PLAYPOLY 1.0
A Polyphonic Player for VOC, WAV, CMF, and MID Files
Written by Tim Kilgore
Copyright 1993, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
Release Date: 11-11-93
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION -
PlayPoly is a polyphonic player for VOC, WAV, CMF, and MID files. If you
are unfamiliar with the term "polyphonic", this means that more than one
sound can be played at once. PlayPoly accomplishes this by mixing the
sounds in real-time.
PlayPoly can play up to 8 VOC or WAV files at one time while it plays a
CMF or MID file as background music. You can also change the play back
speed of VOC/WAV files (Arnold S. could be make to sound like a chipmunk
singer and vice versa) and control the volume level of the background
music file.
When PlayPoly was designed, it was intended to serve as a programmer's
tool, allowing a programmer to hear sound effects being played over
a music file. While it serves this purpose nicely, it also turned
out to be a lot of fun to play with.
DISCLAIMER <sigh> -
BY YOUR USE OF THIS PROGRAM, YOU AGREE NOT TO HOLD THE AUTHOR, TIM
KILGORE, RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES, REAL OR IMAGINED, THAT OCCUR
THROUGH THE USE OR MISUSE OF PLAYPOLY.EXE. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH
THESE TERMS, DELETE PLAYPOLY.EXE AND ALL RELATED TEXT OR DATA FILES
IMMEDIATELY.
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS -
PlayPoly should be used on a 286-12mhz class machine or better. Slower
machines do not have the processor power to use this application.
PlayPoly requires a SoundBlaster or compatible. It makes use of both
the Adlib FM music synthesizer and the SoundBlaster's digital sound
processor (DSP). Detection of both devices is automatic.
PlayPoly requires approximately 260K of memory to load. The memory
requirements of PlayPoly vary depending upon how much music and sound
data you have loaded. A status line will keep you appraised of how
much memory you have remaining for loading files.
The use of a mouse is optional, but recommended.
LIMITATIONS -
PlayPoly will not load any file in excess of 64K. (Actually, if you
want to be picky, the true limit is 65535 bytes, 1 byte short of 64K.)
PlayPoly will notify you if the file you are trying to load is too
large.
If you get 4 or more VOC/WAV files playing at once, you may hear
unexpected static or a crackling sound. This is an indicator that
you are now past the envelope of what your PC can process. The faster
your machine, the less likely you are to have problems of this nature.
MIDI files that PlayPoly can use are limited to Type 0 and Type 1.
VOC files with silence blocks are a problem for PlayPoly. If you
find a VOC file that will not play correctly (such as FROG.VOC or
TV4.VOC which are a part of Creative Lab's SoundBlaster software),
it probably has a silence block somewhere in the recording. (Silence
blocks are far from common, and should not pose a major problem.)
USING PLAYPOLY -
PlayPoly is an easy to use program and this section of the
documentation will be brief as a result. There is only one feature
that is not readily obvious and we'll discuss it now.
The loading of VOC and WAV files is a little tricky. If you are a
keyboard user, press TAB until the button that you want to load a
file into is highlighted. Now press "L" (case is not important)
and the FILE OPEN menu will appear.
Mouse users can use the mouse to load VOC and WAV files. To do this,
simply click on the word "[ Empty ]" or the file name beneath the
button you want to load a file into. The FILE OPEN menu will now
appear.
VOLUME CONTROL OF BACKGROUND MUSIC -
You can control the volume of the background music file by moving the
slider on the horizontal bar in the background music section. How
much you can increase the volume here depends upon the original volume
settings of the music file. You will find that if you increase the
volume level too much, all or some of the instruments being played will
suddenly become silent. This isn't a bug, just decrease the volume
level and the sound will come back.
PITCH CONTROL OF VOC AND WAV FILES -
The horizontal slider under each SFX button is a pitch control. When
you change the pitch for recorded voices, it sounds as though the
voice sounds like it is playing faster. If you change the pitch for
a recorded music tone, you'll find that the results are more predictable
and more pleasing. (Try changing the pitch for DING.WAV or CHORD.WAV,
files that accompany MS-Windows 3.1. You'll see what I mean.)
REGISTERING PLAYPOLY -
If you find yourself using PlayPoly on a regular basis, I'd appreciate
it if you would take the time to register this program. It's really
fairly painless.
The registration fee for PlayPoly is a single postcard. The theme
for the postcard sound be something humorous or a famous landmark
located where you live. (Don't even bother sending 3x5 note cards,
ok?)

ABOUT PLAYPOLY -
PlayPoly was written using Microsoft's VISUAL BASIC FOR MS-DOS (VBDOS)
Professional Edition.
All sound processing was provided by Mystic Software's WORX+, an FM
Synthesis and Digitized Sound Programmers Toolkit. (Worx is intended
primarily for C and Pascal programmers, but it can obviously be made
to work with other languages.) If you are interested in Worx, contact
Mystic Software at 510-865-9189 (voice).
