FLASH BIOS UPGRADES V SOFTWARE TSR FIX
THERE ARE A NUMBER OF POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO THE MILLENNIUM BUG
PROBLEM IN PCS BUT THE MOST POPULAR ARE FLASH BIOS UPGRADES AND
SOFTWARE TSR FIXES
A TSR FIX IS A SMALL PIECE OF SOFTWARE THAT ONCE RUN REMAINS IN THE MEMORY
OF YOUR PC. A TSR DESIGNED TO FIX THE MILLENNIUM BUG KEEPS AN EYE ON THE PC
CLOCKS AND CHANGES THEM TO THE CORRECT DATE BEFORE ANY OTHER SOFTWARE HAS A
CHANCE TO READ THE WRONG DATE.
A FLASH BIOS UPGRADE INVOLVES UPDATING THE BIOS OF YOUR PC
USING A SOFTWARE PATCH. THIS PATCH OVERWRITES YOUR EXISTING BIOS WITH
A NEWER VERSION FROM THE MANUFACTURER. MANY OLD PCS HOWEVER WILL NOT
SUPPORT A FLASH UPGRADE WHEREAS ALL PCS WILL SUPPORT A SOFTWARE TSR FIX.
THERE IS AN ADDITIONAL PROBLEM OF 'LATENCY' WITH BIOS FIXES. THEY ALL
WORK AFTER THE RTC HAS REPORTED THE INCORRECT DATE. HOW LONG THAT WILL
TAKE IS CALLED 'LATENCY'. THAT LATENCY PERIOD MIGHT BE AS LONG AS THE
LIFETIME OF THE PC IN SOME CASES. THROUGHOUT THE LATENCY PERIOD PROGRAMS
MAY OBTAIN A DATE WHICH IS INCORRECT BY 100 YEARS.
THE MILLENNIUM BUG TOOLKIT TSR HAS NO LATENCY AT ALL. THERE IS NO
OPPORTUNITY FOR THE SYSTEM TO GET A DATE INCORRECT BY 100 YEARS.
