  80. 1.1  About File Manager StepUp
  81. ------------------------------

  83. File Manager StepUp (or FM StepUp) is a utility that improves File
  84. Manager dramatically.  Instead of replacing File Manager, FM StepUp
  85. simply makes it better.  When you install FMStepUp, additional
  86. commands are added to the menus of the File Manager, and existing
  87. commands are enhanced.

  160. -  the ability to add buttons for commands 'New File,' 'View File,'
  161.    and 'Edit File' to the File Manager toolbar (native or 'FM
  162.    Toolbar,' available from ChaoSoft)

  164. -  functionality of the Execute Menu is extended:

  166.    -  internal DOS commands (like DIR) may now be added to the
  167.       Execute Menu;

  169.    -  the ability to perform a command from Execute Menu for a

  275. bug has been fixed and they (FM StepUp and toolbar) 'enjoy' each
  276. other now.

  278. 1.3 How to use the documentation
  279. --------------------------------

  281. Complete information about FM StepUp, including the installation
  282. procedure, how to get updates, how to register your copy,
  283. troubleshooting hints, answers to frequently asked questions,
  284. etc., is available in Windows Help format, see file FMSTEPUP.HLP.
  285.  
  286. If you've already installed FM StepUp, access the information by
  287. choosing StepUp | Help from the menu in File Manager.
  288.  
  289. Or, double click the 'FM StepUp Help' icon in the FMStepUp group
  290. created in Program Manager after automatic installation.
  291.  
  292. Or, choose command 'Run' from Program Manager or File Manager main
  293. menu, and enter the full name (including complete path) of the
  294. FMSTEPUP.HLP file.  For example, if you installed the FM StepUp
  295. files into directory C:\TEMP on your hard disk, enter the following
  296. string in the 'Run' dialog box:

  298.         C:\TEMP\FMSTEPUP.HLP

  300. and click 'OK' button.
  301.  
  302. Yet another way to view the file is to open the directory window
  303. with the File Manager and double click filename FMSTEPUP.HLP with
  304. the mouse.

  306. 1.4.  This is Shareware:  TRY BEFORE YOU BUY!

  309. This is NOT freeware or public domain software.  This is SHAREWARE,
  310. i.e., copyrighted software which you can "try before you buy".

  322. What's the difference between Unregistered and Registered versions?
  323. -------------------------------------------------------------------

  325. There is NO difference between the unregistered and registered
  326. versions of this software.  Actually, it's the same program:  you
  327. may convert an unregistered copy to a registered copy by entering
  328. a registration code.  Similarly, a registered copy of the program
  329. may be 'unregistered' by deleting the registration code or by just
  330. copying the program to another machine.

  332. Unregistered copies of our products are 100% fully functional.  We
  333. make them this way so you can have a real look at them to decide
  334. whether or not they fit your needs.  Please understand that if you
  335. fail to register, and continue to use 'FM StepUp' beyond the eval-
  336. uation period without paying for it, don't expect the program to 
  337. maintain its original functionality:  some (non-essential) features
  338. may become disabled.  If you need more time to decide whether you

  367. REGISTERING FM StepUp
  368. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  369. You may register your copy of FM StepUp with a check or Eurocheck,
  370. money order, etc.

  378. To register, please choose 'Register...' from the 'StepUp'
  379. submenu of File Manager and follow instructions.  Alternatively,
  380. you may run REGISTER.EXE, supplied with the package, to do the same
  381. thing.  This file will lead you step-by-step through the registra-
  382. tion process and print out an order form for you!

  384. To register under a site license arrangement, please use the order
  385. form in the REGISTER.TXT file.  This file also contains an order
  386. form for a disk containing the latest version of the program.

  407. Unlike most other Windows applications, FM StepUp is not a stand-
  408. alone program; there is no special executable file you would run
  409. to start FM StepUp.  To use the program, all you need is to
  410. properly install it and, every time your run File Manager, FM
  411. StepUp will run automatically.
  412.  
  413. 2.1. Using Setup utility
  414. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  415. FM StepUp comes with a convenient and flexible SETUP utility.  Use 
  416. SETUP when you want to temporarily activate/deactivate the 
  417. software or install it onto your hard disk or network drive for 
  418. permanent use.  
  419.  
  420. 2.1.1. HOW TO QUICKLY TRY OUT THE SOFTWARE
  421. ------------------------------------------
  422.  
  423. If you obtained FM StepUp on a diskette or CD-ROM and want to take 
  424. a look at the utility without installing it onto your hard disk, 
  425. run SETUP.EXE from the FMSTEPUP directory on the diskette or 
  426. CD-ROM and choose the 'Activate' button when prompted.  
  427.  
  428.   - to run SETUP.EXE, choose File | Run from main menu of Program 
  429.     Manager or File Manager and type into the 'Run' dialog box:  
  430.  
  431.         A:\FMSTEPUP\SETUP.EXE
  432.  
  433.     (assuming that the diskette is inserted into the 'A' floppy 
  434.     drive) 
  435.  
  436. After that, run File Manager.  You should see a new entry in the 
  437. main menu, 'StepUp' (Note:  If there is no such entry, FM StepUp 
  438. has not been activated; see information below for possible
  439. reasons.)  Of course, be sure that the diskette or CD with FM 
  440. StepUp is available during the loading of the File Manager!
  441.  
  442. Try this:
  443.  
  444. - place the mouse cursor in a File Manager window and click with 
  445.   the right button.  The Quick Menu should pop up with a number of 
  446.   choices; try some of them.  
  447.  
  448. - open 'StepUp' submenu and choose 'Special'; try commands from it;
  449.  
  450. - open standard dialog boxes of the File Manager: e.g., Run, Copy, 
  451.   Move,  etc.  Don't they look better with 3-D effects?  Are the 
  452.   history lists next to the editable fields handy?
  453.  
  454. - choose StepUp | Preferences: what do you want to customize?  Try 
  455.   buttons: Dialogs; Quick Menu; Execute Menu; try to change the 
  456.   menu name 'StepUp' to something else.  
  457.  
  458. Now, if you see that FM StepUp is not what you need, run SETUP.EXE 
  459. and choose the 'Deactivate' button.  In addition, to completely 
  460. clean your system, you should delete the FMSTEPUP.INI file from 
  461. your WINDOWS directory.
  462.  
  463. On the other hand, if you want to give the program a longer trial 
  464. and wish to install it onto your hard disk or network drive, 
  465. choose the 'Install' button when SETUP.EXE prompts you.  Please see
  466. the next section for more information.
  467.  
  468. 2.1.2. Installing on a hard disk or network drive
  469. -------------------------------------------------
  470.  
  471. If you've already copied all the files from the FM StepUp 
  472. package onto your hard disk (for instance, you have extracted the 
  473. files from an archive), run SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Activate' 
  474. button.  
  475.  
  476. If you don't have the FM StepUp files on the hard disk, choose 
  477. 'Install' instead.  Then enter the path to the directory where 
  478. you want FM StepUp to be installed.  In this case, SETUP.EXE will
  479. copy all the files to the new location and then activate them.
  480. In addition, you'll be prompted to create a separate program group 
  481. for FM StepUp.  It isn't essential to have such a group, but it may
  482. be convenient.  In any case, it's your decision!
  483.  
  484. 2.1.3. Uninstalling FM StepUp
  485. -----------------------------
  486.  
  487. To prevent File Manager from loading and using FM StepUp, run 
  488. SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Deactivate' button. If you decide to 
  489. start using FM StepUp later on, run SETUP.EXE and choose 
  490. 'Activate'. 
  491.  
  492. Otherwise, to completely remove FM StepUp from your system, 
  493. deactivate it with the SETUP.EXE utility (see above) and remove 
  494. all the files from the directory on your hard disk or network 
  495. drive where you have installed FM StepUp.  In addition, erase file 
  496. FMSTEPUP.INI from your WINDOWS directory and, if you created it
  497. during installation, delete the 'FMStepUp' program group from the
  498. Program Manager.
  499.  
  500. 2.2. Registering your copy of FM StepUp
  501. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  502. Sometimes, FM StepUp displays a registration reminder, and the 
  503. 'About FM StepUp' screen reads 'Unregistered copy.'  If you have 
  504. registered FM StepUp and obtained your personal Registration Code 
  505. from us, you may use it to remove the registration reminder from 
  506. the screen and enter your name in the 'About FM StepUp' screen.  
  507. Choose 'Register' from the StepUp menu of File Manager and, when 
  508. the dialog box pops up, enter your name (exactly as it appears in 
  509. your Registration Acknowledgment) and the Registration Code.  
  510.  
  511. Be sure to enter your name EXACTLY as it's written in the 
  512. Registration Acknowledgment, including all letters in proper case 
  513. (upper or lower), spaces, punctuation, etc.  If you wish your name 
  514. to be spelled differently, please let us know and we'll assign you
  515. a new registration number.
  516.  
  517. 2.3. Manual installation/deinstallation
  518. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  519. If the automatic installation fails for any reason, you may install
  520. FM StepUp manually:
  521.  
  522. 1.  Create a directory for FM StepUp on your hard disk, say
  523.     C:\FMSTEPUP, and copy all the files from the FM StepUp
  524.     installation disk into that directory.  If you obtained the FM
  525.     StepUp files compressed in an archive, extract all the files
  526.     from it.
  527.  
  528. 2.  Close File Manager.
  529.  
  530. 3.  Open file WINFILE.INI for editing (using Notepad or any other
  531.     ASCII text editor).  This file is located in the WINDOWS 
  532.     directory on your hard disk (or the directory you specified 
  533.     when installing Windows).  Please note:  The file you need is 
  534.     WINFILE.INI, not the WIN.INI file!
  535.  
  536.     Find the section [AddOns] in this file and enter the following 
  537.     line right after the string [AddOns]:
  538.  
  539.         FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
  540.  
  541.     (or specify the directory you copied FM StepUp's files into, 
  542.     if other than FMSTEPUP).
  543.  
  544.     The resulting portion of the WINFILE.INI should look like 
  545.     this:
  546.  
  547.         ...
  548.         [AddOns]
  549.         FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
  550.         ...
  551.  
  552.     (... means other lines of the file).  Save the file.  
  553.  
  554. 5.  Run File Manager.
  555.  
  556. If the installation has been completed successfully, you should 
  557. see a new menu item, 'StepUp,' among the other items in the main 
  558. menu of the File Manager.  If you don't see the 'StepUp' entry in 
  559. the main menu of File Manager, an error has occurred.  Please 
  560. verify that you have done all the steps above and, in particular,
  561. you specified the correct path in the [AddOns] section of the 
  562. WINFILE.INI file.  Also, make sure that the files have not been 
  563. corrupted when they were copied onto your hard disk.  (Each file 
  564. should be the same size as each file on the installation diskette)
  565.  
  566. To manually uninstall FM StepUp:
  567.  
  568. 1.  Close File Manager and remove the line 'FM StepUp=...' from the
  569.     WINFILE.INI file (using Notepad, for example).  After that,
  570.     when you restart File Manager, FM StepUp will not be loaded. If
  571.     you decide later to start using FM StepUp again, enter the line

  590. If you're a System Administrator, you may find that FM StepUp 
  591. gives too much power to Windows users.  That's why we made FM 
  592. StepUp able to restrict itself.  With FM StepUp, you may also 
  593. restrict a user's access to some of the features of the File 
  594. Manager in the same way as Program Manager.  
  595.  
  596.   NOTE:  FM StepUp is not intended to provide a comprehensive set 
  597.   of [Restrictions] for File Manager.  A separate utility, 'FM 
  598.   Guard,' specifically designed for this purpose, is available 
  599.   from ChaoSoft.  'FM Guard' allows you to disable any command in 
  600.   File Manager, limit user access to any drive of your choice, 
  601.   prevent closing of File Manager, etc.  For more information 
  602.   about 'FM Guard,' please contact us at the address at the end 
  603.   of this file.

  605. To restrict FM StepUp, create a file, 'FMSTEPUP.SYS' in the 
  606. WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, insert a [Restrictions] section in the 
  607. file and add desired Boolean entries listed below to it.

  609.       Standard rules for specifying BOOLEAN entries of the WIN.INI
  610.       and SYSTEM.INI files apply here:  1/ON/TRUE/YES may be used 
  611.       interchangeably to turn the mode on; 0/OFF/FALSE/NO - to

  614.       Note: the settings that affect standard dialog boxes (By 
  615.       File Type, Properties, Run, etc.) of File Manager require 
  616.       corresponding dialog boxes to be enabled through the 
  617.       'Preferences | Dialogs' command.

  619. NoShowHiddenSysFiles=BOOLEAN
  620.   disables the Show Hidden/System Files check box in the By File 
  621.   Type dialog box so that users will be unable to see any files 
  622.   you don't want them to;

  624. NoChangeFileAttrib=BOOLEAN  
  625.   disables the Attributes group of the Properties dialog box and 
  626.   prevents users from changing attributes of files, so that all 
  627.   the files made hidden by you will remain hidden;

  630.   disables OK button in the Change Date/Time dialog and prevents 
  631.   users from modifying these file attributes;

  633. NoUninstallStepUp=BOOLEAN  
  634.   prevents users from uninstalling FM StepUp, i.e. if a user 
  635.   modifies the WINFILE.INI and removes the 'FM StepUp=' entry, this
  636.   entry will be added again by FM StepUp automatically when 
  637.   exiting File Manager and FM StepUp will be loaded during the 
  638.   next run of File Manager.
