PITFALL: THE MAYAN ADVENTURE
MSDEMO VERSION 1.0 MAY 3, 1995
This is a PRE-ALPHA version of Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure for Windows 95,
developed for Activision by Kinesoft Development. As this is pre-alpha, you
may find bugs.
***** THIS DEMO MUST BE RUN ON A PENTIUM 90 OR BETTER MACHINE*****
However, the final version will be compatible with a 486/33 processor and
will include the AutoPlay feature.
INSTRUCTIONS: Copy the folder named MSDemo onto the hard drive. Leave
the CD in the drive in order to access the music tracks. The MSDemo folder
contains the following...
BG (directory)
SOUND (directory)
SPRITES (directory)
WAVEMIX *****THIS DIRECTORY CONTAINS WAVEMIX.INI AND WAVEMIX.DLL.
WAVEMIX.INI MUST BE COPIED INTO THE WINDOWS DIRECTORY AND
WAVEMIX.DLL MUST BE COPIED INTO THE WINDOWS\SYSTEM DIRECTORY
ON THE HARD DRIVE (this will be done automatically in the
final version).
Dispdib.dll *****THIS FILE MUST BE COPIED INTO THE WINDOWS\SYSTEM
DIRECTORY IF IT IS NOT ALREADY THERE (this will be done
automatically in the final version). Also, this file
will only be visible in the window if the viewing option
is set such that it shows hidden files.*****

When playing in a window, the demo will not run faster than 60Hz--so it
should not hog the processor on a greater-than 486 machine. In full screen
mode with the SMOOTH FULL SCREEN option enabled, the demo will always try
and do everything in a single frame. This option produces the smoothest game
on a Pentium 90 and upwards. Full screen mode with the SMOOTH FULL SCREEN
option enabled may be unplayable on any machine less than a Pentium 90.
Additionally, the demo may suffer from jerkiness when sound effects are
enabled if running on any machine less than a Pentium 90. This will be
fixed in the final version. Ultimately, the final version of the game will
require a minimum of a 486DX/33 with 8 meg RAM.
Also, if an error message appears stating that you are not running in FAST
256 COLOR mode, switch to this option by going into SETTINGS section of the
DISPLAY function located in CONTROL PANELS. After selecting 256 mode, click
on APPLY which will then reboot your machine. Playing the game in non-256
color mode will result in the game playing at a much slower rate.
This demo features the following options...
FOUR LEVELS Select any of four levels using the LEVELS pull-
down menu.
CD SOUNDTRACK Enable redbook audio tracks using the OPTIONS menu.
This will access music tracks off the CD.
SOUND EFFECTS Enable sampled sound effects using the OPTIONS
menu. It is recommended that you also enable the
CD tracks when enabling the sound effects. Also,
enabling sound effects on a machine less than a
Pentium 90 will cause jerkiness (see above).
GAME PAD Enable use of a Gravis game pad by using the
OPTIONS menu. Remember that a game pad will not
work properly unless it is configured correctly in
Windows 95. NOTE: The game pad will pull to the
left if used when sound effects are enabled.
WINDOW SIZE Select various window sizes by using the WINDOW
menu. Use the SMOOTH FULL SCREEN option only when
running the demo on a Pentium 90 or better (see
above).
HELP FILE Read through a preliminary version of an
all-encompassing help file that will be included
in the final product.
When you die, exit a level or find a bug, a message box will appear. Hit a
key and you will return to the beginning of the level. If you are in full
screen mode and the game appears to lock up, most likely a message box has
appeared "behind" the game. You must then close out the game and return to
the desktop to read the message box. Afterward, you can relaunch the game.
CONTROLS:
A (Whip)
S (Jump/Crawl)
D (Fire)
Space Bar (Select weapon - sling stones, boomerang, smart bomb)
Arrow Keys (Move)
Hold down CTRL and use the arrow keys to cheat to anywhere in a level.
We hope you enjoy this pre-alpha version of Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure
for Windows 95.
