  31. NEW FEATURES IN ACROBAT AMBER READER 
  32. ====================================
  33. Amber is an update to Acrobat Reader with several new features:
  34.  
  35. Integration of PDF viewing into Netscape Navigator 2.0 You click 
  36. on a link to a PDF file in Navigator and Amber displays the file within 
  37. the Netscape window -- no more context switch to launch Acrobat as a 
  38. helper application.
  39.  
  40. Navigation among PDF, HTML, and other web content 
  41. transparently by integrating with Netscape's navigation functions
  42.  -- Go Back, etc. 
  43.  
  44. PDF documents can be viewed a page at a time over the web. 
  45. You don't wait for the whole document to download before display.
  46.  
  47. Progressive display of the PDF file, so you see the text first,
  48. then images, then embedded fonts.
  49.  
  50. Font blitting -- when viewed over the web, embedded fonts display
  51. first as substitution fonts while the embedded outline is retrieved
  52. then "blitted" onscreen for absolute fidelity.

  54. Dockable Toolbar within the Netscape window.

  56. New views -- continuous scrolling and 2-up pages.

  62. INSTALLING ACROBAT READER
  63. =========================
  64. **The Amber Reader is currently only available for Windows 95,
  65. Windows NT and Macintosh**
  66.  
  67. - To install Acrobat Amber Reader on your hard drive, from the Windows 
  68. Program Manager, double click on My Computer to open the 
  69. My Computer window.
  70. - Download the Amber self-extractiong archive Ambr32a1.exe
  71. to a temporary location (eg \TEMP).
  72. - double-click: [temporary location]:\Ambr32a1.exe
  73. - The file will expand the installation files and
  74. launch setup.  
  75. - Follow the instructions on your screen.
  76. - Installation requires approximately 3 MB of free hard disk space.
  77.  
  78. If you see the installer message "Warning! Setup couldn't install
  79. Netscape plugin (NPPDF32.DLL). Failed to locate Netscape Plugins directory."
  80. The installer was unable to install the plugin necessary for Acrobat to
  81. communicate with Netscape.
  82. - Make sure Netscape Navigator 2.0 B5 or greater is installed on your
  83. system.
  84. - Locate the Netscape plugin NPPDF32.DLL in the [drive]:\Acroweb directory.
  85. - Copy  [drive]:\Acroweb\NPPDF32.DLL to \Netscape\Program\plugins

  88. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  89. ===================
  90. - 386- or 486-based personal computer (486 recommended)
  91. - Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT
  92. - 4 MB application RAM
  93. - 3 MB hard disk space, plus 2 MB TEMP space available
  94. - 1.44 MB 3.5" floppy disk drive
  95. - Netscape Navigator 2.0 B3 for web integration

  98. VIEWING PDF PAGE-AT-A-TIME OVER THE WEB
  99. =======================================
  100. Best viewing performance for PDF documents over the web comes
  101. from optimized PDF files and a server with the ability to byteserve
  102. the files. The optimized PDF format and byteserver protocol are not 
  103. yet final, so we have provided a set of demonstration files on
  104. Adobe's server to allow you to test the page-at-a-time performance
  105. for yourself. See http://www.adobe.com/Amber 
  106.  
  107. Any nonoptimized PDF file can be viewed in the Netscape window 
  108. (without page-at-a-time display) with the Amber Reader
  109. and Netscape Navigator 2.0 version B5 or better.
  110.

  112. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  113. ================

  117. Errors During Acrobat Reader Installation
  118. Installer message "Warning! Setup couldn't install
  119. Netscape plugin (NPPDF32.DLL). Failed to locate Netscape Plugins directory."
  120. See instructions for manually installing the Netscape Plugin in the
  121. Installing Acrobat Reader section above.

  123. Viewing PDF files within Netscape Navigator
  124. - The Netscape Plugin NPPDF32.DLL must be properly installed. See above.
  125. - If the Amber Reader fails to launch within 30 seconds, it displays
  126. the message "Could not find Acrobat External Window Handler" and may
  127. cause Netscape to crash. This problem can be caused by improper installation
  128. of Acrobat or insufficient system resources. Try reinstalling the Amber Reader. 
  129.  
  130. Viewing PDF Files Page-at-a-time Over the Web
  131. - Requires a web server with the ability to byteserve PDF files and
  132. Acrobat Amber-optimized PDF files. With this release, optimized PDF
  133. files are only available on Adobe's web site. See the section
  134. Viewing PDF Files Page-at-a-time Over the Web above for more detail.
  135. - Optimized but non-byteserved files cannot navigate beyond the first
  136. page until the entire file is downloaded.
  137. - Low speed and poor-quality network connections can cause the Amber Reader
  138. to hang with a "Document Done" message in the Reader window footer.
  139. Quit the Reader and try again to access the document from Netscape.
  140. - Amber Reader times out after 5 minutes when it fails at accessing PDF files
  141. over the Web. If the document has not displayed after 5 minutes, 
  142. Quit the Reader and try again.
  143. - Occasionally, hitting the Netscape Stop button may cause the application
  144. to hang.
  145. - Optimized files from the D1 release of Acrobat Amber may not open properly.
  146.  
  147. Weblink Plug-in
  148. - An invalid gopher URL (e.g. gopher://example.com/pub/test.pdf) will
  149. download an error message as a text file with the PDF file name. Acrobat 
  150. Reader will return the message "There was an error opening this document. 
  151. File does not begin with %PDF-".
  152. - If the web browser is busy contacting the host for over one minute,
  153. Weblink will return the message "The web browser has not responded to
  154. your request for over 1 minute: terminating request". The browser may
  155. not respond to Weblink's attempt to cancel; use the web browser button
  156. in the toolbar to activate the browser and manually cancel the request.
  157. - URLs do not display in the Amber Reader footer within the Navigator
  158. window.
  159. - Navigator runs hidden when launched from a Weblink in a local PDF file.
  160. - Base URLs are not functional in this release -- enter the absolute URL.
  161.  
  162. Navigation from Netscape
  163. - Go Back currently returns you to the first page of a PDF file rather
  164. than the page you left.
  165. - Setting the Netscape Cache to 0 may cause Amber Reader or Netscape to
  166. hang, or the PDF document may fail to open.
  167. - Keyboard navigation (arrow keys, End, PageUp, etc.) may cause the Amber
  168. Reader to hang.
  169.  
  170. Fonts
  171. The Amber Reader does not currently recognize fonts not installed by the
  172. Alpha 1 Amber Reader installer.
  173.  
  174. Display
  175. Antialiasing is not functioning properly in this release.
  176. PDF Embedded in HTML Files
  177. - Printing the embedded PDF is not yet enabled. The HTML document
  178. will print with a blank space in place of the embedded PDF.
  179. - You cannot currently reliably embed more than one PDF file or 
  180. very large PDF files in an HTML document.
  181.  
  182. Secure Files
  183. The Amber Reader cannot currently accept a password for a secure
  184. document over the web. Choose Save As to download the PDF file to 
  185. disk, and open the file locally to enter the password.
  186.  
  187.  
  188. Features Not Available in This Release
  189. - Copy/Paste 
  190. - Acrobat keyboard shortcuts. The Netscape 
  191. Navigator API does not yet support this functionality.  
  192. - You cannot mail a PDF document as an attachment from Navigator.
  193. - PDF Document Info from the Navigator window.
  194. - Find feature.

  199. HOW TO REPORT BUGS
  200. ==================
  201. You may report problems to Adobe with the Bug Report form on Adobe's 
  202. Web site at http://www.adobe.com/Amber
  203.  
  204. Check the Known Problems section to see whether your problem has
  205. already been reported. Please provide as much detail as possible about 
  206. the problem you encounter. Detailed instructions are available on the 
  207. web site.
  208.  
  209. Due to the volume of reports we receive, Adobe cannot respond directly
  210. to individual bug reports. We do screen each report, and make every
  211. effort to keep the Known Problems list up to date. We appreciate your
  212. assistance in making the Acrobat Amber Reader a top quality product.

  215. ELECTRONIC END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT
  216. =====================================
  217. ADOBE SYSTEMS INCORPORATED
  218. ELECTRONIC END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT
  219. FOR UNRELEASED SOFTWARE
  220.  
  221. NOTICE TO USER:
  222. THIS IS A CONTRACT.  BY INSTALLING THIS SOFTWARE YOU ACCEPT ALL THE TERMS
  223. AND CONDITIONS OF THIS AGREEMENT.
  224.  
  225. This Adobe Systems Incorporated ("Adobe") End User License Agreement
  226. for Unreleased Software accompanies an unreleased (Alpha or Beta) version
  227. of an Adobe software product and related explanatory materials ("Software").
  228. The term Software shall also include any upgrades, modified versions or 
  229. updates of the Software licensed to you by Adobe.  This copy of the Software
  230. is licensed to you as the end user.  Please read this Agreement carefully. 
  231.  
  232. Adobe grants to you a nonexclusive license to use the Software for
  233. evaluation and trial use purposes only, provided that you agree to
  234. the following:
  235.  
  236. 1.  Use of the Software.
  237. - You may install the Software in a single location on a hard disk or other
  238. storage device; install and use the Software on a file server for use on a
  239. network for the purpose of installation onto hard disks or other storage
  240. devices or use of the Software over such network; and make backup copies of
  241. the Software.
  242.  
  243. - You may make unlimited copies of the Software and give copies to other
  244. persons or entities so long as (i) the use of such copies is for evaluation
  245. and trial purposes only and (ii) all copies contain this Agreement and the
  246. same copyright and other proprietary notices that appear on or in the
  247. Software.
  248.  
  249. 2.  Copyright. The Software is owned by Adobe and its suppliers, and its
  250. structure, organization and code are the valuable trade secrets of Adobe
  251. and its suppliers.  The Software is also protected by United States
  252. Copyright Law and International Treaty provisions.  You agree not to modify, adapt,
  253. translate, reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble or otherwise attempt
  254. to discover the source code of the Software.  You may use trademarks only
  255. to identify printed output produced by the Software, in accordance with
  256. accepted trademark practice, including identification of trademark ownerÆs
  257. name.  Such use of any trademark does not give you any rights of ownership
  258. in that trademark.  Except as stated above, this Agreement does not grant
  259. you any intellectual property rights in the Software.
  260.  
  261. 3.  Cooperation with Adobe.  During the term of this Agreement, you will
  262. provide feedback to Adobe regarding testing and use of the Software,
  263. including error or bug reports.
  264.  
  265. 4.  No Warranty.  You acknowledge that the Software is a pre release
  266. version, does not represent final product from Adobe, and may contain bugs,
  267. errors and other problems that could cause system failures. Consequently,
  268. the Software is provided to you AS IS, and Adobe disclaims any warranty
  269. or liability obligations to you of any kind.   You acknowledge that Adobe
  270. has not promised or guaranteed to you that such Software will be announced
  271. or made available to anyone in the future, that Adobe has no express or
  272. implied obligation to you to announce or introduce the Software and that
  273. Adobe may not introduce a product similar or compatible with the Software.
  274. Accordingly, you acknowledge that any research or development that you 
  275. perform regarding the Software or any product associated with the Software 
  276. is done entirely at your  own risk.  ADOBE AND ITS SUPPLIERS DO NOT AND 
  277. CANNOT WARRANT THE PERFORMANCE OR RESULTS YOU MAY OBTAIN BY USING THE 
  278. SOFTWARE OR DOCUMENTATION.  ADOBE AND ITS SUPPLIERS MAKE NO WARRANTIES, 
  279. EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, AS TO NONINFRINGEMENT OF THIRD PARTY RIGHTS, 
  280. MERCHANTABILITY, OR FITNESS FOR ANY PARTICULAR PURPOSE.  IN NO EVENT 
  281. WILL ADOBE OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, 
  282. INCIDENTAL OR SPECIAL DAMAGES, INCLUDING ANY LOST PROFITS OR LOST 
  283. SAVINGS, EVEN IF AN ADOBE REPRESENTATIVE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE 
  284. POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY CLAIM BY ANY THIRD PARTY.  
  285. Some states or jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation 
  286. of incidental, consequential or special damages, or the exclusion of 
  287. implied warranties or limitations on how long an implied warranty may 
  288. last, so the above limitations may not apply to you.
  289.  
  290. 5.  Termination of Use.  Upon receipt of a later unreleased version of 
  291. the Software or a publicly released commercial version of the Software, 
  292. you agree to destroy all earlier unreleased versions of the Software 
  293. received from Adobe and to abide by the terms of the End User License 
  294. Agreement for any such later versions of the Software.  Notwithstanding 
  295. anything in this paragraph to the contrary, if you are located outside 
  296. the United States of America, you agree that you will return or destroy 
  297. all unreleased versions of the Software within thirty (30) days of the 
  298. completion of your testing of the Software if such date is earlier than 
  299. the date for AdobeÆs first commercial shipment of the publicly released 
  300. (commercial) Software.
  301.  
  302. 5. Governing Law and General Provisions.  This Agreement will be governed 
  303. by the laws of the State of California, U.S.A., excluding the application 
  304. of its conflicts of law rules.  This Agreement will not be governed by the 
  305. United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of 
  306. Goods, the application of which is expressly excluded.  If any part of 
  307. this Agreement is found void and unenforceable, it will not affect the 
  308. validity of the balance of the Agreement, which shall remain valid and 
  309. enforceable according to its terms.  You agree that the Software will 
  310. not be shipped, transferred or exported into any country or used in any 
  311. manner prohibited by the United States Export Administration Act or any 
  312. other export laws, restrictions or regulations.  This Agreement shall 
  313. automatically terminate upon failure by you to comply with its terms.  
  314. This Agreement may only be modified in writing signed by an authorized 
  315. officer of Adobe.
  316.  
  317. 6. Notice to Government End Users.  If this product is acquired under 
  318. the terms of a:  GSA contract- Use, reproduction or disclosure is subject 
  319. to the restrictions set forth in the applicable ADP Schedule contract;  
  320. DoD contract- Use, duplication or disclosure by the Government is subject 
  321. to restrictions as set forth in subparagraph (c) (1) (ii) of 252.227-7013;  
  322. Civilian agency contract- Use, reproduction, or disclosure is subject to 
  323. 52.227-19 (a) through (d) and restrictions set forth in the accompanying 
  324. end user agreement.
