  36. The Play Editor 
  37.  
  38.      Football Pro '97 has a sophisticated Play Editor that allows you to 
  39. create virtually any type of offensive or defensive scheme.  You can 
  40. build customized playbooks by creating all-new plays or by modifying 
  41. some of the over 10,000 plays included with the game.  After you have 
  42. created a play, you can test its effectiveness by practicing it against 
  43. a variety of opposing formations on the Practice Field.  Once the play 
  44. is perfected, the Game Plan Editor allows you to assemble your plays 
  45. into opponent-specific Offensive and Defensive Game Plans.  In addition 
  46. to customizing the plays you can also personalize how the computer will 
  47. use your them by modifying one of the stock coaching profiles.  Each 
  48. profile consists of over 2500 game situations in which you can decide 
  49. what happens.

  52. The Player Ratings Editor 
  53.  
  54.      Football Pro '97 includes a Player Ratings Profile Editor that lets 
  55. you reassign player ratings based on your own criteria.  You may edit 
  56. any of the eight ratings for any position and, from the Pro Bowl Screen, 
  57. edit and apply Pro Bowl player selection criteria.  The Formula screen 
  58. allows you to create a formula for the rating, while the Results screen 
  59. allows you to see how players are ranked and to assign new ratings based 
  60. on one of four distribution curves.  When you are satisfied with the 
  61. results, you may save the new ratings to the original league or to a 
  62. newly-created league.  You may also go the View All Ratings screen to 
  63. edit the ratings for individual players.  In addition , you can save any 
  64. formulas you create into a Player Ratings Profile.  You may create 
  65. formulas to establish each individual rating for each position.  For 
  66. example,  you may create a QB strength formula, a Defensive End agility 
  67. formula and so forth.

  69. League Play 
  70.  
  71.      Football Pro '97 offers you the choice of competing in the default 
  72. NFLPI 1996 (30 teams) league or building one or more new leagues of your 
  73. own.  The full version includes six career leagues filled with players 
  74. who are members of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA).  In addition to 
  75. the NFLPA leagues there are several other fictional player leagues of 
  76. varying sizes (8,10,12,18,28).  Over the course of a season players and 
  77. teams will accumulate statistics in over 1500 available categories.  At 
  78. the end of a season players will age and possibly retire.  When starting 
  79. a new season you have the option of dumping all of the players into a 
  80. common draft pool.  Each team can then draft players one at a time to 
  81. fill out their rosters.  A Free agent draft is also available at the 
  82. beginning of each season.  After the draft your players are run through 
  83. training camp where you can allocate training time for each position.  
  84. You might want your running backs spending training time on wind sprints 
  85. to increase their speed while having the Defensive backs spend time 
  86. watching game films to increase their intelligence.  It is all up to you 
  87. take your team to the championship.

  90. Game Length 
  91.  
  92.      This demo version allows you one quarter of play (5-15 
  93. minutes).  At the end of the first quarter it will return you back to 
  94. main menu.

  96. MultiPlayer Play
  97.  
  98.      MultiPlayer play has been disabled in the demo.  The full version of 
  99. Football Pro '97 supports head to head games over a LAN or modem.  
  100. Internet play is also available over the Sierra Internet Gaming System.

  102. Reduced Animation and Sound Quality
  103.  
  104.      The full version of Football Pro '97 offers 16 angles of animation
  105. rotation and 22Khz sounds.  This demo limits the animation to 8 angles of
  106. rotation and 11Khz sounds.

  113. System Requirements

  115. Football Pro `97 requires the following minimum machine configuration:

  130.    12 MB Virtual Memory and 30 MB disk space free (after install)

  141. What is Virtual Memory?
  142.  
  143.      Virtual memory is a method that uses disk space to supplement 
  144. your machine's RAM.  When Football Pro `97 is running, it creates a 
  145. file on your hard drive (known as a swap file) which is used to store 
  146. information when there is not enough available RAM.  The size of the 
  147. swap file is equal to the virtual memory requirement (12 MB) minus the 
  148. amount of available RAM.   Systems with more RAM will have smaller 
  149. swap files created.  The swap file is deleted automatically when you 
  150. quit Football Pro `97.
  151.  
  152.      Due to the swap file requirements of Windows 95, you will need at 
  153. least 30 MB of free disk space on the drive where your swap file 
  154. resides, or Football Pro '97 will get errors allocating memory.
  155.  
  156. Installation Path
  157.  
  158.      Football Pro '97 MUST be installed in a directory named 
  159. \SIERRA\FBPRO97 for all features to function properly.  It is not 
  160. important on which physical drive (C,D etc.) it is installed, but it 
  161. MUST be installed off the drive's root directory in \SIERRA\FBPRO97.
  162.

  171. Should you install Football Pro '97 to a directory other than 
  172. \SIERRA\FOOTBALL you may have problems when using custom data (game 
  173. plans, plays, profiles, etc.) or when playing multiplayer games.
  174.  
  175.      In addition, Football Pro '97 cannot use game plans that include 
  176. plays saved to floppy disks, or stored in the EXTRA directory on the 
  177. CD.  These plays should be kept in the \SIERRA\FBPRO97\CUSTOM 
  178. directory.
  179.  
  180. To use the plays in the EXTRA directory, copy the plays you want 
  181. into your \SIERRA\FBPRO97\CUSTOM directory.  With Win95 Explorer,
  182. select these files and right click to bring up the short menu.  
  183. Pick "Properties" and toggle the "read only" file attribute box
  184. to the off setting.

  188. C  WINDOWS 95 COMPATIBILITY
  189.  
  190. Installing the game to your hard drive
  191.  
  192.      Football Pro `97 supports the Windows 95 Autoplay feature. Follow 
  193. these steps to install and run the game under Windows 95:
  194.  
  195.    1)  Start Windows 95.
  196.    2)  Insert the Football Pro `97 CD into your CD-ROM drive.
  197.    3)  If the game has not yet been installed, you will be asked if 
  198.        you wish to install it.  To proceed with the installation, 
  199.        click "Yes".
  200.    4)  Follow the on-screen directions to complete the installation 
  201.        process.
  202.  
  203.      Note:  If Autoplay has been disabled on your system you will need 
  204. to double click on the CD-ROM icon in your MY COMPUTER folder.
  205.  
  206. Running The Game
  207.  
  208.      Football Pro `97 is designed to start automatically when you 
  209. insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive.  When you insert the CD, you 
  210. will be asked if you want to start the game; click on "yes" to run the 
  211. game.
  212.  
  213.      Note:  If Autoplay has been disabled on your system you will need 
  214. to double click on the CD-ROM icon in your MY COMPUTER folder.
  215.  
  216.      You may also start the game by selecting it from your Start Menu 
  217. under the SIERRA group.  If you wish to launch the game using some of 
  218. the optional command line parameters, create a shortcut for HIKE.EXE 
  219. and edit the properties to include the options you want.  
  220.  
  221. Screen Savers
  222.  
  223.      Some screen saver programs may interrupt Football Pro `97 and 
  224. prevent it from continuing afterwards.  We HIGHLY recommend that you 
  225. do NOT use any screen saver programs while playing Football Pro `97.  
  226. This includes the Windows 95 screen savers.
  227.  
  228. Task Swapping
  229.  
  230.      We recommend that you quit all other applications prior to 
  231. running Football Pro `97, or you may experience game lock-ups or other 
  232. problems. When Windows 95 is focused on Football Pro '97, it will not 
  233. allow sounds for other applications to play.  Football Pro '97 will 
  234. perform best if no other applications are open in Windows 95.

  237. Removing The Game From Your Hard Drive
  238.  
  239.      To remove the game from your hard drive, open the Sierra folder 
  240. in the Windows 95 Start Menu, Select "Setup & Uninstall".  This will 
  241. start the Sierra Setup program that will allow you to uninstall any 
  242. Sierra product.  Select Uninstall from the main menu.  Choose FPS: 
  243. Football Pro '97 from the list.  All of the original Football Pro `97 
  244. program files will be removed.

  250. CD-ROM Troubleshooting
  251.  
  252.      If you are experiencing  "CDR-101 Read errors" or are 
  253. experiencing random lock-ups, then  make sure you are using the latest 
  254. CD-ROM drivers and the correct  version of MSCDEX.EXE for your 
  255. revision of MS-DOS.  To verify that you are using the correct device 
  256. drivers in your CONFIG.SYS file, contact your CD-ROM drive 
  257. manufacturer.  To verify that you are using the latest version of 
  258. MSCDEX.EXE, please examine the chart below:
  259.  
  260.    MS-DOS 5.0 Users....................Use MSCDEX 2.21 or above
  261.    MS-DOS 6.0 Users....................Use MSCDEX 2.22 or above
  262.    MS-DOS 6.20-6.22 Users..............Use MSCDEX 2.23 or above

  265.      NOTE - MSCDEX 2.22 is included with MS-DOS 6.0, and MSCDEX 2.23 
  266. is included with MS-DOS 6.20-6.22.  To update from an older version of 
  267. MSCDEX, simply copy the updated file from the DOS directory into the 
  268. directory where you are loading MSCDEX.  For more information, please 
  269. refer to your CD-ROM hardware manual or contact your CD-ROM drive 
  270. manufacturer.

  272. SCSI Drivers
  273.  
  274.      If your system is equipped with a SCSI hard drive, you will need 
  275. to make sure that you are loading the appropriate SCSI driver in your 
  276. CONFIG.SYS file.  For additional information or instructions on how to 
  277. accomplish this task, please refer to your hard drive or SCSI 
  278. controller documentation or manufacturer.
  279.  
  280. Problems with Movies (AVIs)
  281.  
  282.      Some users may see vertical black and white lines and a message
  283. "Video not available" when the program tries to play movies (AVIs).  
  284. This indicates that the Windows95 Media Player is not properly 
  285. installed.  (This player is normally installed with Windows 95, but 
  286. you may have chosen not to install it to save disk space.)  This does 
  287. not affect game play, but you may correct the problem by installing 
  288. the Media Player from your Windows 95 disks.  (For information on 
  289. installing Windows 95 components, consult your Windows 95 
  290. documentation.)

  296. Additional Command Line Options

  298.    Option      Effect

  300.      -l        Save a log of all play-by-play information.  A weeks 
  301.                worth of games will be appended to a single file if you 
  302.                are simulating league games.  The PLAY.LOG file will be 
  303.                deleted at the start of a new weeks worth of games.
  304.      -f        Print all output to a text file called PRINT.OUT.  You 
  305.                can view the file with any ASCII text editor.
