1. Making Install Efficient
----------------------------
To maximize the efficiency of Smartsuite Install, you should run the DOS
command CHKDSK /F on the drives in which you are planning to install
SmartSuite. Doing so will reclaim lost clusters on your hard drive(s).
Run CHKDSK with Windows not loaded, and before you run Install. You do not
have to convert the lost clusters to files.

2. Installing in a WINOS2 Session
----------------------------------
If you are going to install SmartSuite in a WINOS2 session, be sure to
set the DPMI_MEMORY_LIMIT to at least 4 megabytes for the session
so that SmartSuite Install does not run into any memory problems.

3. Installing on Computers With Multiple Configurations
--------------------------------------------------------
The SmartSuite Install program may offer to modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT file,
by adding a line to load the SHARE utility and by updating the PATH
statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file (it can also add Notes to the path,
if you have Notes installed). If Install offers to update the path, and
you choose Yes, Install will modify only the first path statement it
encounters. If you use a release of DOS that supports multiple
configurations, and your AUTOEXEC.BAT file contains multiple path
statements for multiple start-up configurations, Install may not modify
the correct path. The same concern is true if you have a dual-boot setup.
After you install SmartSuite, examine AUTOEXEC.BAT to verify that
Install modified the path for the configuration under which you will run
the SmartSuite applications.

4. Ignoring a Size Field
-------------------------
During SmartSuite Install, in the "Select SmartSuite Applications to
Customize" dialog box, there is a list box that includes a size field.
That field shows the default size of an application. If you customize
an application and delete features, the dialog box doesn't update the
size field, even though the application now requires less disk space.

5. Reading Individual Application README Files
-----------------------------------------------
After you install Smartsuite, you can read the README files of the individual
applications for more information. Those README files reside in each
application's directory.

6. Deleting an Extraneous Directory
------------------------------------
Under certain conditions, SmartSuite Install creates an empty directory
called \LOTSHARE\SUITE. You can delete that directory, as it is not needed
by the SmartSuite applications.

7. Updating SMARTCTR.INI
-------------------------
If you reinstall a Lotus application, but place it in a different location,
the LOTUS.INI file is updated to reflect the change but the SMARTCTR.INI
file is not updated. The result is SmartCenter can no longer find
the reinstalled application on its icon palette.
For example, if you had a copy of Ami Pro on the C: drive, and you then
reinstalled Ami Pro onto the D: drive, SmartCenter would not find Ami Pro.
There are three solutions for this situation:
1. If you changed the location of the application while SmartCenter was
running, click the application's icon. The "Problem Starting Application"
dialog box will appear. Click Change Application. Enter the new
command line path and working directory for the application. Click OK.
2. If SmartCenter was not running when you changed the location of the
application, start SmartCenter. Click the SmartCenter menu icon.
Choose Customize SmartCenter. Highlight the application that you want to
change and click Change Application. Enter the new command line path and
working directory for the application. Click OK. Select the check box
for the application, to display it on the icon palette. Click OK.
3. The third solution is to delete SMARTCTR.INI and then reinstall
SmartCenter, using the SmartSuite Install program.

8. Using a Desktop Utility
---------------------------
If you are using a developer utility that does background monitoring of
Windows desktop activity, such as Winsight, you should avoid clicking
outside of the Customize Lotus SmartCenter dialog box.

9. Using the SmartSuite Guided Tour and ScreenCam Movies
---------------------------------------------------------
The SmartSuite Guided Tour uses the MS Sans Serif font, which comes
with Microsoft Windows. In the unlikely event that you do not have the
MS Sans Serif font loaded and you also do not have the Adobe Type Manager
(ATM) running, you will receive a message telling you that you need to
load the MS Sans Serif font. If you don't have the MS Sans Serif font
loaded but you do have the Adobe Type Manager (ATM) running, you will
receive the message: "Invalid property value." You can ignore the message,
but you do need to load the MS Sans Serif font.
The SmartSuite Guided Tour files are in a SmartCenter subdirectory called
[name]\TOUR, for example, \SMARTCTR\TOUR. If you want to save disk space,
you can delete the files from that subdirectory after you have watched the
tour to your satisfaction.
Some of the SmartSuite Help cards contain movie icons. Clicking one of
these icons will play a ScreenCam movie of the steps in the Help card.
If you have removed these ScreenCam movies from your hard disk, or if you
didn't install ScreenCam movies when you installed SmartCenter, you will not
get a message informing you that Help can't find the movies. The only
indication is that the movie will not appear.

10. Creating Your Own Bitmaps
-----------------------------
Lotus suggests the following if you want to create your own bitmaps for
the SmartCenter icon palette.
* Make a copy of the bitmap template file. The template file name is
USERDEF.BMP, and it is located in the SMARTCTR directory. Make sure
to rename the file. For example:
COPY C:\SMARTCTR\USERDEF.BMP C:\SMARTCTR\MYPIC.BMP
* Bitmap file names cannot begin with a number. Thus, MY123.BMP is a valid
file name, but 123MINE.BMP is not.
* Your bitmaps should be no larger than the size of the template,
which is 24 x 42 pixels.
* To create an 18 x 18 pixel bitmap, use the upper left portion of
your template.
* To create a 24 x 24 pixel bitmap, use the bottom part of the same
template.
* Do not use the upper right portion of the template.
* Use a light gray background; don't change the template.
* Don't add a 3D beveled edge: SmartCenter automatically adds a
3D edge when it places your bitmap on the icon palette.
* Save your bitmap file as a 16-color bitmap.
NOTE: The icon palette can display no more than 32 icons.
