  43. RV2 is a Windows application combining unique database features with
  44. hypergraphics in a hybrid environment for viewing, indexing and
  45. enriching information. Within a single interface, you can:
  46.  
  47.  * view and index existing image and text files
  48.  * freely mix different types of data in one set
  49.  * easily add annotation and hotspots
  50.  * search and browse intuitively
  51.  * generate simple data display forms
  52.  
  53. A DIFFERENT DATABASE
  54.  
  55. The essence of  RV2Æs database is flexibility. ItÆs there to let you
  56. bring together diverse objects in one dataset without being constrained
  57. by a strict hierarchy or by a set of object classes and it lets you
  58. easily expand the scope of a dataset later. You can impose a structure,
  59. but itÆs not mandatory.

  61.  * Each object can have any number of properties.
  62.  * Each object can have multiple values of the same property. (Three
  63.    phone numbers ? No problem.)
  64.  * You can create add and edit property names and values at any time.
  65.  * Properties arenÆt explicity typed as integers, strings, or dates,
  66.    etc..

  68. SEARCHING
  69.  
  70. RV2 includes a 'traditional' query interface with which you can search
  71. for objects by stringing together a potentially complex sequence of
  72. properties and operators (AND  OR  >=  etc.). You can also embed
  73. contextual operations (ægo and get the latest version of...Æ) within a
  74. stored query.
  75.  
  76. But the program has a unique interactive alternative - the Filter - in
  77. which you can gradually slim down a list of objects by simply selecting
  78. property names and values from lists. The lists only ever contain
  79. relevant properties: as the list of objects gets shorter, so do the
  80. lists of properties which you can search on. So...
  81.  
  82.   * you donÆt need to be familiar with a particular datasetÆs
  83.     terminology before you can use it
  84.   * youÆre never left without any matching objects
  85.  
  86. VIEWERS
  87.  
  88. Each object in RV2 can have a Background and a Foreground. The
  89. background is an external file - text, a bitmap or a vector plot (such
  90. as a graph) - which RV2 displays with itÆs own file viewers. Supported
  91. formats include plain text, Window Write files (with embedded object
  92. display), BMP, PCX, GIF, Targa, TIFF, WMF and HPGL. A range of built-in
  93. dithering options allows you to display images such as photos usefully,
  94. even on a 16 colour or mono display.

  96. Moreover, when you register your copy of RV2 you'll receive a copy of
  97. the Image Stream VBX, which can be used with RV2 to display a dozen
  98. extra formats, including Photo CD, CGM and 2D DXF.

  100. ANNOTATION & HOTSPOTS
  101.  
  102. Foregrounds are created and stored within RV2, and can be superimposed
  103. on backgrounds to provide annotation (red-lining) and hotspots. They can
  104. also be used as common forms simply for displaying object properties.
  105.  
  106. The hotspots on foregrounds can provide direct links or search-based
  107. jumps - for example, on an active map you could click on a state to
  108. display local detail or you might use that click to fetch all the
  109. information objects available for that state. The point is, of course,
  110. that when you add extra items about the particular state you donÆt have
  111. to update the hotspot link definitions.

  113. APPLICATIONS
  114.  
  115. RV2 was originally conceived for engineering designers, who need to pull
  116. together material from a lot of different sources (drawings, analysis,
  117. documentation, photos, component catalogues, etc.). But it has been
  118. developed, from the start, to be MUCH more widely applicable.

  120. Here are just a few of the areas where it could be used:

  122.  * personnel directories with active building plans
  123.  
  124.  * delivery of CAL (Computer Aided Learning) material
  125.  
  126.  * electronic maintenance manuals
  127.  
  128.  * test data archives
  129.  
  130.  * tourist maps and holiday brochures

  132.  * product catalogues
  133.

  137. 3. RESTRICTIONS ON DISTRIBUTION
  138. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

  140. Shareware versions of RV2 may be freely distributed, subject to the
  141. following restrictions:
  142.  
  143.  * RV2 must be distributed without modification, in its entirety.
  144.  
  145.  * RV2 may not be distributed by any for-profit entity which fails to
  146.    disclose the following points somewhere in their literature:
  147.  
  148.    o The fee paid by the customer for an evaluation diskette is a dis-
  149.      tribution fee, and does not cover the cost of the program itself.
  150.      
  151.    o Additional payment to the Author is required if a program is used
  152.      beyond the evaluation period prescribed by the Author.
  153.  
  154.    Shareware is "Try-Before-You-Buy" software, it is not free.
  155.  
  156.  * RV2 may be incorporated in CD-ROM collections provided that the
  157.    complete package is included, and it is made clear that it is NOT
  158.    "Free Software".

  160.  * RV2 is not to be used as an enticement to purchase another product
  161.    without the explicit consent of the Author.
  162.  
  163.  * RV2 is not to be packaged for sale with its reference manual, 
  164.    or other supporting documentation pre-printed for the end-user.

  166.  * RV2 is not to be "rented" or leased.
  167.   
  168. These distribution restrictions apply to anyone who wishes to distribute
  169. RV2, whether they be commercial vendors, user groups, BBS operators, or
  170. individuals.

  172. All parties are hereby given permission to capture screen shots of RV2
  173. for use in catalogues or newsletters listing or reviewing the product.
  174. Please identify the image in some way as being from RV2.
  175.  
  176. If the version of the program that you have is more than 12 months old,
  177. please contact the author before distributing the package, since it is
  178. likely that a more recent version of the program will be available.
