  13. QUICK START

  15. Getting Started
  16. - After you install Dogz, you'll see a "Dogz" icon in a Windows
  17.   Program Group (or under the "Programs" item of the START menu
  18.   in Windows '95) named "Yourname's Dogz" (where "yourname" is your
  19.   first name).
  20. - Start Dogz by double-clicking on the icon named "Dogz" (or simply 
  21.   selecting the "Dogz" icon under Windows '95).
  22. - This will open the Dogz Adoption Kit
  23. - You can pet and play with any of the five Dogz breeds and decide
  24.   which one is best for you!
  25. - When you decide which one you want to adopt, click the "Adopt 
  26.   Me Now" button.
  27.  
  28. Important Note
  29. - Dogz love to run around on your computer screen.
  30. - Whenever you let a Dogz loose on the screen, you will not
  31.   be able to click on any other application until you...
  32.  
  33.   1) put the Dogz back into the Doghouse, or
  34.   2) Quit Dogz, or
  35.   3) Press ALT-TAB to switch to another application, or
  36.   4) Press ESCAPE (this will instantly pop the Dogz back into
  37.      their Doghouses)

  39. In the Adoption Kit you can pet and play with five different breeds 
  40. of Dogz.  Once you have adopted your own Dogz, you will have many 
  41. other things to do.  You will be able to feed, play with and train 
  42. your Dogz.  You will be able to groom them to change their color. 
  43. Your Dogz will be able to act as Guard Dogz, protecting your computer 
  44. from monitor burn-in and file snoops.  Over time, your adopted
  45. puppyDogz will grow up to be a full size Dogz.

  47. IN THE ADOPTION KIT TRY THIS...
  48.  
  49. Picking up your Dogz
  50. - To pick up Dogz and move them to a new location, click the 
  51.   right mouse button while the cursor is anywhere over the Dogz.
  52. - Don't worry - this won't hurt it.  Releasing the mouse button 
  53.   will drop your Dogz safely to the desktop.
  54. - If you drop the Dogz back on top of its doghouse, it will pop
  55.   back into its doghouse.

  57. Dogz love to be petted!
  58. - You can pet your Dog at any time.  To do this, simply click and
  59.   hold the left mouse button while the cursor is over the Dogz.
  60.   The cursor will change to a "petting hand."
  61. - Stroke the Dog with the cursor while holding down the left 
  62.   mouse button.
  63. - If you pet your Dogz just right and long enough, it might 
  64.   roll over to let you scratch its stomach, or even go to sleep.

  66. Sleeping
  67. - If you leave Dogz alone for several minutes, they usually
  68.   nod off to sleep.  You may even catch them dreaming!
  69. - A nice way to wake up Dogz is to pet them while they're
  70.   sleeping.

  73. KNOWN MISBEHAVIORS ("TROUBLESHOOTING")

  75. "I'm having trouble putting Dogz back into their Dogzhouses."
  76. - Make sure your cursor hand is positioned over the Dogzhouse when
  77.   you drop the Dogz off.
  78.  
  79. "My Dog disappears from the screen."
  80. - Like a real dog, your Dogz will sometimes run off on its own errands.
  81. - Try double-clicking the mouse to call your Dogz back.
  82.  
  83. "My Dog sometimes freezes on the screen."
  84. - Digital Dogz need to behave well and make sure they don't slow down
  85.   your system.  If an important application needs to control your
  86.   computer for a few seconds, your Dogz will hold still until that
  87.   application lets go.  It's nothing to worry about!
  88.  
  89. "The Dogz Playpen window has changed colors."
  90. - If you change your Display resolution or color palette while Dogz is 
  91.   running, your Dogz colors may shift undesirably.  To fix this, simply
  92.   quit and relaunch Dogz.
  93. - Also, when running on a system with only 256 colors, opening or selecting
  94.   another application can sometimes cause Dogz colors to change (the programs
  95.   are competing for the same colors).  If your Dogz turns black, changes
  96.   colors in an unexpected way, or the Playpen background colors become
  97.   distorted, try minimizing the Playpen window and re-opening it.
  98. - If this does not work, close and re-open Dogz and the problem should
  99.   go away.

  101. "Guard Dogz requires a password, but I did not set one!"
  102. - If you had already set a password for another screen saver, you may find
  103.   that this password is still required for Guard Dogz.
  104.  
  105. "I'm not hearing any sounds."
  106. - To hear your Dogz, you need a SoundBlaster(tm) compatible card 
  107.   installed.
  108. - Remember that if Dogz is ever minimized or another application is
  109.   opened on top of Dogz (even when "Always on Top" is set), your Dogz
  110.   will keep quiet.  Only when Dogz is the foremost application will
  111.   sounds be heard.

  113. "The Playpen window sometimes appears on screen over my screen saver."
  114. - If you set the Playpen window to be "Always on Top" and Dogz is
  115.   left running in Fullscreen mode, on some computers, the Playpen
  116.   window will be visible above other screen savers when they appear
  117.   on screen.  To eliminate this problem, either turn off the "Always
  118.   on Top" setting or be sure to put your Dogz back into the Playpen
  119.   when you are finished playing with your Dogz.

  121. "Does Installing Dogz affect my system files?"
  122. - The files that come with PF. Magic Dogz are as system-friendly 
  123.   as possible.  Dogz won't crawl into your AUTOEXEC.BAT or 
  124.   CONFIG.SYS files and mess them up.
