Galleria and Galleria/CM
------------------------
Version 2.2 - January 24, 1995
DESCRIPTION:
Galleria and Galleria/CM together provide a sophisticated yet easy to
use environment for the display, editing, printing, conversion, scanning
and capture of bitmapped images for 32-bit Intel-based systems using IBM
OS/2 2.1, 2.11 or 3.0, or OS/2 for Windows. Both are high-performance
tools which exploit OS/2 features such as large memory space and multiple
threads. As Presentation Manager applications, they feature ease of use
and full interoperability with other applications on the desktop.
Galleria is general purpose tool for the management of bitmapped images.
It provides a window for the display of images at varying resolutions
on all OS/2-supported display subsystems (up to 24-bit). Images can be
read from the OS/2 clipboard or from disk in numerous formats. Direct
support is provided for input from HP ScanJet desktop scanners. Once
loaded, the displayed image can be edited (cropped, resized, rotated etc.)
and converted to monochrome or grayscale. The modified image can be
transferred to other applications via the clipboard or saved on disk in a
different format. High quality monochrome or color printed output can
also be generated.
Galleria reads and writes common bitmap file formats including BMP, JPEG,
PCX, Targa, TIFF and WPG, plus OS/2 metafiles. Full support is provided
for the import of Kodak Photo CD and Pro Photo CD images.
Additional features include drag/drop support, a file search function,
multi-level undo/redo, filters, the ability to create saved lists for
screen shows, a floating zoom window and limited DDE capability.
Galleria/CM (Capture Module) can take a snapshot of the current OS/2
desktop contents and copy the resultant image to the clipboard, disk or
printer. Galleria can also be invoked automatically for post-processing
of the captured image. An options dialog enables selection of either the
full desktop, window or region for the capture.
Galleria/CM operations can be controlled from either an icon on the
desktop or the keyboard (with the Print Screen key).
Online manuals for both Galleria and Galleria/CM are provided as part of
the package.

LICENSING:
License details must be entered when the software is first started. These
will be provided when the software is licensed.
A limited function demonstration of this software is available by entering
"DEMO" in the license name field when the software is started. The saving
of files to disk and printing will be disabled, nor will personal
preferences be retained across sessions.
Note: upgrades are available to licensees of 1.x versions of this software.
Please see the UPGRADES section in the ORDER.DOC file.
INSTALLATION:
To install the software, online documentation etc. you must run the
INSTALL.EXE utility provided. This graphical utility will prompt for
installation options and destination. All tasks performed as part of the
installation process will be displayed in a scrollable log. This utility
can also be used to fully de-install the software.
The installation process can be classified as one of the following three
types:
o Individual
This applies when you have an INDIVIDUAL license and wish to install
the software on a standalone machine. For this type of install you must
elect to have the install utility copy files to the specified
directories. On completion, you should have a new folder on your
desktop with icons for Galleria etc. You can then start the software by
double-clicking on the required icon. The first time you start Galleria
or Galleria/CM you will be prompted for your license details. These
will be preserved across subsequent sessions or installs.
o Server
If you have a CORPORATE license you can install the software on a LAN
server for use by multiple clients (subject to the maximum number of
users permitted by your license). The install process is similar to
that for an Individual install above. The difference is that when you
start the software and enter license details, a file named
GALLERIA.LAN will be written to disk in the same directory as the
executables. (You must have write permission to this directory to
enable this file to be created.) When you start the software from a
client on the LAN, it will look for this file and license details will
be propagated automatically. Note that the GALLERIA.LAN file will be
invalidated if moved to another disk or server and will need to be
recreated.
o Client
After a copy of the software licensed for CORPORATE use has been
installed on the server (and the GALLERIA.LAN file created) you can
then proceed to install the software on clients attached to the LAN.
For a client install you should deselect the option to "Copy files to
directories", instead entering directories of those on the server
where the software resides. The install will then create icons
pointing to the server copy of the software. You will not be prompted
for license details (unless the server copy has been incorrectly
installed or the GALLERIA.LAN file has been invalidated).
For installation of a copy of software licensed for CORPORATE use on
a standalone machine, proceed as per the Server install above. The
GALLERIA.LAN file should be retained.
For an "unlimited use" CORPORATE license, a customized copy of the
Galleria executables is supplied. You will not be prompted for license
details as these stored permanently in the executables. You are free to
install the software on workstations or servers as required.
Note: if you have a previous version of this software installed, you must
ensure that old versions of the library (BITWAREx.DLL) files are deleted.
HP SCANJET SUPPORT:
Included is (optional) support for the HP ScanJet family of desktop
scanners when attached to an OS/2 supported SCSI adapter (no support is
currently provided for the HP-supplied controller card).
To enable scanner support you must manually add the following statements
to CONFIG.SYS:
BASEDEV=OS2SCSI.DMD
DEVICE=d:\directory\BITWARE9.SYS
changing the directory name in the DEVICE statement as appropriate.
Turn the scanner on and re-boot OS/2. Scan options should now appear
in the Galleria File menu.
DISPLAY DRIVER PROBLEMS:
Galleria, as a graphics-intensive application, demands a high level of
support from display drivers. It is recommended that you ensure that you
have the latest version of display driver installed for your display
adapter type prior to installation.
Below are fixes or bypasses for common problems that may be experienced:
o Failure with SYS317x/SYS318x etc. when loading first image with VGA and
SVGA drivers. Replacement IBMVGA32.DLL and IBMDEV32.DLL modules are
included in the floppy-based version of this software in PJ10311.ZIP.
These modules are also available for download from the OS2AVEN forum
on CompuServe (as GALPTF.ZIP). Alternatively, contact IBM Support
requesting the fix for APAR PJ10311.
This problem has been fixed in OS/2 3.0.
o Scrolling errors with 8514/A, S3 and ATI drivers. Bad data may be
displayed in the scrolled area or even outside of Zoom window. This
may also result in lockups on S3 systems. Contact IBM Support
requesting the fix for APAR PJ12059.
For ATI cards, contact ATI Technologies for a fix.
o Miscellaneous errors (including exceptions, incorrect colors or
scrolling problems) with other drivers. This is normally an indication
that the display driver currently installed does not fully support
the default "direct" paint mode used by Galleria. These problems may
disappear if you change the driver settings to use a different color
depth. If not, you should be able to bypass the problem by setting the
"Paint directly" cutoff value to the maximum in the Galleria
Preferences dialog. For a permanent fix, contact the vendor of your
display adapter for an updated driver.
PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS:
Memory requirements will depend on the size of the image being processed
and level of edits required. In most cases performance can be improved by
setting the pre-allocated size of your SWAPPER.DAT file to a large value
(eg. 16MB). The SWAPPATH statement in CONFIG.SYS would look something
like this:
SWAPPATH=d:\ 4096 16384
DDE TOOLKIT
A DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) toolkit is available which demonstrates how
to drive Galleria from your own application for the loading and display
of images. The DDE interface implemented is not intended to enable
Galleria to be used as a general purpose server, but specifically to add
image handling capabilities to other applications lacking this support.
The toolkit consists of the full C language source, IBM C Set++ makefile
etc. of a simple OS/2 2.x PM client. You are free to model your own
client on this sample program.
The sample client source is included in the floppy based version of this
software in as DDE.ZIP. This is also available for download from the OS2AVEN
forum on CompuServe (as GALDDE.ZIP).
