1.1 About File Manager StepUp
------------------------------
File Manager StepUp (or FM StepUp) is a utility that improves File
Manager dramatically. Instead of replacing File Manager, FM StepUp
simply makes it better. When you install FMStepUp, additional
commands are added to the menus of the File Manager, and existing
commands are enhanced.
Featured in the January 1995, WINDOWS Magazine, Superior Shareware
section!
"ChaoSoft accomplishes what Microsoft couldn't ... an excellent
shareware product that enhances the power and usefulness of
Windows' [File Manager] ..."
Columbia Daily Tribune, 10/94
"FM StepUp ... does all manner of clever things. It adds 3D
effects (ala Word 6 or Excel 5) to the dialog boxes, gives you
a command-line history in all sorts of places ... and provides
right-click pop-up menus in a variety of useful places ... FM
StepUp is certainly good enough to try."
Windows User UK, 06/94
"The standard dialog boxes gain a history list of recently used
commands and that attractive 3D look. However...the best thing
about this is the pop-up menus. Right click on a file and a
menu pops up giving you a bunch of options, like viewing the
file, editing it, running it, printing it, and so on ... once
you have started using it you'll never want to give them up!"
Australian PC User, 06/94
Here is the list of features File Manager gets with FM StepUp:
o Enhanced dialog boxes, including history lists, browse
buttons, verify check boxes, etc.
o Commands to easily create, view, edit or print arbitrary
files, not necessarily associated with an application.
o Customizable Execute Menu, that provides an easy way to
access frequently used applications and perform
pre-programmed operations on currently selected files.
o Customizable Quick Menu, instantly accessible with the right
mouse button, contains the most frequently used commands and
keeps track of the execution history of other commands.
o Several special commands are provided to make you more
productive:
1. Total Size, allows you to figure out the size of a
directory, including all subdirectories;
2. Change Date/Time, allows you to change date or time
attributes for a file;
3. Run Screen Saver;
4. Return To DOS; Restart Windows; Reboot System, etc.
o Complete context-sensitive Help is available from all
dialog boxes. The Help file provides a complete user's
guide for FM StepUp.
o FM StepUp is highly customizable. A user can control virtually
every aspect of FM StepUp, from choosing a name for its menu
to specifying which dialog boxes to enhance.
Try it - You won't believe how you were able to work without FM
StepUp.
"The way software should be!"(tm)
1.2. What's new in this version:
----------------------------------
- the ability to add buttons for commands 'New File,' 'View File,'
and 'Edit File' to the File Manager toolbar (native or 'FM
Toolbar,' available from ChaoSoft)
- functionality of the Execute Menu is extended:
- internal DOS commands (like DIR) may now be added to the
Execute Menu;
- the ability to perform a command from Execute Menu for a
number of currently selected files is implemented;
- the 'Print DIR' and 'Print TREE' commands are added to the
default set of the Execute Menu commands;
NOTE: if you have already customized Execute menu, you
may add these commands to it manually. Close File Manager,
open file FMSTEPUP.INI for editing (using Windows Notepad,
for instance), find section [ExecMenu] and add the following
two lines to the list of commands:
Print DI&R=DIR /O:N > PRN
Print &TREE=TREE /A > PRN
Save the file and run File Manager.
- the capacity of the Execute Menu is increased: it can now
hold up to 30 commands;
- additional special character combinations to be recognized in a
command line template are introduced:
.! - represents an extension of a file, including a dot;
,! - represents an extension of a file, without the dot;
- DOS 'Verify on/off' mode is now restored to its original state
after closing File Manager;
- the 'Total Size' command can now be used to calculate total
size of multiple directories, simultaneously highlighted in the
Directory window;
- functionality of the 'Change Date/Time' command is improved: it
can now be interrupted before the end of processing.
- confirmation to reset Quick Menu and Execute Menu, or to delete
an item from Execute Menu is now asked;
- the 'Delete' dialog box is NO LONGER updated by FM StepUp (I'm
tired of answering the question, "What's the history list for?"
:-);
- FM StepUp no longer provides a FULL set of [Restrictions] for
File Manager. A separate utility, 'FM Guard,' is specifically
designed to perform this task and is available from ChaoSoft.
For further details, please see the note below.
- FM Stepup may now be used with File Manager, even if the
WINFILE.INI file is renamed.
Bugs fixed:
"Undefined function AllocPtr in module CSL*.DLL"
"History list for the 'By File Type' dialog box is not updated
correctly";
"The 'StepUp' submenu occasionally disappears after modifying
Execute menu or Quick Menu";
"If the 'View/Edit File' command is executing for a file in the
root directory, the current DOS directory remains one of the
previously selected subdirectories."
Ver. 2.6 :
- Minor improvements made: you can now add separators to Quick
Menu and Execute Menu; Help window has no fixed size;
new [Restrictions] entries added; etc.
- Documentation updated.
Ver.2.5 :
- New SETUP utility - you can activate/deactivate FM StepUp
whenever you wish; you can quickly look at the software
without actually installing it onto hard or network disk; etc.
- New special command added: Run DOS Program, allowing you to
easily exit Windows, run a specified DOS program, and then
restart Windows. (You can now run DOOM 'from' Windows!)
- Minor improvements: Centered Alignment for the Quick Menu can
be turned on/off; the 'About' screen on start up can be turned
off for registered copies; etc.
- some changes to documentation made and
- bugs fixed:
"View File and Edit File menu items are grayed unpredictably";
"Empty disk lists in Copy Disk dialog box for systems with one
floppy drive";
"GPF when changing menu name StepUp";
"Wrong behavior of the Cancel button in the Make System Disk
dialog box for systems with only one floppy drive";
"GPF when attempting to Delete an empty directory";
"Improper saving of the FM StepUp settings when Windows shuts
down";
"Improper Printing of large files or a large number of files";
SPECIAL NOTE for Windows for Workgroups users: if you had given
up on FM StepUp ver.1.x because of the conflict between FM StepUp
and toolbar, please take a look at the current version. That
bug has been fixed and they (FM StepUp and toolbar) 'enjoy' each
other now.
1.3 How to use the documentation
--------------------------------
Complete information about FM StepUp, including the installation
procedure, how to get updates, how to register your copy,
troubleshooting hints, answers to frequently asked questions,
etc., is available in Windows Help format, see file FMSTEPUP.HLP.
If you've already installed FM StepUp, access the information by
choosing StepUp | Help from the menu in File Manager.
Or, double click the 'FM StepUp Help' icon in the FMStepUp group
created in Program Manager after automatic installation.
Or, choose command 'Run' from Program Manager or File Manager main
menu, and enter the full name (including complete path) of the
FMSTEPUP.HLP file. For example, if you installed the FM StepUp
files into directory C:\TEMP on your hard disk, enter the following
string in the 'Run' dialog box:
C:\TEMP\FMSTEPUP.HLP
and click 'OK' button.
Yet another way to view the file is to open the directory window
with the File Manager and double click filename FMSTEPUP.HLP with
the mouse.
1.4. This is Shareware: TRY BEFORE YOU BUY!
--------------------------------------------
This is NOT freeware or public domain software. This is SHAREWARE,
i.e., copyrighted software which you can "try before you buy".
You may try the program for an evaluation period of up to 14
days. After that time, you are required to purchase the software
through registration or else discontinue its use. (For details,
please see the license agreement in the VENDINFO.DIZ file.)
When you pay for the shareware you like, you're voting with your
pocketbook for the future of the computer industry - high quality
software which you can try before you buy. You payment will
encourage us to bring you more of the same kinds of products.
What's the difference between Unregistered and Registered versions?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
There is NO difference between the unregistered and registered
versions of this software. Actually, it's the same program: you
may convert an unregistered copy to a registered copy by entering
a registration code. Similarly, a registered copy of the program
may be 'unregistered' by deleting the registration code or by just
copying the program to another machine.
Unregistered copies of our products are 100% fully functional. We
make them this way so you can have a real look at them to decide
whether or not they fit your needs. Please understand that if you
fail to register, and continue to use 'FM StepUp' beyond the eval-
uation period without paying for it, don't expect the program to
maintain its original functionality: some (non-essential) features
may become disabled. If you need more time to decide whether you
want to keep the program, we'll give you an opportunity to extend
the evaluation period. However, we cannot afford to let you use
all of the features of the program without compensation. In
addition, it is unfair to our customers who do register to use the
program. We appreciate your understanding of this policy.
WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU REGISTER File Manager StepUp?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
//
// 2. INSTALLING File Manager StepUp
//
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Unlike most other Windows applications, FM StepUp is not a stand-
alone program; there is no special executable file you would run
to start FM StepUp. To use the program, all you need is to
properly install it and, every time your run File Manager, FM
StepUp will run automatically.
2.1. Using Setup utility
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FM StepUp comes with a convenient and flexible SETUP utility. Use
SETUP when you want to temporarily activate/deactivate the
software or install it onto your hard disk or network drive for
permanent use.
2.1.1. HOW TO QUICKLY TRY OUT THE SOFTWARE
------------------------------------------
If you obtained FM StepUp on a diskette or CD-ROM and want to take
a look at the utility without installing it onto your hard disk,
run SETUP.EXE from the FMSTEPUP directory on the diskette or
CD-ROM and choose the 'Activate' button when prompted.
- to run SETUP.EXE, choose File | Run from main menu of Program
Manager or File Manager and type into the 'Run' dialog box:
A:\FMSTEPUP\SETUP.EXE
(assuming that the diskette is inserted into the 'A' floppy
drive)
After that, run File Manager. You should see a new entry in the
main menu, 'StepUp' (Note: If there is no such entry, FM StepUp
has not been activated; see information below for possible
reasons.) Of course, be sure that the diskette or CD with FM
StepUp is available during the loading of the File Manager!
Try this:
- place the mouse cursor in a File Manager window and click with
the right button. The Quick Menu should pop up with a number of
choices; try some of them.
- open 'StepUp' submenu and choose 'Special'; try commands from it;
- open standard dialog boxes of the File Manager: e.g., Run, Copy,
Move, etc. Don't they look better with 3-D effects? Are the
history lists next to the editable fields handy?
- choose StepUp | Preferences: what do you want to customize? Try
buttons: Dialogs; Quick Menu; Execute Menu; try to change the
menu name 'StepUp' to something else.
Now, if you see that FM StepUp is not what you need, run SETUP.EXE
and choose the 'Deactivate' button. In addition, to completely
clean your system, you should delete the FMSTEPUP.INI file from
your WINDOWS directory.
On the other hand, if you want to give the program a longer trial
and wish to install it onto your hard disk or network drive,
choose the 'Install' button when SETUP.EXE prompts you. Please see
the next section for more information.
2.1.2. Installing on a hard disk or network drive
-------------------------------------------------
If you've already copied all the files from the FM StepUp
package onto your hard disk (for instance, you have extracted the
files from an archive), run SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Activate'
button.
If you don't have the FM StepUp files on the hard disk, choose
'Install' instead. Then enter the path to the directory where
you want FM StepUp to be installed. In this case, SETUP.EXE will
copy all the files to the new location and then activate them.
In addition, you'll be prompted to create a separate program group
for FM StepUp. It isn't essential to have such a group, but it may
be convenient. In any case, it's your decision!
2.1.3. Uninstalling FM StepUp
-----------------------------
To prevent File Manager from loading and using FM StepUp, run
SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Deactivate' button. If you decide to
start using FM StepUp later on, run SETUP.EXE and choose
'Activate'.
Otherwise, to completely remove FM StepUp from your system,
deactivate it with the SETUP.EXE utility (see above) and remove
all the files from the directory on your hard disk or network
drive where you have installed FM StepUp. In addition, erase file
FMSTEPUP.INI from your WINDOWS directory and, if you created it
during installation, delete the 'FMStepUp' program group from the
Program Manager.
2.2. Registering your copy of FM StepUp
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sometimes, FM StepUp displays a registration reminder, and the
'About FM StepUp' screen reads 'Unregistered copy.' If you have
registered FM StepUp and obtained your personal Registration Code
from us, you may use it to remove the registration reminder from
the screen and enter your name in the 'About FM StepUp' screen.
Choose 'Register' from the StepUp menu of File Manager and, when
the dialog box pops up, enter your name (exactly as it appears in
your Registration Acknowledgment) and the Registration Code.
Be sure to enter your name EXACTLY as it's written in the
Registration Acknowledgment, including all letters in proper case
(upper or lower), spaces, punctuation, etc. If you wish your name
to be spelled differently, please let us know and we'll assign you
a new registration number.
2.3. Manual installation/deinstallation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If the automatic installation fails for any reason, you may install
FM StepUp manually:
1. Create a directory for FM StepUp on your hard disk, say
C:\FMSTEPUP, and copy all the files from the FM StepUp
installation disk into that directory. If you obtained the FM
StepUp files compressed in an archive, extract all the files
from it.
2. Close File Manager.
3. Open file WINFILE.INI for editing (using Notepad or any other
ASCII text editor). This file is located in the WINDOWS
directory on your hard disk (or the directory you specified
when installing Windows). Please note: The file you need is
WINFILE.INI, not the WIN.INI file!
Find the section [AddOns] in this file and enter the following
line right after the string [AddOns]:
FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
(or specify the directory you copied FM StepUp's files into,
if other than FMSTEPUP).
The resulting portion of the WINFILE.INI should look like
this:
...
[AddOns]
FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
...
(... means other lines of the file). Save the file.
5. Run File Manager.
If the installation has been completed successfully, you should
see a new menu item, 'StepUp,' among the other items in the main
menu of the File Manager. If you don't see the 'StepUp' entry in
the main menu of File Manager, an error has occurred. Please
verify that you have done all the steps above and, in particular,
you specified the correct path in the [AddOns] section of the
WINFILE.INI file. Also, make sure that the files have not been
corrupted when they were copied onto your hard disk. (Each file
should be the same size as each file on the installation diskette)
To manually uninstall FM StepUp:
1. Close File Manager and remove the line 'FM StepUp=...' from the
WINFILE.INI file (using Notepad, for example). After that,
when you restart File Manager, FM StepUp will not be loaded. If
you decide later to start using FM StepUp again, enter the line
'FMStepUp=...' specifying the complete DOS path to FMSTEPUP.DLL
file, in the [AddOn] section of the WINFILE.INI file.
The following steps should be completed only if you wish to
remove FM StepUp from your system permanently:
2. Delete all the files from the directory on your hard disk where
you installed FM StepUp;
3. Delete file FMSTEPUP.INI from the WINDOWS directory;
4. Delete program group 'FMStepUp' in the Program manager window,
if there is one.
We hope you'll change your mind!
2.3. A note about [Restrictions] for File Manager
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you're a System Administrator, you may find that FM StepUp
gives too much power to Windows users. That's why we made FM
StepUp able to restrict itself. With FM StepUp, you may also
restrict a user's access to some of the features of the File
Manager in the same way as Program Manager.
NOTE: FM StepUp is not intended to provide a comprehensive set
of [Restrictions] for File Manager. A separate utility, 'FM
Guard,' specifically designed for this purpose, is available
from ChaoSoft. 'FM Guard' allows you to disable any command in
File Manager, limit user access to any drive of your choice,
prevent closing of File Manager, etc. For more information
about 'FM Guard,' please contact us at the address at the end
of this file.
To restrict FM StepUp, create a file, 'FMSTEPUP.SYS' in the
WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, insert a [Restrictions] section in the
file and add desired Boolean entries listed below to it.
Standard rules for specifying BOOLEAN entries of the WIN.INI
and SYSTEM.INI files apply here: 1/ON/TRUE/YES may be used
interchangeably to turn the mode on; 0/OFF/FALSE/NO - to
turn it off.
Note: the settings that affect standard dialog boxes (By
File Type, Properties, Run, etc.) of File Manager require
corresponding dialog boxes to be enabled through the
'Preferences | Dialogs' command.
NoShowHiddenSysFiles=BOOLEAN
disables the Show Hidden/System Files check box in the By File
Type dialog box so that users will be unable to see any files
you don't want them to;
NoChangeFileAttrib=BOOLEAN
disables the Attributes group of the Properties dialog box and
prevents users from changing attributes of files, so that all
the files made hidden by you will remain hidden;
NoChangeFileDateTime=BOOLEAN
disables OK button in the Change Date/Time dialog and prevents
users from modifying these file attributes;
NoUninstallStepUp=BOOLEAN
prevents users from uninstalling FM StepUp, i.e. if a user
modifies the WINFILE.INI and removes the 'FM StepUp=' entry, this
entry will be added again by FM StepUp automatically when
exiting File Manager and FM StepUp will be loaded during the
next run of File Manager.
NoSaveStepUpSettings=BOOLEAN
prevents users from saving the current settings of FM StepUp
on exit or on choosing File | Exit while the holding SHIFT key
down (undocumented 'Save Settings Now' command);
NoCustomizeExecMenu=BOOLEAN
prevents users from customizing the Execute Menu of FM StepUp;
NoDialogs=BOOLEAN
prevents users from using the Preferences | Dialogs command;
NoCustomizeQuickMenu=BOOLEAN
prevents users from customizing the Quick Menu of FM StepUp;
NoChangeViewerEditor=BOOLEAN
prevents users from changing the default viewer and editor
through the Preferences dialog box (so they won't be able to
run undesirable programs this way!);
NoRunDOSprog=BOOLEAN
disables 'OK' button in the Run DOS Program dialog box and
prevents users from using this command.
NoExitWindows=BOOLEAN
prevents users from using commands Return To DOS, Restart
Windows, and Reboot System from StepUp|Special menu. This
does not prevent, though, from exiting Windows by other means,
via closing Program Manager, for instance.
NoRunScreenSaver=BOOLEAN
disables command StepUp | Special | Run Screen Saver.
