  4. Welcome to Mini NoteTab! A Freeware editor by
  5. Eric Fookes.
  6.  
  7. Introduction
  8. ------------
  9. Mini NoteTab is not just another Windows Notepad
  10. replacement! It is a feature-rich program with a
  11. selection of original productivity tools that you
  12. will find in no other editor.
  13.  
  14. The editor is capable of opening a very large number
  15. of files (the actual limit is determined by the
  16. amount of free system resources). Each document is
  17. displayed on a tabbed page making it easy to switch
  18. between them. A separate window, called the Document
  19. Selector, makes it easy to find a specific document
  20. when a large number of them are open.
  21.  
  22. Mini NoteTab can be configured to occupy a minimum
  23. of screen estate and stay on top of other
  24. applications. Context-sensitive shortcut menus
  25. provide access to all the editor's commands. The
  26. editor makes it easy to open frequently used files;
  27. it can even do so automatically each time you start
  28. the program. You can also open files by drag-and-
  29. dropping them from File Manager or Explorer. The
  30. editor can restore its size and position on the
  31. desktop from a previous session.

  33. Special attention has been given to even the smallest
  34. detail. The editor has undergone extensive testing
  35. to ensure that it performs reliably under all
  36. circumstances. However, if a problem does arise and
  37. is reported to me, it is usually fixed in a matter
  38. of days.

  40. This program is Freeware! Do tell others about it
  41. if you find it useful.

  50. Why "Mini"?
  51. -----------
  52. Mini NoteTab has been optimized to handle notes
  53. and small text files efficiently. It has been designed
  54. to use a minimum of Windows system resources. As a
  55. result, you can safely keep this program open all the
  56. time, even if you have many files open.
  57.  
  58. If you need to edit text files larger than 41 kb,
  59. use Super NoteTab instead of this program (see further
  60. down for details).

  65. * Covers all essential features available in Notepad
  66.   (including LOG).
  67. * Open and edit many documents at once (only limited
  68.   by system resources).

  107. Installation
  108. ------------
  109. There is no special procedure to follow. Just place
  110. the program and its associated files in the Windows
  111. directory or in a dedicated folder (directory).
  112.  
  113. - Windows 3.1 / NT 3.5 users:
  114. If you want to add Mini NoteTab to one of your Program
  115. Manager groups, the easiest way to do it is with
  116. File Manager. Just select the file MININOTE.EXE and
  117. drag it from File Manager to the group where you would
  118. like its icon to appear. You can also run the program
  119. by double-clicking on it from File Manager.

  121. - Windows 95 / NT 4 users:
  122. The easiest way to set the Mini NoteTab icon on your
  123. desktop is to use Explorer. Just select the file 
  124. MININOTE.EXE and drag it from Explorer to an
  125. unoccupied space on your desktop. You can also add a
  126. shortcut to it in your Start menu by choosing
  127. Settings / Taskbar...

  130. Uninstalling
  131. ------------
  132. If you have dedicated a folder for the editor, just
  133. delete that folder and all its files (except
  134. documents you may have saved there and want to keep!).
  135.  
  136. Otherwise, just delete MININOTE.EXE, MININOTE.INI,
  137. MININOTE.HLP, all files with the extensions ".FVR"
  138. and ".CLB" (in the program's directory), FILEPROP.INF,
  139. WHATSNEW.TXT, and this README.TXT file. All these
  140. files are located in the same directory as
  141. Mini NoteTab.
  142.  
  143. If you have executed Mini NoteTab from a CD-Rom, you
  144. will find the MININOTE.INI and FILEPROP.INF files
  145. in the Windows directory.
  146.  
  147. There is no need to delete items from Windows' system
  148. registry or INI files as the editor does not store
  149. any information in them.

  160. If you need to edit large files and use Windows 95 or
  161. NT 4, you may want to download Super NoteTab. It is
  162. an editor similar to Mini NoteTab (also Freeware),
  163. but is capable of editing files as large as memory
  164. permits.

  281. not expect a reply from me. Indeed, due to a heavy
  282. work load I only have the time to respond to a limited
  283. number of E-mails. Having said this, rest assured that
  284. I always take the time to read your messages carefully
  285. and take note of all your suggestions.

  288. the list of known problems in the last part of this
  289. README.TXT file. Also check, if possible, whether the
  290. bug has been fixed in the latest update. Remember to
  291. indicate which program variant and version number you

  312. components from a Shareware VCL package called
  313. the "Super Labeled Input Controls". The package,
  314. which I developed, is available for downloading from

  322. Known Issues
  323. ------------
  324. * The editor cannot open files that have been
  325.   locked by another application.
  326. * The Undo command cannot undo all operations.
  327. * Sometimes, but usually quite rare, the caret
  328.   disappears. If this happens, just click on
  329.   another tab and then return to the document.
  330. * Sometimes, modal dialog and message boxes that
  331.   are supposed to stay on top of the application
  332.   disappear behind it. If this happens, hit the ESC
  333.   key to cancel the dialog and return the control to
  334.   the main application window. This problem is due
  335.   to a bug in Delphi's method for handling the
  336.   Z-order of windows.
