
it is expected that many different programs will take advantage of
the caching support provided. This means that there could be
thousands of URLs downloaded and kept in the cache.
Having thousands of URLs cached into a single directory causes
performance to degrade on computers running Windows 95, which uses
the FAT file system. There are two primary reasons:
- There is a linear search algorithm in FAT to look up a directory
entry.
- The in-memory structure of the directory entry caching used by
FAT does not work by directory but by individual file, causing
it to access the disk more often.
This is the main reason there are multiple directories in the
cache. Internet Explorer directs each URL into one of the multiple
directories (buckets), where the downloaded data is kept in the
form of a file. An index entry is created in the index file(s)
in that directory.
For more information about caching or how to use Internet Explorer,
click the Help menu in Internet Explorer.
USING A LOCAL AREA NETWORK PROXY OR FIREWALL
============================================
If you want to use a proxy or firewall to protect your local area
network from being accessed by others on the Internet, carry out
the following steps, which set up your computer to gain access to
the Internet through a firewall:
1. Run the Internet Connection Wizard:
- Click the Start button, point to Programs, and then point to
Accessories.
- Point to Internet Tools, and then click Get On The Internet.
2. Configure your computer to connect to the Internet by using
TCP/IP on your local area network.
3. When you are prompted for the gateway address, type the
address supplied by your network administrator only if your
organization uses gateways for routing information over the
network.
NOTE: The gateway computer is not the same as the proxy or
firewall computer that protects your local area network
from the Internet, so do not type your proxy or firewall
address here.
4. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click
Control Panel.
5. Double-click the Internet icon, and then click the Connection
tab.
6. In the Proxy area, select the Connect To The Internet Through
A Proxy Server check box.
7. Click Change Proxy Settings.
8. In the first text box, type the HTTP server address for the
computer you want to use as the proxy server. In the second text
box, type the port number. The following is an example of a proxy
server and port number:
http://myproxy.mycompany.com:80
In this example, you would type http://myproxy.mycompany.com in
the first text box, and 80 in the second text box.
You can use a different proxy for different types of addresses.
However, if you want to use the same proxy for all types of
addresses, make sure you select the Use Same Proxy Server For All
Addresses check box.
9. In the Exceptions area, click in the text box, and then type the
names of the computers, domains, and ports on the Internet that,
when accessed, will not go through the proxy server. Separate each
item you type with a semicolon (;). If you do not know what to type
here, see your network administrator.
If you do not want to use the proxy for local addresses, make sure
you select the Do Not Use Proxy For Local (Intranet) Addresses
check box. Local addresses are defined as those where the server
name does not contain a period (.). For example:
http://internalweb/ is a local address.
http://www.microsoft.com/ is not a local address.
For Help on these items, click the ? in the title bar, and then
click the item.
10. When you have finished changing settings, click OK.
11. Click OK again to close the Internet properties in Control Panel.
If you are running Internet Explorer, you need to restart
your computer so that the new proxy settings can take effect.
This release of Internet Explorer does not support Auto-Proxy.
Support for this feature will be added for the beta 2 release.
Using the Novell NetWare 32-bit Client
--------------------------------------
If you are using the Novell NetWare 32-bit client with Windows 95,
add the following registry entry to your system:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
DontUseDNSLoadBalancing = (REG_DWORD) 1
This setting will ensure correct usage of proxy servers with
Internet Explorer on your network. This is will be fixed in future
updates.
Auto-Proxy Configuration Does Not Work Properly
-----------------------------------------------
If you try to use Auto-Proxy configuration, you will get an error
message, which you can ignore. You can avoid this problem by not
entering any information in the Automatic Configuration dialog box
on the Connection tab in Internet Properties.
Or, you can delete the following registry tree:
HKEY_Classes_root/Autoproxytypes
USING INTERNET EXPLORER WITH SOCKS PROXY SERVERS
================================================
If you are setting up Internet Explorer with a Socks proxy server, you
must set it up separately from other proxy information (for example,
HTTP, FTP, or Gopher). In most cases, this means that all other proxy
fields should be left blank and the Socks field should contain the
address of your Socks proxy server. The only exception is when you
are using a Socks proxy and a different proxy (for example, HTTP) on
the same connection. If you are having trouble, please contact your
network administrator for information about Socks and proxy servers.
USING PROGRESSIVE NETWORKS' REALAUDIO SUPPORT
=============================================
Microsoft Internet Explorer includes support for Progressive Networks'
RealAudio. This enables you to listen to audio files in real time
over a dial-up modem or direct-network Internet connection. To use
RealAudio, you must have a Windows 95-supported sound card installed
in your computer. RealAudio works best on 486/33 or faster processors.
To try RealAudio, connect to http://www.realaudio.com.
NOTE: RealAudio will not work if your connection is routed through
a proxy or firewall.
USING INTERNET EXPLORER WITH VIRTUAL MEMORY
===========================================
Internet Explorer requires you to use virtual memory in order to
run properly. To make sure you are using virtual memory:
1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click
Control Panel.
2. Click the System icon, and then click the Performance tab.
3. Click Virtual Memory.
4. If you are specifying virtual memory settings, clear the
Disable Virtual Memory check box. If this check box is selected,
Internet Explorer will not run.
TIP: You can set Windows to manage virtual memory for you by
selecting the Let Windows Manage My Virtual Memory check
box.
TASK SCHEDULER
==============
Microsoft Task Scheduler helps you automate routine tasks for your
computer.
The new Task Scheduler replaces System Agent on Windows 95 computers,
which was included in Microsoft Plus!, and the Windows NT AT service.
If you have Microsoft Plus! installed, your existing tasks will be
upgraded to the new format. Existing AT tasks on Windows NT will also
be upgraded.
If you have scheduled tasks to run, make sure that the Task Scheduler
service is started by carrying out the following steps:
1. Open the Scheduled Tasks folder.
2. Click the Advanced menu, and then click Start Service.
Remotely Managing Tasks on Windows NT from a Windows 95 Computer
----------------------------------------------------------------
If you want to use Task Scheduler to manage scheduled tasks on
Windows NT from a Windows 95 client computer, you must install
some additional networking components on your Windows 95 computer.
These components allow Windows 95-to-Windows NT registry access.
For more information, see the section on networking and the
registry in the Windows 95 setup documentation.
Icon Doesn't Appear on Taskbar in Windows NT
--------------------------------------------
If you are running Scheduling Agent with Windows NT, an icon does
not appear on the taskbar as it does when you are running it with
Windows 95. This will be fixed in a future release.
Executing Tasks When the Computer Is Idle
-----------------------------------------
If you used a computer running Windows 95 to schedule a task, and
you set the start time to run when the computer has been idle for
a specified period, the setting is ignored by computers running
Windows NT. However, the setting is preserved if the task is again
run on a computer running Windows 95.
Differences Between Windows 95 and Windows NT
---------------------------------------------
Because these operating systems are different, you will see the
following differences in functionality:
Windows 95 supports:
- Power management
Windows NT supports:
- Task security via the NTFS file system
More Information
----------------
The Task Scheduler Help files are integrated with the system Help
files. If you want to display only Task Scheduler Help, carry out
the following steps:
1. On the Start menu, click Run.
2. Type the path to the Task Scheduler Help file, Mstask.hlp. For
example, you might type:
C:\Windows\Help\Mstask.hlp
If you don't know the path to the Mstask.hlp file, you can use the
Find command on the Start menu to locate it.
UPDATED DIALING RULES
=====================
This release includes updated dialing rules for local, long-
distance, and international calls in several countries. These
updates (1) correct problems in the original release of Windows 95
and (2) implement new dialing rules for countries that have changed
their dialing rules since the original release of Windows 95.
During Setup, the updated rules are automatically inserted into the
[CountryOverrides] section of the Telephon.ini file in the Windows
directory.
New Dialing Rules Not Yet in Effect
-----------------------------------
The update includes dialing rule changes for France, Finland, and
Colombia. However, some of these new dialing procedures have not
yet actually gone into effect in these countries. (The France and
Finland changes go into effect in October 1996). The changes are
included now in anticipation of these future changes, because by
the time the Spanish, French, and Finnish versions of Internet
Explorer 4.0 are released, the changes will have gone into effect.
Reverting to Current Dialing Rules
----------------------------------
If you will be testing Internet Explorer 4.0 in France, Finland,
or Colombia before the new dialing procedures are in effect, you
need to use Notepad (or another text editor) to modify your
Telephon.ini file. To do this, carry out the following steps:
1. Make a backup copy of your Telephon.ini file (for example,
Telephon.sav).
2. Open the Telephon.ini file in Notepad (or another text editor).
3. In the [CountryOverrides] section, comment out the line that
corresponds to the country for which you want to revert to the
existing dialing procedures. To do this, insert a semicolon (;)
at the beginning of the line.
For example, to revert to the current rules for France, insert
a semicolon at the beginning of the line that starts with
"Country33=" so that it becomes ";Country33=33".
4. Restart your computer.
When the change does go into effect, you can easily enable the new
dialing rules by reopening the Telephon.ini file in Notepad and
deleting the semicolon.
SOME PROPERTY NAMES TO CHANGE
=============================
Note that the names of the following properties will change soon:
- retval
- args
HTML UPDATES
============
The following HTML tags have been changed:
- A <FRAMESET> tag must split rows or columns or both. If a
<FRAMESET> tag is encountered that splits neither rows nor
columns, the begin tag will be ignored but the end tag
</FRAMESET> will not be ignored.
- A <BODY> tag (or other text or tags which force a BODY)
should not appear before a <FRAMESET> tag. If a BODY tag
does precede the FRAMESET, the contents of the FRAMESET
are discarded.
- A <SCRIPT> tag on a <FRAMESET> page must appear in the
<HEAD>.
