"In a client-server environment, user interaction occurs via client requests for services or resources, to which a server responds with the requested information. The server role can be fulfilled by a number of different systems, including PCS running specialized software for servicing networks. This type of software is called a network operating system (NOS). There are a number of crucial services that any NOS must supply in order to provide support for network users.
NetWare 4.1 includes seven core services, all of which are crucial to effective and productive networking. These core services are:
File
NetWare 4.1 incorporates file-by-file compression that more than doubles disk space. NetWare 4.1 includes disk block suballocation to improve disk space usage.
Print
NetWare 4.1 includes simplified, graphically-oriented printing facilities and improved printer handling. NetWare 4.1 provides a single common utility for local and remote printing.
Directory
NetWare Directory Services (NDS) is a new way of organizing, accessing, and controlling network resources. The directory offers access to the total network through a single login and provides transparent access to resources. It uses a distributed database that can be replicated and partitioned, making it extraordinarily available, robust and fault tolerant. NDS uses powerful GUI utilities so end-users and administrators can access network resources with simple drag and drop operations.
Security
NetWare 4.1 includes powerful password encryption and digital signature technologies. NetWare 4.1 also includes multiple levels of file, directory service, administrator, and server access controls.
Integrated Messaging
NetWare MHS Services supply built-in message storage and
forward services, and basic E-mail to all NetWare 4.1 users.
Multiprotocol Routing
NetWare 4.1 supplies built-in routing services, including options for IPX, TCP/IP and AppleTalk protocols. NetWare 4.1 includes numerous routing performance enhancements for local and wide-area networks.
Network Management
NetWare 4.1 provides powerful management and server administration facilities and utilities Novell has instrumented all of its core code modules with built-in management logic to make each component highly manageable. NetWare 4.1 is remotely manageable and supports industry standard SNMP management protocols directly. Though Novell believes all these services are critical to successful networking, NetWare 4.1's full complement of core services is unmatched by any other NOS. These core services lay the foundation for pervasive computing, making NetWare immediately useful and productive."
