  5. Troubleshooting
  6. ---------------
  7.  
  8. If you are having trouble running Heroes of Might and Magic and you
  9. are running EMM386 or MemMaker try:
  10.  
  11.    1. Typing EMM386 OFF at your command prompt
  12.  
  13.       If EMM386 reports InActive then Heroes should run properly.
  14.  
  15.       Note: You will need to type EMM386 OFF everytime you reboot 
  16.             your computer.
  17.  
  18.    2. Try REMing out EMM386 in your CONFIG.SYS:
  19.  
  20.       type the following at your command prompt and hit ENTER.
  21.  
  22.          EDIT C:\CONFIG.SYS   
  23.  
  24.             (This will edit your system configuration)
  25.  
  26.          find the line 
  27.  
  28.             DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE 
  29.  
  30.          or the like and add to the front of the line REM ... i.e.
  31.  
  32.             REM DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE
  33.  
  34.          go to the File Menu and Select Exit and answer YES to save 
  35.          the changes.
  36.  
  37.          If you need to re-install EMM386 for any reason you can remove
  38.          the REM at the front of the line.
  39.  
  40.       You will need to re-boot your computer for this change to take effect.
  41.  
  42.  
  43. If the install program says you do not have enough free space to Install
  44. Heroes of Might and Magic.
  45.  
  46.    1. If you are running DoubleSpace, DriveSpace, Stacker or any kind of
  47.       disk compression:
  48.  
  49.          a. Dos reports what the disk compressor tells it to report and
  50.             not the TRUE value of Disk Space available.
  51.  
  52.             Your must free up space to install Properly. Failure to ensure
  53.             enough REAL space is available will result in Heroes not 
  54.             functioning properly.
  55.  
  56.    2. If you are running from Windows or Windows 95:
  57.          
  58.          a. Windows tends to save the files even after they have been deleted
  59.             or moved to the Recycle Bin.
  60.  
  61.          b. Norton Utilities also will report more Disk Space then is available
  62.             due to the Recycle Bin and protecting deleted files.
  63.  
  64.          c. Even though Dos reports you have enough free Disk Space you
  65.             can only use whatever space if really available.
  66.  
  67.       Fix:
  68.  
  69.          If you are running Windows 95 and Norton Utilities for Windows 95
  70.          you must select the Recycle Bin by clicking with the Right Mouse 
  71.          Button, then selecting Empty Norton Protected Files.
  72.  
  73.          If you are using another version of a Utilitiy that saves deleted
  74.          files then you must discard those files as well.

  78. The following information supplements that found in the manual.

  80. Movement Cost
  81. -------------
  82. The following terrains cost extra to move through for all heroes 
  83. except Barbarians:
  84.  
  85. Snow   1.5 times normal cost
  86. Swamp  1.5 times normal cost
  87. Desert 2   times normal cost
  88.  
  89. Diagonal movement costs 1.5 times normal cost.

  92. Recruiting Heroes
  93. -----------------
  94. The same two heroes are available throughout your kingdom to recruit at
  95. any given time.  These choices change at the beginning of each new week.

  99. Spells
  100. ------
  101. Berzerk - Berzerk lasts as many rounds as the casting hero's spellpower, 
  102. or until the affected troop makes an attack.  The berzerk unit will always
  103. attack if it starts its turn next to another unit, otherwise it will move 
  104. aimlessly.
  105.  
  106. Haste - Hasted troops speed becomes 'Very Fast' (faster than the fastest 
  107. natural speed).

  115. Arrow Keys - Move hero in indicated direction.
  116. Arrow Keys (with <Ctrl> held down) - Scroll screen in indicated direction.

  120. Space Bar - Skip the current troop's turn.
  121. 'A' - Auto combat.
  122. 'C' - Cast spell.
  123. 'T' - View information on the current troop.
