  29. Because NDS cannot be loaded in the MS Engine and Backup Director
  30. NLMs must be loaded in the IO engine, Backup Director does not
  31. currently support version 4.0 of SFT III.
  32.  
  33. Both Novell and Palindrome are currently working on a solution to
  34. this problem.
  35.  
  36. 2. Restoring Installation Volumes
  37. ==================================
  38. If you have to restore an installation volume that contains
  39. centralized File History Databases, you must also restore the File
  40. History Database for each protected resource after restoring the
  41. installation volume.
  42. To restore File History Databases
  43. 1.   Access Resource Manager
  44. 2.   Tag protected resources
  45. 3.   Open the Operation menu and select Restore/History Database
  46.  
  47. 3. Adding Administrators to the Admin List
  48. ==========================================
  49. When adding Administrators to the Admin List, be aware that anyone
  50. on the Admin list has equivalent rights to the auto login user. In
  51. other words, administrators on the Admin list have the same NetWare
  52. rights that the auto login user has.
  53.  
  54. 4. AutoLoaders and Cleaning Cartridges
  55. ======================================
  56. Do not install cleaning cartridges in AutoLoaders prior to
  57. configuring a cleaning slot (using Device Manager). If you place a
  58. cleaning cartridge in the AutoLoader prior to configuring a slot,
  59. Backup Director will load the cleaning cartridge in the tape drive
  60. repeatedly, thereby expending the cartridge.
  61.  
  62. 5. Windows Shells and NetWare 4.x
  63. =================================
  64. If you install Backup Director on a NetWare 4.x server while
  65. running Windows and then later install a Windows shell program
  66. (such as Central Point's PC Tools), you must copy the unicode
  67. tables from the WINDOWS\NLS directory to the shell program's root
  68. directory.
  69.  
  70. For example, if your shell program's directory is \CPS, you must
  71. create an NLS directory as a subdirectory to \CPS and copy the
  72. UNI*.* files from the \WINDOWS\NLS directory to the \CPS\NLS
  73. directory.
  74.  
  75. 6. Using the same Library Name
  76. ==============================
  77. If you change the name of your media library (library name), do not
  78. use a library name you have already used.
  79.  
  80. If you use a previously used name (and erase or format tapes from
  81. the original library), the labels of the erased/formatted tapes 
  82. cannot be used again in your new library.
  83.  
  84. For example, if your original library name was ADMIN, and you used
  85. ADMIN again as a library name later, if your format ADMIN:A:1 from
  86. the original library, your new library will not create an ADMIN:A:1
  87. and would start with ADMIN:A:2 (as if ADMIN:A:1 was retired or
  88. forgotten). 
  89.  
  90. 7. Checking the NetWare Environment
  91. ===================================
  92. If you notice a negative impact on backup performance after
  93. updating modules on the network, run PALCHECK.NLM. PALCHECK.NLM is
  94. copied to the SYS:\SYSTEM directory of the installation server.
  95. When run on the server, PALCHECK examines currently loaded NLMs and
  96. makes recommendations based on what it finds.
  97.  
  98. 8. PALSHELL Command Line options
  99. =================================
  100. PALSHELL.NLM allows you to perform command line operations at the
  101. server console that you would normally perform from the Windows
  102. interface.
  103.  
  104. Command line documentation for PALSHELL.NLM is included in
  105. PALSHELL.TXT file in the \TOOLS directory on disk 4.
  106.  
  107. 9. Unfreed Resources on NetWare 4.1 Servers
  108. ============================================
  109. Due to a bug in NetWare 4.1, upon termination of some NLMs you will
  110. see the following messages:

  130. The resources will be left on Netware 4.1 servers when these NLMs
  131. are loaded when a job queue does not exist.  When a job queue
  132. exists, the problem will not occur.

  147. Backup Director has two additional rules that can be assigned to
  148. files: On Demand and Always. 
  149.  
  150. >On Demand Rule
  151. If the rule is On Demand, Backup Director writes the file to media
  152. only if you manually select the file in File Manager or perform a
  153. full backup operation through Resource Manager. Use the On Demand
  154. rule carefully because automatic operations skip files that have
  155. this rule assigned. Use this rule for files that do not
  156. normally need backups (for example, *.BAK or *.TMP files).
  157.  
  158. >Always Rule
  159. If the rule is Always, Backup Director writes the file to media
  160. even if the current version is on the media set. Do not use the
  161. Always rule unless you need to make multiple copies of the same
  162. file version on the same media set.

  176. The Media Details tab has a new field. The Last Updated field
  177. indicates the last time the media was used for a backup operation.
  178. The Last Formatted field has been renamed Created On to indicate
  179. when the media was created.

  181. 11. VAULT LEAD TIME
  182. ===================
  183. If you increase the number of days to rotate media sets in Configuration 
  184. Manager in the Scheduling Tab, you should make a corresponding change to the 
  185. "Notice Required for Retrieving Off-Site Media" on the Off-Site Media Tab.

  187. The following are Palindrome's recommendation for off-site notification:
  188.  
  189.     If rotating media sets...       Set off-site notice for:

  195. If you fail to adjust the off-site media notification, the off-site media 
  196. advisor may suggest that the same media be taken off-site and retrieved from 
  197. off-site at the same time.

  199. 12. DOS WORKSTATION TSA AND NETWARE 4.X
  200. =======================================
  201. If you specify trust mode when loading the DOS TSA on a DOS workstation, 
  202. the user ADMIN is the only user that can connect to the TSA when adding the 
  203. workstation to the Protected Resource List. This is a requirement for NetWare
  204. 4.x servers protecting DOS workstations only.
  205.  
  206. The user ADMIN does not need any special rights on the server but the user 
  207. must be defined in the default bindery context for the server that 
  208. the TSA is connecting to.  
  209.  
  210. If you do not want to create an ADMIN user, you can configure passwords on 
  211. each workstation or not configure a password at all.
  212.  
  213. If you configure a password, you will be asked to specify
  214. the password when adding the resource to the Protected Resource List.
  215.  
  216. If you do not configure a password, you can add the workstation to the 
  217. Protected Resource List without being prompted to login.
  218.
