This document describes the Rage Pro overclocker as supplied in the Rage Pro Tweaker. If you are using Notepad to view this document, you should maximize the window and turn on WordWrapping.
It is very important to note that the use of the overclocker can damage your hardware! Overclocking carries a risk and it will probably reduce the life of the components in your graphics card.
You should only use this utility IF you accept the responsiblity for this and realise that any damage is not the fault of Neil Banfield, anyone who told you about this utility, the web master of the server you downloaded this software from, the company you bought your computer from, or ATI technologies.
About the Rage Pro Tweaker
--------------------------
As a follow-up to the Rage 2 Tweaker, I have released the Rage Pro tweaker. This is more advanced than the Rage 2 tweaker as it supports features like overclocking and some other direct access options.
Please see RagePro.txt for more information
Which chips does this work on?
------------------------------
This utility was designed for an ATI Rage Pro based card. All ATI Rage Pro based cards (with SGRAM) have a memory speed of 100Mhz and an engine speed of 75Mhz by default. These are the values the restore option sets the memory and engine speeds to.
If you have an Xpert XL (EDO RAM) then you may find this overclocker causes your screen to become scrambled. BEFORE applying settings click the button to stop it autoapplying on bootup. Otherwise if you do have a problem then you would have problems starting Windows. If you have not done this & cannot start Windows, just delete aticlock.ini from your Windows directory
Owners of cards based around the ATI Rage II+, II, I and mach64 based cards may find this utility works on their cards too. The utility attempts to find out the default values for your card but sometimes it gets it wrong. The engine settings do not apply to these cards. The older the card is, the lower the values you should try. If in doubt find out the default speeds before using this utility.
If your graphics chip is on the motherboard then you might want to find out if your memory and engine speed has been changed for your computer. Major manufacturers might use faster or slower ram which would affect the overclocker.
As a general rule DO NOT EXCEED the following values
MEMORY - Default speed * 1.15
ENGINE - Default speed * 1.25
Why Overclock?
--------------
The average user probably has no real need to overclock any part of their computer. However, as games have become more power hungry and demand more from your computer, some people try and find that extra bit of performance from their computers.
Overclocking your graphics card works by increasing the speed of various components in your card. On the ATI Rage Pro this is the memory and engine speed. By a bit of playing around you can change the settings decided by ATI to some faster values.
By making the parts of your 3D card run faster, the games you play will also run slightly faster IF your CPU is not the bottleneck.
Why not Overclock?
------------------
Overclocking means increasing the speed of components. This makes those components give off more heat and potentially reduce their life. This may result in your graphics card not lasting as long as it should. This might be acceptable to you as the rate at which 3D cards become obsolete is very fast. So having your card fail after a year or 2 is a fair exchange for getting more speed out of it while it is not obsolete.
How to use the overclocker
--------------------------
The overclocker comes as part of the Rage Pro Tweaker. This has a property page which appears in display properties. From this you can change the speed of the memory and engine. However, if you want to use the Rage Pro Overclocker from DOS or in a batch file then the following information may be of use to you.
Syntax: RageClk.exe mem {Speed} chip {Speed}
So you can change 2 memory values from the command line
mem = The memory speed. This takes values from 59 - 115 (Mhz)
chip = The engine speed. This takes values from 60 - 105 (Mhz)
You must specify BOTH values. Use a value of 0 to not adjust it
Example: RageClk mem 100 chip 0
This has set the memory to 100Mz and the engine speed has not been changed
The utility may not work in a window under Windows 95 or 98. It should automatically switch to fullscreen when run and when finished it will return you to a window IF you were running in a window before. However, this may not work in all cases. If it does not switch for a short time then you should manually make the MS-DOS window fullscreen before running it.
Maximum Values
--------------
When using an ATI Rage Pro based card the following are the maximum values you should ever even consider
Memory = 115Mhz (15Mhz more)
Engine = 100 - 105Mhz (25-30 Mhz more)
I have not tried with these values so I cannot say if they work. However if you find any other overclocker for the ATi Rage Pro that lets you exceed these values then I should point out that these maximal values came from a trusted source and exceeding them may gain little but cause major damage
Distribution
------------
This overclocker may not be distributed separately from the Rage Pro Tweaker as supplied by Neil Banfield. Downloads from http://studenti.lboro.ac.uk/~conb/rage/
