  2. THE STONEKEEP INTERACTIVE PREVIEW

  4.   This is the first level out of the complete Stonekeep experience.
  5.   During this preview, you will be able to search the halls of an
  6.   ancient ruined Keep, find treasure, fight monsters, increase your
  7.   character's skills and experience the magic that is Stonekeep!
  8.  
  9.   All this, and the preview is only the first two maps out of a
  10.   total of twenty-two!

  12.   This is not a feature-disabled version of the game.  Everything you
  13.   can do on the first level of the full Stonekeep package, you can
  14.   do in this preview.

  39. HOW TO PLAY: THE BASICS

  41.   Use the keyboard to move through the dungeon environment.

  43.     W or Up Arrow..... Move Forward
  44.     S or Down Arrow... Move Backwards
  45.     A or Left Arrow... Turn Left
  46.     D or Right Arrow.. Turn Right

  48.   Use the mouse to interact with the environment. The cursor will
  49.   change to show what command the left and right mouse button will do.

  53.     Grabbing Hand..... Pick up item:
  54.                        The left mouse button will pick up the item and leave
  55.                        it in your hand for you to use, the right mouse button
  56.                        places it directly in your inventory

  72. HOW TO PLAY: THE SCROLL & INVENTORY
  73.  
  74.   Your inventory scroll is a magick scroll that will hold an unlimited
  75.   number of items.  When the cursor is in the shape of an item, that is
  76.   called the active item.  To add the active item to your inventory,
  77.   move it to the middle of the right side of the screen.  The cursor
  78.   should turn into a scroll, click a mouse button at that point to open
  79.   the inventory.  Drop the item on the inventory scroll to store it
  80.   there for later use.

  82.   You can throw the active item by clicking in mid-air.  The higher the
  83.   item is on the screen, the harder you will toss it.

  85.   When you pick up items, the mouse buttons do different things.
  86.   Experiment with them to see what they do.

  88. HOW TO PLAY: THE MIRROR
  89.  
  90.   The mirror will open automatically whenever you open the inventory.  You
  91.   can also display the bottom of the mirror on-screen at all times to keep
  92.   informed of your character's vitality (life points) and current direction.
  93.   The various gems on the mirror will change the display.  Experiment.

  95.   Besides looking at your character, you can use the mirror to equip and
  96.   use items on him.  Simply drag an active item on to the character, and
  97.   click.  If the item is a piece of armor, or an item like a scroll or
  98.   potion, the character is smart enough to use the item automatically.
  99.   If it is an item that must be placed into an individual hand, you must
  100.   move the item over the proper hand first.

  102. HOW TO PLAY: THE JOURNAL
  103.  
  104.   The Journal is an object that you must find in the game.  Do so, because
  105.   it contains valuable information about your character and records more
  106.   information as you move through Stonekeep and beyond.
  107.  
  108.   The Journal is divided into sections.  Use the number keys to display a
  109.   section, or the mouse to move through the Journal.
  110.  
  111.   1: Character Information
  112.      The first section shows your character's statistics and skills.  Refer
  113.   to this to track your character's improvement, and check on his status.
  114.  
  115.   2: Journal Notes
  116.      If you ever need to record information about your game, use this
  117.   section.  The quill cursor shows where you can write.  Press ESC when
  118.   you are done writing.
  119.  
  120.   3: Magick Runes
  121.      In this Preview, this section will never be used.  In the full
  122.   experience, this is where your character records runes and prepares
  123.   his spells.

  125.   4: Clues
  126.      Many important clues are automatically recorded here for you.  Refer
  127.   here when you need help.
  128.  
  129.   5: Items
  130.      Everytime you find a new item, a record of the item is added to this
  131.   section.  You can write your own notes here, as well.

  133.   6: Maps
  134.      This is the automap.  Use the quill to write notes in squares you
  135.   have visited.  Every square you walk into will be recorded here.  Use the
  136.   TAB key to quickly show the map.

  146. HINTS
  147.  
  148.   * Equip yourself with weapons and armor as soon as you can.  Explore the
  149.     first tower to get yourself into combat shape.
  150.  
  151.   * Your character will attempt to strike where the attack cursor is located.
  152.     Monsters have weak areas of armor.  Aim for them.
  153.  
  154.   * Roots are healing items.  Use them when your vitality gets low.  Potions
  155.     are even better.
  156.  
  157.   * When you get a new key, return to locked doors you previously visited.
  158.     It's often worth the extra effort.
  159.  
  160.   * Move around in combat.  It's harder for the monsters to hit you that way.
  161.  
  162.   * On slower machines, or machines with 8 megabytes of RAM, a smartdrive
  163.     of 256k will increase performance.  Try: "SMARTDRV 256 <enter>"
