- ===============================================
- 1. Changing a Server Name After Installation
- ===============================================
-
- During installation, ModemShare assigns each computer that acts as a
- server the default server name MSHARE. If you have more than one
- ModemShare server on your network, you need to give each server a
- unique name. When more than one server has the same name, such as the
- default name MSHARE, you won't be able to accurately monitor server
- activity with Remote Server Monitor.
-
- Follow the steps below to give each server a unique name:
-
- Under Windows 95:
-
- 1. At the ModemShare server, click Start, Programs, INSYNC
- ModemShare, Parameter Editor.
- 2. Click Server parameters.
- 3. In the Other Settings field, click in the Server Name box
- and type in a new server name.
- 4. Click OK.
- 5. Click File, then click Save parameters and exit.
- 6. Restart your computer.
-
-
- Under Windows v3.x and DOS:
-
-
- 1. Open the Parameter Editor on the ModemShare server. In
- Windows v3.x, double-click the Parameter Editor icon in the
- ModemShare program group. In DOS, change to the
- MSHARE directory and type PAREDIT <Enter>. The DOS-based
- Parameter Editor main screen appears.
- 2. Press Enter to clear the screen, then select Station Type by
- pressing Enter again.
- 3. Press Enter to select Server. The full path name for the
- SERVER.CON file appears. Press Enter to accept this default
- unless you've created another parameter file for this server.
- 4. The Parameter Set Selection screen appears. Press Enter to
- select the default set "1" unless you've created another
- parameter set. The Server Parameters Options screen appears.
- 5. Use your down arrow key to scroll down to Server Name, and
- press Enter.
-
- NOTE: To conform with all communications interfaces, don't use a server
- name longer than 8 characters. Don't use spaces or other invalid
- characters such as underscores or question marks.
-
- 6. Type in a new server name and press Enter.
- 7. Select File, then press Enter. Press Enter again to save your
- parameter set. Press Q to quit.
- 8. Restart the ModemShare server.
-
-
-
-
- ===============================
- 2. Checking Your Modem Settings
- ===============================
-
- When you install ModemShare on a computer that will share its modem (the
- ModemShare server), the program automatically sets a standard IRQ
- (Interrupt Request)and I/O (Input/Output) Base address for the COM port
- the modem is attached to. For example, if the modem is on COM 2,
- ModemShare will set the IRQ to 3 and the I/O Base address to 2F8.
- For most modems these default settings will work fine.
-
- However, if the modem requires special IRQ or I/O settings, you need
- to change these default settings by following the steps below on the
- ModemShare server:
-
- Under Windows 95:
-
- 1. At the ModemShare server, click Start, Programs, INSYNC
- ModemShare, Parameter Editor.
- 2. Click Server parameters.
- 3. Click Line Definitions. Click the line(s) serviced by the
- modem that needs its settings changed.
- 4. Click in the Port address box and type in the correct I/O
- Base address.
- 5. Use the Interrupt drop-down list box to select the correct
- IRQ.
- 6. Click OK, Done and OK.
- 7. Click File, then Save parameters and exit.
- 8. Restart the ModemShare server.
-
- Under Windows v3.x and DOS:
-
- 5. Use your arrow keys to scroll down to Lines, then press Enter.
- The Line Selection screen appears. Select the line(s) serviced
- by the modem that needs its settings changed.
- 6. In the Line Values screen, use your arrow key to select Port
- Address then press Enter. Type the correct I/O address and
- press Enter.
- 7. Select Interrupt and press Enter. Type in an IRQ value and
- press Enter.
- 8. Select Done and press Enter to return to the Server Parameters
- screen.
- 9. Select File, then press Enter. Press Enter again to save your
- parameter set. Press Q to quit.
- 10. Restart the ModemShare server.
-
-
-
-
- =================================
- 3. Solving Common Startup Errors
- =================================
-
- The following sections explain what to do when you have trouble
- using ModemShare immediately after installation.
-
-
- A. You might see the following error messages when starting up or
- restarting a ModemShare server: "ModemShare not loaded, server parameter
- error" (under Windows 95) or "XXX Interface Initializing failed.
- Connection Request" (under Windows v3.x and DOS, where XXX could be
- either IPX/SPX or NetBIOS).
-
- These messages simply indicate that more ports or lines have been
- defined for the ModemShare server than your license allows. For example,
- if you have a two-port license and define three lines on the server, you'll
- receive one of these messages when you start or restart the server.
-
- There are two ways to correct this problem: either buy an upgrade or add-on
- license that allows you to define the number of lines you need, or delete
- the excess lines on the ModemShare server.
-
- For information about an upgrade or add-on license, call the Artisoft Sales
- Consultation Center at 1 (800) 846-9726. To delete excess lines, follow the
- instructions below.
-
- First check your INSYNC ModemShare box to determine the number of lines
- (ports) that are supported by your license. Then follow these steps to delete
- lines from a ModemShare server:
-
- Under Windows 95:
-
- 1. At the ModemShare server, click Start, Programs, INSYNC
- ModemShare, Parameter Editor.
- 2. Click Server parameters.
- 3. Click Line Definitions. Click a line to delete. The Line Detail
- window appears.
- 4. Click Delete Line.
- 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the number of lines on the server
- matches the number of ports for your license.
- 6. Click Done, then OK.
- 7. Click File, then Save parameters and exit.
- 8. Restart the ModemShare server.
-
- Under Windows v3.x and DOS:
-
Press Enter to accept this default,
- unless you've created another parameter file for this server.
- 4. The Parameter Set Selection screen appears. Press Enter to
- select the default set "1," unless you've created another
- parameter set. The Server Parameters Options screen appears.
- 5. Use your arrow keys to scroll down to Lines, then press Enter.
- 6. Select a line to delete, then press F3 to delete it.
- 7. Press Y to confirm the deletion.
- 8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until the number of lines on the server
- matches the number of ports for your license.
- 9. Select File, then press Enter. Press Enter again to save your
- parameter set. Press Q to quit.
- 10. Restart the ModemShare server.
-
-
-
- B. If you're running Windows 95 and using the NetBIOS or NetBEUI network
- protocol, you might see the error message, "Server is busy or
- unavailable." To correct this problem, you need to set a default
- network protocol so that ModemShare will transmit data packets using
- this protocol under Windows 95.
-
- Go to each ModemShare server and client that's running Windows 95 and
- follow these steps:
-
- 1. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel.
- 2. Double-click the Network icon. You'll see a list of network
- items such as adapters and protocols.
- 3. If you're running LANtastic, click Artisoft LANtastic NetBIOS.
- If you're running the Microsoft(R) networking system, click
- NetBEUI.
- 4. Click Properties, then click the Advanced tab.
- 5. Make sure the box "Set this protocol to be the default protocol"
- is checked.
- 6. Click OK.
- 7. Restart each ModemShare computer.
-
-
-
- C. If you're running LANtastic v5.x or 6.x on any of your ModemShare
- servers or clients, and some servers don't appear to be available when
- you run Monitor, Remote Server Monitor or Port Status & Setup, you may
- have exceeded the multicast address table limit of your adapter driver.
-
- Follow the steps below to turn off multicast addressing on each
- LANtastic v5.x and v6.x computer on your network.
-
-
- 1. Use a text editor such as DOS EDIT to open your
- STARNET.CFG, which is located in your LANTASTI directory.
- 2. Under the AILANBIO section, add the line:
-
- NO_MULTICAST
-
- 3. Save your changes and exit the text editor.
- 4. Restart the computer.
-
-
-
- ================================================

- IMPORTANT: You must restart your computer after uninstalling ModemShare
- for all components to be removed.
-
-
-
-
-
- =============================================================
- 6. Understanding the Windows 95 Device Manager and ModemShare
- =============================================================
-
- If you use Windows 95's Device Manager on a Plug and Play computer
- after installing ModemShare, you might notice circled exclamation
- points next to Direct memory access controller and System timer under
- System devices. Windows 95 will give you a message that there
- are resource conflicts with these two devices.
-
- There aren't any resource conflicts. Windows 95 manages ModemShare's
- virtual COM ports as though they were actual, physical devices. Ignore
- these exclamation points and conflict messages.
-
-
-
- ===================================================================
- 7. Windows 95 ModemShare Clients: Using Two Modems on One DOS-based
- ModemShare Server
- ===================================================================
-
- A Windows 95 ModemShare client cannot use two modems (run multiple
- sessions) on the same DOS or Windows v3.x ModemShare server at the
- same time. However, a Windows 95 ModemShare client CAN use a modem
- on one DOS or Windows v3.x ModemShare server at the same time it's
- using a modem on a different DOS or Windows v3.x server.
-
- Running multiple sessions on one server is ONLY a problem for Windows
- 95 clients trying to use DOS-based ModemShare servers. A Windows 95
- ModemShare client CAN use two modems on the same Windows 95 ModemShare
- server at the same time.
-
-
-
- ===================================
- 8. Finding the Information You Need
