-
-
- -----------------------------
- INSTALLING QUIKMENU 4 WINDOWS
- -----------------------------
-
- Before you can begin using QuikMenu 4 Windows you must run the
- QuikMenu Setup program from Windows. In most cases you cannot
- simply copy the software onto your hard drive. The files on the
- NeoSoft distribution disks are stored in a special compressed form
- to save space. The Setup program is the only way to insure that
- QuikMenu is properly unpacked and installed. Before installing
- QuikMenu on a NETWORK, please read the Network Considerations
- section below. To install QuikMenu, follow the steps below:
-
- NOTE: Depending on where you obtained your copy of this
- program, you may not need to run Setup - so don't panic if
- you can't find it. If you have a file named QMWIN.EXE, you
- have most of the program (except icons and utilities). Just
- copy that file to your hard drive in a directory of your
- choice and launch it from the Windows Program Manager, File
- Manager or Windows 95 Explorer.
-
- 1. Start Windows.
-
- 2. If you received QuikMenu on diskette, place it into the floppy
- drive now. If you downloaded QuikMenu in archived format, use
- PKUNZIP to uncompress the files to a working directory on your
- hard disk.
-
- 3. Activate the Windows Program Manager.
-
- 4. Select "Run..." from the Program Manager's "File" menu. If you
- are using Windows 95, the "Run" option can be selected from the
- "Start" menu.
-
- 5. In the "Command Line" field enter one of the following:
-
- - If you placed the QuikMenu diskette into drive A:, type:
- A:\SETUP
-
- - If you placed the QuikMenu diskette into drive B:, type:
- B:\SETUP
-
- - If you downloaded QuikMenu type: C:\DIRNAME\SETUP (Remember
- to replace DIRNAME with the name of the directory where you
- uncompressed QuikMenu's files.)
-
- 6. Follow the instructions on the screen.
-
-
- --------------------------------------------
- MAKING QUIKMENU YOUR DEFAULT WINDOWS DESKTOP
- --------------------------------------------
-
- In order to make QuikMenu your default Windows desktop in place of
- the Program Manager or Win95 Explorer, you need to make a simple
- modification to the Windows SYSTEM.INI file. Using the QuikMenu 4
- Windows editor (or other ASCII text editor if you prefer) locate
- the Windows directory (usually C:\WINDOWS) and open the SYSTEM.INI
- file. Find the line that begins with "SHELL=". In Windows 3.1, the
- default shell is "SHELL=PROGMAN.EXE" and in Windows 95, it's
- "SHELL=EXPLORER.EXE". Duplicate the line and turn the original line
- into a comment by inserting a semicolon (;) in front of it. On the
- line without the semicolon, replace the default program name with
- "C:\QMWIN\QMWIN.EXE" like this:
-
- ;SHELL=PROGMAN.EXE
- SHELL=C:\QMWIN\QMWIN.EXE
-
- NOTE: If you installed QuikMenu in a directory other than the
- default suggested by the SETUP program, then substitute that
- directory for "C:\QMWIN" above. Save the file and exit Windows. The
- next time you start Windows, QuikMenu will be your default desktop.
-
- To restore your old Windows desktop, simply load the SYSTEM.INI
- file again, move the semicolon to the "SHELL=C:\QMWIN\QMWIN.EXE"
- line, save the file and restart Windows.
-
-
- ------------------------------
- NETWORK/MAILBOX CONSIDERATIONS
- ------------------------------
-
- Before installing QuikMenu on a network there are several things
- that you should consider. First of all, if you're not the Network
- Administrator then please ask permission before installing this
- program. On many types of networks, QuikMenu requires that you set
- certain file and directory privileges or access rights. If you are
- not authorized to install software on your network then you will
- not be able to correctly setup QuikMenu. The majority of these
- network considerations deal with office mail utility QuikMenu
- Mailbox (part of QuikMenu 4 Windows Professional).
-
- QUIKMENU MAILBOX (PROFESSIONAL EDITION ONLY)
- --------------------------------------------
-
- QuikMenu Mailbox 4 Windows was designed to be used either in
- conjunction with NeoSoft's DOS menuing system QuikMenu III, with
- QuikMenu 4 Windows as a standalone office mail utility. Since some
- users on the network may be using Windows and others working in
- DOS, QuikMenu Mailbox is an easy way for users to stay in contact
- no matter which environment they happen to be using. Regardless of
- how you decide to use QuikMenu Mailbox, the installation
- considerations are basically the same.
-
- There are two basic ways to install QuikMenu Mailbox on a network:
- Method 1: Install the program in a directory on the server and let
- everyone access it from there; or Method 2: Install the program on
- each individual workstation's hard drive.
-
- No matter how you install QuikMenu Mailbox, you must make certain
- that all users have access to a common mail directory on the
- server. This is where mail messages will be stored. We recommend
- that this directory be different than the directory where the
- Mailbox program is installed. If you've been using QuikMenu III's
- E-Mail utility then you no doubt already have a mail directory set
- up. If you plan on using both QuikMenu Mailbox under Windows and
- QuikMenu III under DOS then it's very important that you specify
- the same mail directory for both programs. Otherwise DOS and
- Windows users will not be able to exchange mail.
-
- If you've been using QuikMenu III's E-Mail utility then the
- installation program may be able to automatically detect the mail
- directory you're already using, depending on how you've setup
- QuikMenu. If you've set up an environment variable called
- "QUIKMENU" that points to each user's home or working directory
- then QuikMenu Mailbox should automatically detect the mail
- directory.
-
- Another easy way to insure that the mail directory starts out
- correctly, is to set up a "QMMAIL" environment variable before
- installing QuikMenu Mailbox. If you're using Novell Netware you can
- do this by simply adding the following line to your login script:
-
- DOS SET QMMAIL=F:\MAIL
-
- You may replace F:\MAIL with another directory if you like. If you
- don't want to use this method or Mailbox was unable to correctly
- detect the proper mail directory, then you will need to access the
- Set Preferences function from Mailbox's Options menu on each
- workstation to set the correct mail directory.
-
- Access rights or privileges are another important issue. Many
- networks, such as Novell Netware, allow users to be granted or
- restricted access to certain directories and files. In order for
- the mail system to work and to maintain compatibility with QuikMenu
- for DOS, users must be given full access to the mail directory.
- This will allow QuikMenu Mailbox to manage the creation, viewing
- and deletion of all mail messages.
-
- On most networks, QuikMenu Mailbox will be able to automatically
- detect the user name for each workstation on which it is run. The
- detected name should be the same as the name used when logging onto
- the network. However, there may be some situations where the
- program will be unable to detect the correct user name. In this
- event, QuikMenu Mailbox will prompt the user to enter a name and
- optionally a password if one has been chosen. If desired, you may
- also limit the user names that can be entered (See Restricting User
- Access below). It is critical that the user name be unique for each
- person accessing the network. Users must also be consistent when
- entering their name. For example, DAVE and DAVID are not going to
- be interpreted as the same person. There may also be situations
- where the name is correctly detected but not desirable for use,
- such as when a single workstation is used by multiple people. For
- this reason, QuikMenu Mailbox gives you several ways to bypass the
- detected name and force users to manually enter names. For
- information on how to do this, see the Command Line Options section
- below.
-
- RESTRICTING USER ACCESS:
-
- In many office environments it may be desirable to limit access to
- authorized users only. With QuikMenu Mailbox this can be done by
- creating a simple ASCII text file called MASTER.INI and placing it
- in the same directory as the QMMAIL.EXE file. To create the
- MASTER.INI file, you can use any text editor capable of saving
- files in ASCII format. The DOS Editor, Windows NotePad and the
- QuikMenu 4 Windows Editor are all capable of creating ASCII text
- files.
-
- In order for QuikMenu Mailbox to effectively limit who can send and
- receive mail, the MASTER.INI file must strictly adhere to a
- specific format. Remember, the MASTER.INI file must reside in the
- same directory as the QMMAIL.EXE file. The first line in the file
- must be "[Users]" with subsequent lines containing the names of
- authorized users followed by an equal (=) sign. After the equal
- sign you may optionally enter the user's full name. (Note the full
- name portion of the user entry is not currently used by QuikMenu
- Mailbox and may be left blank. An equal sign is still required
- however.) A correctly formatted MASTER.INI file should look
- something like this:
-
- [Users]
- Sally=
- Paul=Paul Stevens
- Sales=Sales Department
- Susan=
- Bob=
-
- For maximum security, have each user enter a personal password by
- selecting Preferences from the Options menu. The password combined
- with the MASTER.INI file, the Mail Editor's file encryption option
- and your own network privileges, should provide more than adequate
- security.
-
- To restore QuikMenu Mailbox's default unrestricted user mode,
- simply rename or erase the MASTER.INI file.
-
- INITIALIZING USER NAMES:
-
- When QuikMenu MailBox is first installed, you may notice that no
- user names appear in the "Select users to receive mail" dialog box.
- Unless you've created a MASTER.INI file as described above, users
- will not appear in the list until after they are sent mail for the
- first time. To send mail to users not appearing in the list, simply
- type their name in the "To" field of the "Send Mail" dialog box.
- (NOTE: If you're using the MASTER.INI file then the only way to add
- users is to edit the MASTER.INI file. See Restricting User Access
- above.)
-
- A simple way to insure that all users are available to receive mail
- is for the network administrator to send everyone a short mail
- message after installing the software. To do this, choose "Send
- Mail" from the "Mail" menu, type the names (8 letters max) of each
- user separated by spaces in the "To" field, enter a message in the
- message field, and click the "Send" button.
-
-
- --------------------
- COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
- --------------------
-
- QUIKMENU MAILBOX (PROFESSIONAL EDITION ONLY)
- --------------------------------------------
-
- ASK FOR USER NAME (/A)
-
- Use this command to require that users manually enter their
- name when QuikMenu Mailbox first executes. This is useful in
- situations where the name assigned to the workstation by the
- network is not the one you want to use when sending and
- receiving mail. This option should be used in conjunction with
- the Password option in Preferences to prevent users from
- accessing mail intended for someone else.
-
- Usage: /A
-
- Example: QMMAIL /A
-
- HIDE/DISABLE FILE ENCRYPTION OPTION (/E)
-
- This command is used to remove the "Encrypt Mail" option from
- the Mail Editor to prevent the creation of encrypted messages.
- This does not, however, prevent users from receiving and
- decoding encrypted messages intended for them.
-
- Usage: /E
-
- Example: QMMAIL /E
-
- HIDE/DISABLE PREFERENCES (/P)
-
- This command can be used to hide the "Set Preferences" function
- in the "Options" menu. This will prevent users from changing
- their mail directory, password and other critical settings.
-
- Usage: /P
-
- Example: QMMAIL /P
-
- BYPASS NETWORK AUTODETECT (/N)
-
- Use this command to bypass the network autodetect function and
- force the system to recognize a specific network. Normally this
- option should not be required, but may be used if your network
- is not correctly detected.
-
- Usage: /N# (where x equals one of the options below:)
-
- 1 Novell Netware
- 2 Novell Netware with NetBIOS emulation
- 3 NetBIOS
- 4 IBM PC Lan
- 5 Artisoft Lantastic
- 6 Unsupported network or none
-
- Example: QMMAIL /N5
-
- ADD CHANGE USER NAME CHOICE (/U)
-
- Use this command to add a "Change User Name" choice to the
- "Options" menu. This is useful in situations where multiple
- users access the same workstation. It should, however, be used
- in conjunction with the Password option in Preferences to
- prevent users from accessing mail intended for someone else.
-
- Usage: /U
-
- Example: QMMAIL /U
-
- You may also pass a user name directly to the program by placing it
- on the command line. For example: QMMAIL SALLY
-
-
- -----------------------------
- 100,000 WORD SPELLING CHECKER
- -----------------------------
-
- Only the registered version of QuikMenu 4 Windows includes access
- to an integrated 100,000 word spelling checker. So if you've tried
- to use the Spell Check option in the Editor, MailBox or Calendar
- without success, that's why.
