  26. NEW FEATURES
  27.  
  28. VirusScan for Windows 3.1x now implements VShield as a VxD.
  29. This replaces the VShield Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR), 
  30. adding significant feature enhancements and reducing 
  31. conventional memory footprint. Unlike its predecessor, 
  32. VShield operates directly in the Windows environment, no 
  33. longer relying on a DOS TSR. 
  34.  
  35. A VxD is an ideal filter to prevent the spread or activation
  36. of Macro viruses attempting to replicate within Windows
  37. applications, such as Microsoft Word for Windows.
  38.  
  39. When a virus is found, VShield's VxD can be pre-configured
  40. to prompt the user for action or to automatically repair, 
  41. quarantine, deny access to, or delete infected files.
  42.  
  43. McAfee's new VShield VxD is flexible, allowing the user
  44. to configure when to conduct a scan (for example: on file run,
  45. copy, create, or rename; on floppy disk access) and which
  46. files to include. It also contains 100% of the detection
  47. power of McAfee's anti-virus products.

  363. 1.  The current version is unaware of a pre-existing McAfee
  364.     VirusScan for Windows product. DO NOT INSTALL VShield
  365.     into the same location as existing VirusScan products.

  367. 2.  This version will not detect previously installed
  368.     versions of VShield and will not remove the path
  369.     entry made to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  371. 3.  In order to re-enable vshield after disabling it, you need
  372.     to right mouse click and select enable.

  461. The Eicar Standard AntiVirus Test File is a combined effort 
  462. by anti-virus vendors throughout the world to come up with
  463. one standard by which customers can verify their anti-virus 
  464. installations. To test your installation, copy the following 
  465. line into its own file and name it EICAR.COM.

  469. When done, you will have a 69 or 70 byte file.

  471. When VirusScan is applied to this file, Scan will report

  474. It is important to know that THIS IS NOT A VIRUS. However,
  475. users often have the need to test that their installations
  476. function correctly. The anti-virus industry, through the
  477. European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research, has
  478. adopted this standard to facilitate this need.

  480. Please delete the file when installation testing is
  481. completed so unsuspecting users are not unnecessarily 
  482. alarmed.
