1. SFT III Support
==================
Because NDS cannot be loaded in the MS Engine and Backup Director
NLMs must be loaded in the IO engine, Backup Director does not
currently support version 4.0 of SFT III.
Both Novell and Palindrome are currently working on a solution to
this problem.
2. Restoring Installation Volumes
==================================
If you have to restore an installation volume that contains
centralized File History Databases, you must also restore the File
History Database for each protected resource after restoring the
installation volume.
To restore File History Databases
1. Access Resource Manager
2. Tag protected resources
3. Open the Operation menu and select Restore/History Database
3. Adding Administrators to the Admin List
==========================================
When adding Administrators to the Admin List, be aware that anyone
on the Admin list has equivalent rights to the auto login user. In
other words, administrators on the Admin list have the same NetWare
rights that the auto login user has.
4. AutoLoaders and Cleaning Cartridges
======================================
Do not install cleaning cartridges in AutoLoaders prior to
configuring a cleaning slot (using Device Manager). If you place a
cleaning cartridge in the AutoLoader prior to configuring a slot,
Backup Director will load the cleaning cartridge in the tape drive
repeatedly, thereby expending the cartridge.
5. Windows Shells and NetWare 4.x
=================================
If you install Backup Director on a NetWare 4.x server while
running Windows and then later install a Windows shell program
(such as Central Point's PC Tools), you must copy the unicode
tables from the WINDOWS\NLS directory to the shell program's root
directory.
For example, if your shell program's directory is \CPS, you must
create an NLS directory as a subdirectory to \CPS and copy the
UNI*.* files from the \WINDOWS\NLS directory to the \CPS\NLS
directory.
6. Using the same Library Name
==============================
If you change the name of your media library (library name), do not
use a library name you have already used.
If you use a previously used name (and erase or format tapes from
the original library), the labels of the erased/formatted tapes
cannot be used again in your new library.
For example, if your original library name was ADMIN, and you used
ADMIN again as a library name later, if your format ADMIN:A:1 from
the original library, your new library will not create an ADMIN:A:1
and would start with ADMIN:A:2 (as if ADMIN:A:1 was retired or
forgotten).
7. Checking the NetWare Environment
===================================
If you notice a negative impact on backup performance after
updating modules on the network, run PALCHECK.NLM. PALCHECK.NLM is
copied to the SYS:\SYSTEM directory of the installation server.
When run on the server, PALCHECK examines currently loaded NLMs and
makes recommendations based on what it finds.
8. PALSHELL Command Line options
=================================
PALSHELL.NLM allows you to perform command line operations at the
server console that you would normally perform from the Windows
interface.
Command line documentation for PALSHELL.NLM is included in
PALSHELL.TXT file in the \TOOLS directory on disk 4.
9. Unfreed Resources on NetWare 4.1 Servers
============================================
Due to a bug in NetWare 4.1, upon termination of some NLMs you will
see the following messages:
"xx-xx-xx xx:xx:xx pm: SERVER-4.10-2713
Module did not release 1 resource
Module: Palindrome Environment Checker
Resource: Service Connections
Description: Service Connections"
"xx-xx-xx xx:xx:xx pm: SERVER-4.10-2715
Module did not release 64 resources
Module: Palindrome Environment Checker
Resource: Small memory allocations
Description: Alloc Memory (Bytes)"
The NLMs that are affected are:
- PALCHECK.NLM
- PAL.NLM
- PALMEDIA.NLM
- PALSHELL.NLM
The resources will be left on Netware 4.1 servers when these NLMs
are loaded when a job queue does not exist. When a job queue
exists, the problem will not occur.
10. Documentation Corrections
=============================
General
-------
The telephone and fax numbers the United Kingdom and European
Headquarters (Palindrome U.K.) are:
Phone 011 44 1344 360888

Administrator's Guide
---------------------
Chapters 2 and 9
Backup Director has two additional rules that can be assigned to
files: On Demand and Always.
>On Demand Rule
If the rule is On Demand, Backup Director writes the file to media
only if you manually select the file in File Manager or perform a
full backup operation through Resource Manager. Use the On Demand
rule carefully because automatic operations skip files that have
this rule assigned. Use this rule for files that do not
normally need backups (for example, *.BAK or *.TMP files).
>Always Rule
If the rule is Always, Backup Director writes the file to media
even if the current version is on the media set. Do not use the
Always rule unless you need to make multiple copies of the same
file version on the same media set.
>Page 3-6
The que card references for the media and device operations should
read:
To format media, see page 10-14
To identify currently loaded media, see page 10-4
To add a device, see page 11-5
>Page 8-22
File History Databases can be distributed to NetWare volume
resources only. (Clarification)
>Page D-14
The Media Details tab has a new field. The Last Updated field
indicates the last time the media was used for a backup operation.
The Last Formatted field has been renamed Created On to indicate
when the media was created.
11. VAULT LEAD TIME
===================
If you increase the number of days to rotate media sets in Configuration
Manager in the Scheduling Tab, you should make a corresponding change to the
"Notice Required for Retrieving Off-Site Media" on the Off-Site Media Tab.
The following are Palindrome's recommendation for off-site notification:
If rotating media sets... Set off-site notice for:
------------------------- ------------------------
Once per week 14 days
Twice per week 7 days
More than twice per week 4 days
If you fail to adjust the off-site media notification, the off-site media
advisor may suggest that the same media be taken off-site and retrieved from
off-site at the same time.
12. DOS WORKSTATION TSA AND NETWARE 4.X
=======================================
If you specify trust mode when loading the DOS TSA on a DOS workstation,
the user ADMIN is the only user that can connect to the TSA when adding the
workstation to the Protected Resource List. This is a requirement for NetWare
4.x servers protecting DOS workstations only.
The user ADMIN does not need any special rights on the server but the user
must be defined in the default bindery context for the server that
the TSA is connecting to.
If you do not want to create an ADMIN user, you can configure passwords on
each workstation or not configure a password at all.
If you configure a password, you will be asked to specify
the password when adding the resource to the Protected Resource List.
If you do not configure a password, you can add the workstation to the
Protected Resource List without being prompted to login.
13. LIST OF CERTIFIED DEVICES
=============================
The following is a list of certified devices as of May 1, 1995.
This list of devices is continually updated. Contact Palindrome for the
most recent Certified Device List.
