2 CONT Church of England.  These beliefs soon brought him into conflict

2 CONT Parliament and ultimately led to civil war.  He dismissed Parliament

2 CONT governed without it for 11 years.  During this time forced loans,
 poundage,
2 CONT tonnage, ship money and other extraordinary financial measures

 sanctioned
2 CONT to meet governmental expenses.  Parliament appointed a court to
try the
 king,
2 CONT but Charles refused to recognize the authority of the court.  On
January
 27,
2 CONT 1649, he was sentenced to death as a tyrant, murderer and enemy
of the
 nation.
2 CONT Scotland protested, the royal family entreated and France and the
 Netherlands
2 CONT interceded, in vain.  He  was beheaded outside Whithall Palace
in London.
2 CONT Subsequently Oliver Cromwell became chairman of the council of
state, a

1 NOTE Frederick William's greatest accomplishment was in the internal

2 CONT He was particularly proud of the Potsdam Guard, composed of exceptional

2 CONT men hired, and sometime kidnapped, from all parts of Europe.  Under

2 CONT supervision the number of soldiers in the army was increased from
about
 38,000
2 CONT to some 83,500 and Prussia became the third ranking military power
in
 Europe.

in 1558
2 CONT Elizabeth became Queen, beginning one of the greatest reigns in

2 CONT history. From the beginning of her reign, Elizabeth's marital status

2 CONT political concern because there was no English heir to the throne.
 Parliament
2 CONT insistently petitioned her to marry, but she replied with the statement

2 CONT she intended to live and die a virgin.  She became known as the
Virgin
 Queen.
2 CONT Her statement did not prevent her from toying constantly with the

2 CONT marriage.  She was besieged by royal suitors, each of whom she
favored
 when it
2 CONT was in her political interest to do so.  Her affections, however,
were
 bestowed
2 CONT on a succession of favorites, notably Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of
 Leicester, Sir

1 NOTE Contrary to diagnoses of the period, it is highly likely the Edward
