  23. FTP Software products for specific departments, groups, and individuals in 
  24. your network.

  40. 1. Before installing Custom Install Manager:

  43. Before you install Custom Install Manager, you should perform the following steps:
  44.  
  45. 1  Map the organization of your network in terms of how you plan to 
  46.    distribute the FTP Software, Inc. products.
  47.  
  48. 2  Run the Setup program for each product from a client PC and, when 
  49.    prompted to choose a type of installation, click Administrator. 
  50.    Complete the installation, which creates a distribution on a server 
  51.    (from which clients can install the product).
  52.    -or-
  53.    For 16-bit products, set up a network installation as described in the 
  54.    documentation.

  56. 3  Install Custom Install Manager on a PC that is using the Windows 95 
  57.    or Windows NT 4.0 operating system and that has network connectivity.

  59. 4. Read the "To install Custom Install Manager" and "To start using 
  60.    Custom Install Manager" instructions that follow this list.

  63. 2 Installing Custom Install Manager
  64. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  66. To install Custom Install Manager, you should perform the following steps:
  67.  
  68. 1. Run the Setup program on a PC that is using the Windows 95 or 
  69.    Windows NT operating system and that has network connectivity, from 
  70.    the Cim folder of the CD-ROM or from disks that you order separately. 
  71.  
  72. 2. In the Choose Folder for Data Files dialog box, choose a folder in 
  73.    which Setup will install the database file and a setup_k.reg file that 
  74.    is used to install the FTP Software, Inc. TCP/IP protocol stack on 
  75.    Windows 95 systems. 
  76.  
  77.    If you are only customizing OnNet16 installations, choose the folder
  78.    where you have the OnNet16 distribution. 
  79.  
  80. 3. When prompted, let the Setup program restart your system.

  83. 3. Starting to use Custom Install Manager
  84. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  86. When you start up Custom Install Manager for the first time, you need to 
  87. configure some information. To ensure proper configuration, you should perform
  88. the following steps:
  89.  
  90. 1. From the Start menu, click Programs, point to FTP Custom Install Manager, 
  91.    and, on the submenu, click FTP Custom Install Manager.
  92.  
  93. 2. In the Select Customization Set File for OnNet32 Install dialog box, 
  94.    choose the Setup information file (Setup.inf) in the 32-bit distribution 
  95.    you created during the Adminstrator installation of a 32-bit product. 
  96.    (If you do not have a 32-bit product, you can use the Setup information 
  97.    file for a 16-bit product as a placeholder.)

  99. 3. In the Select Customization Set File for OnNet16 Install dialog box, choose 
  100.    the Setup information file (Setup.inf) in the a 16-bit product distribution 
  101.    you created when you set up a network distribution of a 16-bit product.
  102.    (If you do not have a 16-bit product, you can use the Setup information 
  103.    file for a 32-bit product as a placeholder.)

  105. 4. Read the online Help for information on how to get started with and 
  106.    use Custom Install Manager.
  107.  
  108. 5. Ensure that the Customization Sets Folders in the Options properties
  109.    are set to the folders that contain the FTP Software product distributions. 
  110.    You can store the customization sets in any folder, but when you (or your  
  111.    users) run the product Setup program, you must ensure that the customization 
  112.    sets are in the same folder as the product distribution.
  113.  
  114.    If you do not keep your customization sets in the same folder as the product 
  115.    distribution, you should copy the Netcard.inf and Timezone.ini files from the 
  116.    product distribution to the customization sets folder for any 16-bit product. 
  117.    Both the 16-bit Setup program and Custom Install Manager need the Netcard.inf 
  118.    file to configure the TCP/IP stack and the Timezone.ini file to set a default 
  119.    time zone for the Network Time program.
  120.  
  121. 6  In the organization pane, create groups and clients, based on the 
  122.    organization map you have already planned. 
  123.  
  124.    Note: If you plan to create a customization set for a Windows 3.1 group 
  125.    or client, limit the name of the group or client to 8 letters. Custom
  126.    Install Manager creates files based on the name and the 16-bit Setup 
  127.    program does not work with Setup information files that exceed the 
  128.    DOS 8.3 naming conventions.

  130. 7  Create true default customization sets for each product and specify 
  131.    the resulting Setup information and, if applicable, TCP/IP stack 
  132.    Registry files in each tab of the Options dialog box.
  133.  
  134. 8  Create customization sets for your groups and clients. 
  135.  
  136. 9  On the client computer, map the network server to a drive letter and
  137.    run the Setup program for the FTP Software, Inc. program. Ensure that
  138.    the Setup information (*.inf) file for the client is in the same folder
  139.    as the Setup program. 
  140.  
  141.    Read the online Help to learn the Setup command line options for the 
  142.    product you are installing.

  146. 4. Known Limitations

  149. 4.1 The Setup Command

  152. When you use the setup /h filename form of the setup command, you must specify 
  153. the full pathname of the .inf file, even when it is in the current directory.

  156. 4.2 Specifying the Destination Directory
  157. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  159. If you create a customized installation to upgrade a 16-bit product, you 
  160. cannot use Custom Install Manager to specify a destination directory different 
  161. from the directory that contains the earlier version of the 16-bit product. 
  162.  
  163. To install the product to a different directory, the user must choose a New 
  164. Installation Type and respond to the dialog boxes in the Setup program.
