  32. the necessary documentation, according to a survey of 
  33. 2500 Registered Companies.

  56. way for people to analyze and agree on the most 
  57. efficient routes under various circumstances.

  60. templates to completely map the core processes 
  61. required for an ISO or QS 9000 quality system - Why

  80. effort, whether ISO or QS 9000 or another methodology, 
  81. they typically identify large processes for 
  82. examination - that's the way they see things.  The

  84. processes which, when improved one by one, add up to

  101. output (the manufacturer) and the person who receives 
  102. the output (the customer).  The best process maps are 
  103. created by cross functional teams that have

  117. Documenting a Quality System

  119. In basic terms, a documented quality system is 
  120. composed of four tiers.  The top tier, or quality 
  121. manual, summarizes the quality system by answering the 
  122. question, why.  Tier two, the quality system 
  123. procedures, define the structure of the entire system 
  124. by answering the questions, who, what, when and where.  
  125. The bottom tiers, work instructions and forms, provide 
  126. very specific details on how each part of the system 
  127. works.

  129. Experience shows that defining and developing the 
  130. network of interrelated quality system procedures 
  131. needed to comply with ISO or QS 9000 is the most 
  132. important step in developing a quality system that 
  133. adds value and makes sense.  The procedures form the 
  134. bridge between policy and reality.  By developing 
  135. sound procedures first, the rest of your quality system 
  136. will flow naturally.  The policies simply summarize the 
  137. procedures.  And each procedure will define where work 
  138. instructions are needed.  Everyone knows that developing 
  139. procedures can be an overwhelming task, this is where 
  140. EtQ 9000 Maps comes to the rescue. The 21 crucial process 
  141. map templates provided form the hub of a quality system.

  143. Starting with an EtQ 9000 Maps template, a team will 
  144. customize it to address their work flow.  Once the map 
  145. is complete, they will use it to write a quality 
  146. system procedure describing the process.  Mapping the

  155. Using the Templates
  156.  
  157. EtQ 9000 Maps includes 21, linked, crucial process map 
  158. templates that can be edited using ABC FlowCharter 
  159. 4.0.  For more information on editing Maps, refer to 
  160. the ABC FlowCharter User's Guide.

  162. Each template has five sections, Map, Referenced Map, 
  163. Definitions, Prerequisites and Associated Maps which 
  164. are described below:

  166. Map - Each map is made up of four shapes to illustrate 
  167. the process.  Rounded rectangle (terminal), rectangle 
  168. (process), diamond (decision) and circle (connector). 
  169. Directly outside each shape is an example of the job 
  170. position commonly responsible for that task. Double 
  171. clicking on shadowed shapes that reference other maps 
  172. will bring you directly to that map.  To return to 
  173. the map that you came from, simply double click its 
  174. button in the Referenced Map or Associated Map 
  175. section. Moving from one map to the next, and then 
  176. back, is a snap.

  178. Referenced Maps - A list of all the maps referenced 
  179. in the open map.  Double clicking on a linked shape 
  180. will bring you directly to the map indicated. Only 
  181. the shadowed maps are presently available.  Additional 
  182. Maps will become available as you develop the quality 
  183. system and form links to new maps.  For more information 
  184. on building links between maps, refer to the ABC 
  185. FlowCharter User's Guide.

  187. Definitions - Definition of any unique term(s) or 
  188. abbreviation(s) used in the map.

  190. Prerequisites - Identifies supporting items that are 
  191. needed to implement the process illustrated by the 
  192. map. Prerequisites could include forms, reports and 
  193. records, just to name a few.

  195. Associated Maps - A series of shadowed, rectangular 
  196. shapes that allow you to go to all of the Maps that 
  197. are linked to the open map.  Double clicking on 
  198. shadowed shapes will bring you directly to the map 
  199. indicated.
