  3. Welcome to Catz!
  4.  
  5. Ordering Catz for yourself or for a friend is simple - either go to your 
  6. local software retailer or call us directly at 1-800-48-ADOPT.

  10. Dogz (TM) are the very first Petz to live on your computer, giving you 
  11. the joys of owning a dog without needing a pooper scooper! Dogz live on 
  12. your desktop where they can scamper across applications, play games like 
  13. keep away, fetch and chase, or nap in the corner of your screen while 
  14. you're working.
  15.  
  16. Oddballz (TM) are the latest generation of Computer Petz.  Like Catz and 
  17. Dogz, Oddballz live and play with you on your computer desktop.  However, 
  18. Oddballz are different from anything you've ever seen before--with strange 
  19. new habits, weird mutations and surprising reactions for you to discover.  
  20. Start with seven hilarious breeds of Oddballz and then collect more off 
  21. the World Wide Web!

  23. You can have Dogz, Catz and Oddballz installed on your computer, but you can
  24. only have one active at a time.

  30. HOW TO INSTALL CATZ:
  31. - Run SETUP.EXE
  32. - This will install a copy of Catz to your hard drive.

  35. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  36.  
  37. 486DX, 50 MHz or higher
  38. Windows 3.1 Enhanced Mode or WinÆ95
  39. 15 MB hard disk space, 4 MB RAM required
  40. WinÆ95 requires at least 16 color video card and monitor
  41. Windows 3.1 requires at least 256 color video card and monitor
  42. Optional: Windows-compatible sound card and speakers

  46. CATZ QUICK START
  47.  
  48. Getting Started
  49.   - After you install Catz, you'll see a "Catz" icon in a Windows Program 
  50.     Group (or under the "Programs" item of the START menu in Windows '95) 
  51.     named "Yourname's Catz" (where "yourname" is your first name).
  52.   - Start Catz by double-clicking on the icon named "Catz" (or simply 
  53.     selecting the "Catz" item in the Start menu under Windows '95).
  54.   - This will open the Catz Adoption Kit.
  55.   - You can pet and play with any of the five Catz breeds and decide which 
  56.     one is best for you!
  57.   - When you decide which one you want to adopt, click the "Adopt Me 
  58.     Now" button.
  59.  
  60. In the Adoption Kit you can pet and play with five different breeds of Catz.  
  61. Once you have adopted your own Catz, you will have many other things to do.  
  62. You will be able to feed and play with your Catz.  You will be able to groom 
  63. them to change their color. Your Catz will take CatNapz, protecting your 
  64. computer from monitor burn-in and file snoops.  Over time, your adopted 
  65. Kittenz will grow up to be a full-size Catz.

  69. IN THE ADOPTION KIT TRY THIS...
  70.  
  71. Picking up your Catz
  72.   - To pick up Catz and move them to a new location, click the right mouse 
  73.     button while the cursor is anywhere over the Catz.
  74.   - Don't worry - this won't hurt it.  Releasing the mouse button will drop 
  75.     your Catz safely to the desktop.
  76.   - In the Adoption Kit, you can drop the Kittenz back on top of its basket 
  77.     and then click on a new basket to play with a different Kittenz.
  78.  
  79. Catz love to be petted!
  80.   - You can pet your Catz at any time.  To do this, simply click and hold the 
  81.     left mouse button while the cursor is over the Catz.  The cursor will change 
  82.     to a "petting hand."
  83.   - Stroke the Catz with the cursor while holding down the left mouse 
  84.     button.
  85.   - If you pet your Catz just right and long enough, it might roll over to let 
  86.     you scratch its stomach, purr, or even go to sleep.

  88. Sleeping
  89.   - If you leave Catz alone for several minutes, they usually nod off to sleep.   
  90.     You may even catch them dreaming!
  91.   - A nice way to wake up Catz is to pet them while they're sleeping.

  95. AUTOMATICALLY LAUNCHING CATZ AT STARTUP (Windows 95)
  96.   - If you follow these steps, Catz will automatically launch every time you
  97.     start your computer:
  98.         1)  Open the Catz directory so you can see the Catz program icon.
  99.         2)  Click on the Catz program icon with the right mouse button, 
  100.             and choose "Create Shortcut".
  101.         3)  Leave this window open and visible on your desktop.
  102.             In a separate window, open the following directory:
  103.             Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp.
  104.     4)  Drag the shortcut of Catz from Step 2 into the StartUp window.

  108. IMPORTANT NOTE:
  109.   - Catz love to run around on your computer screen.
  110.   - Whenever you let a Catz loose on the screen, you will not be able to click 
  111.     on any other application until you...
  112.  
  113.     1)  Return Catz to playpen mode, or
  114.     2)  Quit Catz, or
  115.     3)  Press ALT-TAB to switch to another application
  116.

  119. KNOWN MISBEHAVIORS ("TROUBLESHOOTING")
  120.  
  121. "I'm having trouble putting Kittenz back into their baskets."
  122.   - Make sure your cursor hand is positioned over the right basket when you drop 
  123.     the Kittenz off.  
  124.   - Or, you can click on that Kittenz' basket and wait for the Kittenz
  125.     to jump back into it.
  126.  
  127. "My Catz disappears from the screen."
  128.   - Like a real cat, your Catz will sometimes be busy with its own projects.
  129.   - Try double-clicking the mouse to call your Catz back (it may come, it may 
  130.     not).
  131.  
  132. "My Catz sometimes freezes on the screen."
  133.   - Catz need to behave well, and make sure they don't slow down your 
  134.     system.  If an important application needs to control your computer for a 
  135.     few seconds, your Catz will hold still until that application lets go.  
  136.     It's nothing to worry about!
  137.  
  138. "The Catz Playpen window has changed colors."
  139.   - If you change your Display resolution or color palette while Catz is 
  140.     running, your Catz colors may shift undesirably.  To fix this, simply quit and 
  141.     relaunch Catz.
  142.   - Also, when running on a system with only 256 colors, opening or 
  143.     selecting another application can sometimes cause Catz colors to change (the 
  144.     programs are competing for the same palette colors).  If your Catz turns black, 
  145.     changes colors in an unexpected way, or the Playpen background colors become 
  146.     distorted, try minimizing the Playpen window and re-opening it.
  147.   - If this does not work, close and re-open Catz and the problem should go 
  148.     away.
  149.  
  150. "My Catz color changed and looked awful during the screensaver."
  151.   - If you are running certain other applications and the CatNapz screensaver 
  152.     activates, sometimes the Catz will only have 16 colors instead of its 
  153.     normal 256 colors.  With only 16 colors, a Catz can look quite strange.
  154.     There is no need to be alarmed over this.  Your Catz will regain its normal 
  155.     appearance in the Catz application, and in the screensaver under most 
  156.     conditions. 
  157.  
  158. "CatNapz requires a password, but I did not set one!"
  159.   - If you had already set a password for another screen saver, you may find 
  160.     that this password is still required for CatNapz.
  161.  
  162. "I'm not hearing any sounds."
  163.   - To hear your Catz, you need a SoundBlaster(tm) compatible sound card 
  164.     installed.
  165.   - Remember that if Catz is ever minimized or another application is opened 
  166.     on top of Catz, your Catz will keep quiet.  
  167.     Only when Catz is the foremost application will sounds be heard.
  168.  
  169. "The Playpen window sometimes appears on screen over my screen saver."
  170.   - If you set the Playpen window to be "Always on Top" and Catz is left 
  171.     running in Full Screen mode, on some computers, the Playpen window will be 
  172.     visible above other screen savers when they appear on screen.  
  173.     To eliminate this problem, either turn off the "Always on Top" setting or 
  174.     be sure to put your Catz back into the Playpen when you are finished playing 
  175.     with them.
  176.  
  177. "Does Installing Catz affect my system files?"
  178.   - The files that come with PF.Magic Catz are as system-friendly as possible.
  179.     Catz won't crawl into your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files and mess them up.
  180.  
  181. "Windows or Catz puts up an error message saying 'File Not Found' or 'Cannot Load'".
  182.   - This is probably because the file really isn't there.  Verify the file in 
  183.     question exists.  If it is truly missing, reinstall Catz.
  184.   - This could be the result of an error occuring during installation.  
  185.     If you had an error during installation, try reinstalling Catz.
  186.   - Often, Windows will display this message if you are low on memory.  
  187.     Try quitting applications and/or restarting your computer to free-up memory.
  188.   - If none of the above work, and the file is present, the missing file may in 
  189.     turn require additional files to be loaded.  For example, CATZDLL.DLL requires 
  190.     CTL3DV2.DLL.  If the latter is not present, Windows will complain about the 
  191.     former.  This situation is difficult to diagnose because there's no indication 
  192.     as to what is the missing file.  Try reinstalling Catz.
