  34. This document contains information about BSETUP.EXE.  It does not
  35. contain any information concerning Bölz! such as game play.  For more 
  36. information regarding Bölz!, please read BOLZ!.DOC. ##para

  38. We have provided the BSETUP program to make configuration of Bölz! as easy 
  39. and painless as possible.  BSETUP will attempt to autodetect your sound card 
  40. (The Windows Sound System cannot be autodetected), then give you the 
  41. opportunity to correct any mistakes which may occur.  It also allows you
  42. to set music quality, video options and performance options. ##para

  44. BSETUP will first guage your computer's speed.  Then, based on this finding,
  45. will _suggest_ the music quality and video settings that will give the best 
  46. performance possible on your machine.  You may, however, override these 
  47. settings and select whatever level of audio quality you wish, but going 
  48. beyond the suggested maximum (the choices which will be selected for you) 
  49. can cause the game to lock up or cause "skipping" or broken-up audio and/or
  50. bad frame rates and poor action.  Usually, you will want to select whatever 
  51. is given as a default based on system speed to start and try to work your
  52. way up after playing for a while.  ##para

  54. You will need to know the configuration of your sound card if autodetection
  55. fails.  You will need to specifically know the following items: ##para
  56.  
  57. ##tab ##blt Which sound card you have (or compatible with our list) ##hrt
  58. ##tab ##blt Base Port Address, usually given in HEXADECIMAL numbers. ##hrt
  59. ##tab ##blt DMA channel (GUS users emulating Sound Blaster are always DMA 1). ##hrt
  60. ##tab ##blt Interrupt (IRQ) level ##para

  62. BSETUP will attempt to autodetect these settings.  It can, in some rare
  63. cases, make a mistake.  For example, when installing your Sound Blaster(TM)
  64. card from Creative Labs (or compatible), a portion of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file 
  65. was modified to reflect this card's settings.  We rely on that information 
  66. to determine the settings of the card.  If they do not exist (you didn't use 
  67. AUTOEXEC.BAT before you ran BSETUP), then we attempt a 'hardware level' 
  68. detection of the card.  The Windows Sound System or compatibles are the only 
  69. sound cards which cannot be autodected by our routines.  If you have a 
  70. Windows Sound System, please note that you will need to know its I/O Address
  71. (usually port 530), IRQ (Usually 10) and DMA (Usually 1 or 5). ##para

  73. When you run BSETUP, you will be presented with a screen of choices to make
  74. concerning your sound card.  Using the keyboard (arrow keys to move the 
  75. cursor up and down, Tab to move between columns and spacebar to "click" or 
  76. select), you may select any option by "clicking" in the box to its left.  
  77. It's rather intuitive, as you'll see. ##para

  79. When you are satisfied with the information displayed concerning your sound
  80. card, simply click on the tab labeled "Done" at the bottom of the screen to 
  81. move to page two of BSETUP (Video Performance Options).  Here is where you
  82. can turn Parallax Scrolling on and off, turn Color Animation on/off, and
  83. even tell Bölz! to skip the Color VGA Detection. ##para

  85. When you are satisfied with the information displayed on page two, click 
  86. on the "Done" tab.  This causes the file, "BALZ!.INF," to be created in the 
  87. directory BOLZ on drive C:.  This file is REQUIRED to run Bölz!, as it 
  88. contains all of the information required to set up your sound system for use 
  89. with Balz! as well as the video performance options.  Please do not delete 
  90. this file! ##para

  92. The CD-ROM registered version has no other way of saving data except to your
  93. hard drive, and this file is only 52 bytes long (Yes, just 52 bytes.  Less
  94. than one line of text in this document!). ##para

  98. ##text [RUN_BSETUP] Running BSETUP.EXE
  99. BSETUP uses the keyboard for input.  It uses a text-based user interface, 
  100. similar to other DOS setup programs, to allow you to easily enter all 
  101. necessary information in a very visual format. ##para

  103. To run BSETUP, switch to the directory into which you have installed the
  104. Bölz! files.  Then simply type BSETUP and press [ENTER]. ##para
  105.  
  106. Toward the top of the screen, you will see a message box.  If you need help,
  107. keep your eye up here for some suggestions while not pressing any keys.
  108. This is also the "Current Action" display, and it tells you what BSETUP is 
  109. currently working on.   ##para

  111. Before control is passed to you, BSETUP will attempt to autodetect your 
  112. sound card and it will also test your computer's speed by writing some 
  113. graphics to the screen and doing some math similar to what is contained in 
  114. Bölz! ##para

  117. NOTE:    A MATH COPROCESSOR IS OF NO USE TO Bölz!  THIS GAME USES INTEGER-

  124. for your sound system.  You may, by processes outlined above, change these
  125. settings.  Again, click the "Done" tab for page two and set these options
