Tomb Raider
Matrox Mystique Accelerated Version 1.00
February 17, 1997
This is the update patch to the RETAIL version of Tomb Raider. This patch
will accelerate Tomb Raider on the Matrox Mystique cards. We didn't think that
it was possible, but we now have a Tomb Raider patch for a 2MB Mystique card!!
This is the first 2MB Hardware Accelerated port of the Tomb Raider game! Note
that the Tomb Raider patch works in a double buffered, hardware Z-buffer,
16bpp color mode. Hence, in order to allow such a game with all its amazing
worlds and textures to work on a 2MB Mystique card, the game runs in a 512x384
resolution. Owners of a 4MB Mystique card (or 2MB base plus 2MB expansion),
will have an advantage of running at a resolution of 640x480. Owners of a 4MB
Mystique card who wish to see the game in a 512x384 resolution can set an
environment variable; 'set mtx_lowres=1' before running the game. Doing a
'set mtx_lowres=0' or 'set mtx_lowres=' will make the game work in 640x480
again.
Known problems:
[1] Sometimes, when bringing up the 'Control' option from the Tomb Raider
inventory ring, the game might behave strangely and cause the system to crash.
This does not usually happen in the Title screen but mainly during the game
itself (when pressing Escape to select the 'Control' inventory option).
Differences between V1.00Beta2 and this version:
[1] The color brightness of the game was improved.
[2] 2MB Mystique support!!
Differences between V1.00Beta1 and V1.00Beta2:
[1] The Joystick support was put back into the game.
[2] The game will now run properly with the Win95 AutoRun feature of the
retail Tomb Raider CD-ROM.
Installing the MGA Mystique patch for Tomb Raider:
1) Install the original game. If installing under Win95, the game will then
run automatically after the installation is complete. Please exit the game at
this point as the Mystique patch is not yet enabled.
2) Run the tomb_mys.exe file in your Tomb Raider game directory. The
tomb.exe file should be overwritten and this tomb_mys.txt file will be added.
3) When under Win95, using the AutoRun feature of the Tomb Raider CD-ROM is
the simplest way to run the game. One could also create a shortcut on the
Win95 desktop. This shortcut will point to the tomb.pif file which has the
required MS-DOS box properties. Note that switching to the Win95 desktop
while the game is running will terminate the game. Even though all the Win95
shortcut keys have been disabled in the tomb.pif, some keyboards still have
the Windows Logo key that will interrupt the game and cause it to be
terminated. This is a not a great experience if the user didn't get a chance
to save their game! But, there exists a utility that allows the user to turn
off the Windows Logo key while in a DOS Session. It is up to the user to find
such a utility.
4) When running under regular DOS, run the game by just typing 'tomb'.
Running the game under regular DOS is recommended for better performance.
A note on savegames: With the Mystique Tomb Raider patch, it is possible to
load savegames that were saved with the VGA version of Tomb Raider. But, it
is NOT possible to do the opposite (i.e. load Mystique Tomb Raider patch
savegames with the VGA version of Tomb Raider).
