  1. HyperSnap (formerly SnapShot/32) brings professional quality, 
  2. convenient Windows 95 and NT screen captures to your finger-tips.  
  3. It was designed for ease of use, with powerful and useful 
  4. features to aid the professional as well as support the needs of 
  5. the occasional user.  Use it just a few times - you'll find it to 
  6. be indispensable.

  8. HyperSnap (SnapShot/32) was selected by Siemens Nixdorf as a 
  9. standard software component distributed with their powerful 
  10. CELSIUS personal workstations! Read more about this in our help 
  11. file.

  13. Some of the more impressive features are listed here; this
  14. is but a partial list. Current users will want to see the list
  15. of new features in the Changes area at the end of this file.

  17. The best way to get to know HyperSnap is to simply use it!
  18.  
  19.   Save your image as a BMP, GIF, or JPEG file. GIFs can 
  20.   optionally be interlaced and include transparent backgrounds,
  21.   and HyperSnap can create progressive JPEGs, perfect for 
  22.   World Wide Web page use. Choose your color depth for BMP 
  23.   captures, too.
  24.  
  25.   Web and Help File Authors, don't miss what HyperSnap can 
  26.   do for you!

  28.   -GIF images can be saved as interlaced files, with transparent 
  29.    backgrounds, and three levels of color reduction.
  30.  
  31.   -JPEGs have save options for a user-defined percentage of 
  32.    output quality, and the "fade-in" format.
  33.  
  34.   -The Quick Save feature is a lifesaver -- just keep on making 
  35.    those captures, without interruption. HyperSnap saves them 
  36.    each to an individual, sequentially named GIF or JPEG file, 
  37.    in the custom format you choose, for your later use.

  39.   -Include the cursor image in your Web Page or Help File image 
  40.    to better display your product shot or call attention to a

  43.   -The Window capture feature makes my day. The feature captures
  44.    whole windows and sections of windows that are automatically 
  45.    highlighted, even little buttons, without squinting at the 
  46.    screen to make sure you get every pixel of the edge of a cap-

  49.   -The built-in Crop feature is great for making final edits to 
  50.    your capture without transferring it to another program. And 
  51.    thankfully, there's an Undo Crop feature to mitigate the 
  52.    "oops!" factor.

  54.   Choose your own HotKeys that quickly capture the entire 
  55.   Desktop, any Rectangle you outline, or the highlighted Window 
  56.   or Client, and automatically repeat the capture every x seconds 
  57.   or by using another HotKey.

  60.   -- you can even trigger new captures every x seconds and have 
  61.   the filename incremented.

  118. INSTALLATION
  119. ------------
  120.  
  121. Install this program by running the self-extracting archive,
  122. HySnap.exe (e.g. double click on its icon). You will be prompted
  123. for the target folder, where HyperSnap files will be installed.
  124. A HyperSnap group (menu) will be created in your Windows 95 Start
  125. menu, together with an "Uninstall" icon that will completely
  126. remove HyperSnap if necessary.

  128. If the uninstall script file (UnHySnap.bat in your Windows 
  129. directory) was accidently deleted, you may still completely 
  130. uninstall HyperSnap by running: 
  131.  
  132.   snap32 -uninstall
  133.  
  134. and then deleting its files and directory manually. To recreate
  135. HyperSnap menu under Windows 95 "Start" button you may run
  136. again HySnap.exe, if you saved it, or just run:
  137.  
  138.   snap32 -install
  139.  
  140. and enter the same directory where HyperSnap is already 
  141. installed.
  142.  
  143. Register your copy of HyperSnap by selecting "Register" under the 
  144. program's Help menu, or from within the help menu.  This program 
  145. is a 'try before you buy' shareware program that relies on your 
  146. support for continued development, and single user registration 
  147. is only $20.00.  When you register HyperSnap you will receive a 
  148. code that enables additional features and become eligible for 
  149. priority support.  You will also be able to obtain free updates 
  150. of the program through our Web page (address below) with which 
  151. you can use your registration code, until the next major release.

  153. To register copies of HyperSnap please use the "Register" program 
  154. usually provided with HyperSnap to make payments.  We use KAGI

  228. Modified the way "Region" capture works - previously the bottom
  229. and right edge, highlighted with rubberbanded region, were not
  230. captured. This makes the capture area one pixel bigger now, and
  231. you don't have to go outside of right and bottom edge of some
  232. object (by 1 pixel) to capture it whole. Also, previusly it was
  233. not possible to capture right and bottom 1 pixel edge of the
  234. screen in region mode, now it works.

  256. 1. The Snapshot menu was changed to "Capture".
  257. "Client" capture was eliminated and only "Window"
  258. item exists. As you move the cursor around the screen in this
  259. mode, you may observe different regions to be captured, as
  260. they are high-lighted by a blinking frame. Window's client
  261. area is captured by default, unless you go with the cursor to
  262. the window border or title.

  264. 2. Added "Quick Print" with the check-mark 
  265. to the "Capture" menu. In addition I added there "Quick Save"
  266. and "Quick Copy" as well as "Include Cursor Image" and
  267. "Restore after Capture" options, also with check-marks.
  268. As you click on Capture menu, you have at a glance all the
  269. options, so you know what will happen.

  271. 3. Region capture was enhanced - it now draws a big
  272. cross-hair for the first point selection, which allows more precise
  273. selection of the region's start point. Also keyboard is now active
  274. in Region mode:
  275.  
  276.   - Arrow keys - move the cross hair or the corner of the region
  277.     by one pixel, for very precise selection. In addition, Ctrl-Arrow
  278.     moves the cursor by 20 pixels, and Shift-Arrow by 5 pixels, if
  279.     you need to move faster without going back to the mouse.
  280.  
  281.   - Escape key will about the Region capture (same as right mouse
  282.     button click) and Enter key will finish it (accept the point), same
  283.     as left mouse button click.
  284.  
  285.   - Insert or plus (+) key will toggle the mouse cursor on and off.
  286.     Sometimes the cursor obscures the corner of your capture,
  287.     where you may want to be very precise.
  288.  
  289.   - If you are in the "Rectangle" mode (second step of the Region
  290.     command, when a rectangle is drawn on the screen, not the
  291.     cross-hair), you may press Tab or Insert keys to switch the
  292.     rectangle corner that you're dragging, e.g. from bottom right
  293.     to top left.
  294.  
  295.   - A help window is displayed on the screen in this mode,
  296.     explaining the keys. This window is moved around as you
  297.     move the cursor, trying to leave the region of interes 
  298.     unobscured.
  299.  
  300. 4. The "Quick Save" (or Auto Save) option was enhanced to
  301. save files in any supported format, not only in BMP. The way
  302. it works is also modified. You may turn off the file incrementing,
  303. so that each capture will overwrite the file with the same name
  304. (requested by several users). Also if you don't turn the timed
  305. auto captures on, the HyperSnap window will actually stay
  306. visible (will not disappear like in ver. 2.55). You may still use
  307. menu choices, in addition to hot keys, which previously was
  308. not possible. If you do not enter any file name in Quick Save
  309. dialog, you'll be prompted for a new file name each time you
  310. do a capture.

  312. 5. Edit menu has "Copy Format" selection - to change the
  313. kind of bitmap that is copied to the clipboard. E.g. your screen
  314. may work in 65000+ color mode, but you want to paste into
  315. some document 16 color bitmaps (often used by Windows
  316. Help authors). You may set the format to be 16 color. 
  317. Previously they had to save the bitmap to a file to reduce
  318. colors. Requested by several users.
  319.  
  320. 6. Crop item added to Edit menu (to cut down the size of 
  321. your bitmap). Also requested by several users. Crop works
  322. in the same way as Capture/Region, except that it's limited
  323. to HyperSnap window. The same hot keys are active. 
  324. The position of the cursor, and size of the cropped area
  325. are displayed in the title bar as you move your mouse 
  326. or move the pointer with arrow keys.

  328. 7. Added Undo Crop to Edit menu.

  330. 8. HyperSnap title bar now displays the size of the pixmap
  331. in it's window. You may also press the left mouse button and
  332. move the mouse over the picture to read coordinates or your
  333. mouse pointer position. This feature may be useful when
  334. creating simple image maps for the WEB.

  342. were read from the registry only after calling File/Print,

  346. default values. Fixed.

  363. save options saved and restored from the registry between
  364. runs. Also auto-save now uses bitmap options setting from
  365. Save As... dialog for the format of bitmap it creates.

  368. Cosmetic changes: fixed focus for file dialogs - was not
  369. set until you clicked on any control. Fixed tab order for

  374. Added JPEG read/write. Fixed GIF output to do dithering
  375. when reducing colors to 256 from hi-color modes (this is
  376. an option on File/Save As dialog). Changed Save dialogs

  378. just one Save As... dialog. In capture window/client mode
  379. added a blinking frame that shows what will be captured
  380. as you move the mouse cursor around.
  381. Other new features - drag and drop BMP, GIF or JPG file from
  382. file manager or Win95 folder to SnapShot/32 window to open and
  383. view it, or start Snap32 with a command line argument to open
  384. that particular file.
  385. Added "Snapshot Options..." item under "Options..." menu.
  386. You can set there "Auto Print" and "Auto Copy" actions
  387. that are taken right after a snapshot is done. The image
  388. will be printed on the default printer and/or copied to
  389. the Windows clipboard. You may also turn off the "Auto
  390. Restore" feature and keep SnapShot/32 window minimized
  391. (in Windows 95 taskbar) after each snapshot.
  392. Added keyboard shortcut keys for Edit/Copy (Ctrl-C), Paste 
  393. (Ctrl-V) and Clear (Ctrl-X) functions.  Also added "Options" 
  394. to Save in BMP format, that allows to select bitmap type (1, 
  395. 4, 8 or 24 bits per pixel).

  399. Fixed two small bugs: in Save GIF, if you did not type
  400. the extension, it used to be BMP, not GIF. Also on the

  414. Fixed a license number problem for long names (over 30
  415. characters). Also moved registry entries for window
  416. position, print setup and hot keys to HKEY_CURRENT_USER
  417. tree, so that each user on a machine could have her/his own

  421. Fixed the printing bug under Windows 95 (it would not print
  422. at all), introduced since ver. 2.34.
  423. Changed the way license numbers are generated. Until now the
  424. numbers were based on the name of the machine, where the
  425. program was running. Now they are based on the name of the
  426. owner, so that people could use SnapShot/32 on several
  427. machines. Still the "single user license" number must be
  428. entered separately on each machine, but since it is tied to
  429. the owner name, one can install it e.g. on her/his desktop
  430. and laptop computer independently. The name of the owner
  431. appears in the "Help/About" box. People who registered
  432. earlier and have licenses based on machine names can upgrade
  433. to a "single user license" at no cost by sending me an email
  434. message or a letter containing their machine name and old
  435. license number. The old licenses will still work.

  437. Ver. 2.34, released 1995.07.30
  438. Bug fix: SnapShot/32 saves its position and window size on
  439. exit, and when restarted, its window is positioned as
  440. before.  This created problem when the saved position was
  441. completely off-screen so the window was not visible.  Fixed
  442. by checking for any corner of SnapShot/32 window being off-
  443. screen, and if so - repositioning the window to the center
  444. of the screen.  Also modified the message that appears if
  445. SnapShot/32 can not register its hot keys, e.g.  due to
  446. another program (sometimes another copy of SnapShot/32)
  447. using them.  This message is less cryptic now, explains the
  448. reason and suggests changing the keys with "Configure Hot
  449. Keys" dialog under "Options" menu. Also fixed: "Enable hot
  450. keys" check box in hot keys setup dialog was not doing
  451. anything.

  454. Added ability to read GIF files, but only in registered
  455. version. You may read-in GIF file to view it, print it,
  456. translate to BMP file or change the GIF file attributes like
  457. interlaced mode and transparent background.

  460. Working on a MAP file for a GIF image for one of my WEB
  461. pages I needed to read coordinates of points on the bitmap.

  466. There seems to be a bug in Win95 betas - when asking how
  467. many colors the display supports ( GetDeviceCaps( dhdc,
  468. BITSPIXEL ) call ) it says "2" even if it is in 16 color
  469. mode. For this reason the bitmaps or GIFs saved in 16 color
  470. mode were black and white only. Worked around this bug by
  471. forcing 16 colors always if less colors are reported.

  474. Added hot key configuration dialog.Added "Repeat last
  475. capture" function and hot-key. Added the "Auto capture and
  476. save" feature - save pre-defined screen area to a file every
  477. time the "Repeat last capture" hot key is pressed, or a

  479. included" option. Fixed a problem with hot-keys, which did
  480. not operate under NT 3.5 if SnapShot/32 window was not in
  481. foreground.
