  6. COMPAQ CUTS PRICE ON LTE/286

  8. On May 1 Compaq reduced the price of its LTE/286 products.  The price of the
  9. LTE/286 with a 20 MB hard disk was reduced from $4,499 to $3,999, and the 40 MB
  10. version was reduced from $4,999 to $4,799.  This pricing still allows Compaq to
  11. make significant margins, since the cost to manufacture the 20 MB LTE/286 is
  12. about $819 (according to Apple's Materials Engineering Department).

  14. The LTE (8086-based) and LTE/286 have been very successful thus far.
  15. Storeboard estimates that Compaq sold 6,113 LTE/286s through dealers in
  16. February.

  18. Some people speculate that Compaq lowered prices to clear out inventory in
  19. preparation for announcing another laptop, perhaps a 386sx-based LTE.  Another
  20. possibility, which we think is more likely, is that Compaq cut prices in
  21. response to Toshiba's T1200XE and pending competition from Sharp and cloners.

  23. Toshiba is aggressively marketing against Compaq's LTE/286 by describing the
  24. advantages the 20 MB 286-based T1200XE provides over the LTE/286 for a price of
  25. only $3,999.  Interestingly, that is the new price of the 20 MB LTE/286.

  27. Sharp has announced a four pound 286 computer (three pounds lighter than the
  28. LTE/286) which will have VGA graphics (compared to the LTE/286's CGA).  Sharp
  29. stated that its 20 MB machine would be priced under $4,000 when it becomes
  30. available in June.

  32. Additionally, it is rumored that there are as many as 10 Far East companies
  33. making LTE clones.  Some of these clones are expected to become available soon,
  34. at prices much lower than Compaq's.

  36. The implication to Apple is that the notebook/laptop market is experiencing
  37. significant sales growth, which is fostering tremendous competition.  This
  38. tremendous competition indicates that the price/performance of these mobile
  39. machines will improve dramatically this year.
