  8. SETTING YOUR COMPUTER'S BIOS 
  9.  
  10. To use the new drive, you must change your BIOS settings.  Use these customized
  11. instructions as a checklist, checking off each step as you complete it.

  14. Booting To Your New Hard Drive
  15.  
  16. Your original boot partition has been copied to your new hard drive.  If you
  17. are going to boot to your new drive you will have to perform one of the
  18. following:

  20.    * Follow the instructions below for information on swapping your new
  21.      drive with your original boot drive.
  22.    * If your BIOS supports booting to drives other then the primary master
  23.      drive, you can set the BIOS to boot to your new drive.  See your BIOS
  24.      documentation for instructions on how to do this.

  36. DRIVE PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS
  37.  
  38. For easy installation, use these customized instructions as a checklist, 
  39. checking off each step as you complete it. 
  40.  
  41. The following instructions have been customized for your system.  In addition 
  42. to these instructions, you may need to refer to your computer owner's manual 
  43. for information specific to your system, such as System Setup. 
  44.

  46. FOLLOW THESE IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS:
  47. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  48.    * Handle the disk drive ONLY by its frame.  NEVER touch the connectors or 
  49.      any part of the circuit board. 
  50.    * DO NOT apply pressure or attach labels to the circuit board or top cover.
  51.    * ALWAYS turn your computer off before beginning the installation and when 
  52.      adding, removing or changing jumpers on any drive.
  53.    * Although switched off, ALWAYS keep your computer plugged into an 
  54.      electrical outlet with an earth ground.  This minimizes the possibility of 
  55.      damage from static discharge.
  56.    * Wear a grounded wrist strap if possible.  Attach the wrist strap to the 
  57.      metal chassis of your computer.  DO NOT install in areas with 
  58.      static-inducing carpets.
  59.    * Back up the disk drive's data before starting.  
  60.    * ALWAYS note the orientation of all cables before disconnecting them.  Some 
  61.      cables can be reattached in positions that don't make a proper 
  62.      connection.
  63.    * You may need a Phillips screwdriver, needle-nose pliers and an unused 
  64.      power connector.

  68. ( ) RUNNING THE SYSTEM SETUP PROGRAM 
  69.  
  70. To change your computers settings, you must enter the 'Setup' or 'CMOS Setup'
  71. program of your computer and change the information.  There are several ways
  72. to enter the setup, depending on your computer make and model.  Usually on the
  73. initial power up, there will be a message stating 'Press DEL to enter Setup' or
  74. something similar.  It may be necessary to press the key quickly, as the boot
  75. sequence may continue on momentarily. 
  76.  
  77. Check your computer or motherboard manual for the correct key combination, or
  78. look for one of the following phrases or something similar with the word 
  79. 'Setup' in it. 
  80.  
  81. - Hit DEL if you want to run Setup 
  82. - Press F1 to enter Setup 
  83. - Press F2 to enter Setup 
  84. - Press and hold CTRL-ALT-ESC to begin System Setup 
  85. - To enter setup: Boot to a DOS prompt, and press CTRL-ALT-Enter 
  86. - Press CTRL-ALT-S to enter Setup 
  87.  
  88. If you cannot determine how to enter the System Setup program, consult your 
  89. computer's manual or contact the manufacturer.

  94. After swapping drives you must enable the secondary controller in order to use
  95. the partitions on the secondary drive.  Refer to the following instructions for
  96. information about entering the System Setup program.

  101. NOTE: Some BIOSes will not allow you to change the settings for your new drive
  102. until after it is installed.  If your system does not allow you to configure
  103. settings until after your drive is installed, refer to this section after you 
  104. have installed your drive.

  108.    * Reboot your computer. 
  109.    * Watch the screen - as your computer starts up - for a message describing how to
  110.      run the System Setup program (also called BIOS or CMOS setup).  This is usually
  111.      done by pressing the DELETE, ESC or F1 keys. 
  112.    * Press the appropriate key to enter the System Setup program. 
  113.  
  114. NOTE: If you cannot determine the proper key sequence to enter System Setup,
  115. refer to your computer owner's manual or call your computer manufacturer for
  116. assistance.

  184. TROUBLESHOOTING 
  185.    
  186. System Lockup Information 
  187.  
  188. If you have added a new drive and your system locks up at boot time (right
  189. after turning the power on), or locks up during System Setup, there are several
  190. possible causes. 
  191.  
  192. If using parallel ATA, verify that the 40-pin ribbon cable is properly attached, 
  193. making sure that pin 1 on the cable matches pin 1 on the drive. 
  194.

  196. Next, if your new drive is larger than 33.8GB, you may have an Award 4.51 BIOS
  197. with a 33.8GB limitation that causes the system to hang during the Power On
  198. Self Test (POST). 
  199.  
  200. The best solution is to obtain a BIOS upgrade from your computer manufacturer
  201. to support drives greater than 33.8GB. 
  202.  
  203. Another solution for this 33.8GB limitation is to use the MaxBlast 3
  204. utility to issue a command to the drive that will make it report a size of 33.8GB
  205. or less.  This will alleviate the hang during POST and allow the system to boot.
  206. Using this method, MaxBlast 3 will still be able to install the drive to the
  207. full capacity using the Dynamic Drive Overlay.
  208.  
  209. To implement this solution, use the following instructions. 
  210. 1. Restart your computer and enter the System Setup program.  Change the 
  211.    setting for your new drive to "NONE". Save the settings, exit the System 
  212.    Setup program and power down your computer.
  213. 2. Insert your MaxBlast 3 bootable diskette and power up your computer.
  214. 3. From the main menu, select Utilities.
  215. 4. Select the "Set Drive Size" utility.  Then your new drive.
  216. 5. Follow the on-screen instructions to set the drive size.
  217. 6. When you are finished setting the drive size, reboot your computer.  Enter 
  218.    the System Setup program and set the drive type to "AUTO".  Save the 
  219.    settings and exit the System Setup program.
  220.  
  221. After following the instructions, restart your system with the
  222. MaxBlast 3 Diskette.
  223.  
  224. [SYSTEMLOCKUP2] 
  225. If your new drive is over 32GB, and other solutions have not worked, your 
  226. drive may provide a Capacity Limitation Jumper (CLJ) that will lock the drives 
  227. LBA size to approximately 32 GB - allowing it to be used on systems that do 
  228. not support it (such as those having the Award BIOS 4.51 problem).  Follow the 
  229. procedure below titled "For drives WITH a Capacity Limitation Jumper (CLJ)" to lock 
  230. the drive size to approximately 32GB.  (Note if the CLJ
  231. is used on a drive over 32GB, DDO will not see more than the AC 
  232. jumper forced size of approximately 32GB). 
  233.  
  234. If your new drive is between 2.1Gb and 32GB, and your System Setup (CMOS) is 
  235. set to "AUTO", you may have a BIOS with a 4096-cylinder limitation that hangs 
  236. the system during auto-detection.  Your computer manufacturer may have a BIOS 
  237. upgrade that will support more than 4096 cylinders.  To continue with this 
  238. installation, your drive may provide a Capacity Limitation Jumper (CLJ) setting 
  239. that lowers the cylinder auto-detection to below the BIOS limitation barrier 
  240. and still provide full drive capacity using your hard disk installation 
  241. utility. 
  242.  
  243. In this case, power off your system and install your drive's AC jumper, or 
  244. remove your new drive and go to the beginning of these instructions and follow 
  245. each step. 
  246.  
  247. For drives WITH a Capacity Limitation Jumper (CLJ) option: 
  248.  
  249. 1. Install the CLJ jumper per drive label instructions. 
  250. 2. Set the CMOS drive type using ONE of the following methods listed in 
  251.    preferred order: 
  252.    a. Select "Automatic Drive Detection".  This allows your computer to 
  253.       configure itself automatically for your new drive. 
  254.    b. Select "User-defined" or "Custom" drive setting and set to the following:
  255.       1024   cylinders 
  256.         16   heads 
  257.         63   sectors 
  258.          0   write precomp (wp) 
  259.          0   landing zone (lz) 
  260.    c. Select Drive Type 1.
  261.  
  262. For drives WITHOUT a Capacity Limitation Jumper (CLJ) option, choose option b) 
  263. or c) in step 2 above.
  264.  
  265. [MOUNTDRIVE]
  266. INSTRUCTIONS FOR MOUNTING THE DRIVE 
  267.  
  268. ( ) Mount the drive. 
  269.  
  270. 1. Mount the drive in either the horizontal or the vertical position. 
  271. 2. Slide the drive into the bay. 
  272. 3. Align the drive-bay screw holes with the threaded holes in the drive 
  273.    housing or expansion brackets.  Hand thread the screws to lightly secure the 
  274.    drive in the bay.  For some installations, you might have to use the screw 
  275.    holes on the bottom (circuit board side) of the drive. 
  276. 4. Check the drive alignment and tighten the screws firmly.  DO NOT over 
  277.    tighten. 
  278.  
  279. NOTE: If you need to attach the drive in a 5.25-inch bay, attach a pair of 
  280. 3.5-inch to 5.25-inch expansion brackets.  Some computers require that 
  281. you attach special hard-disk-drive mounting hardware to ensure that the 
  282. drive mounts securely into the bay.  Contact your computer dealer or refer 
  283. to the documentation that comes with your computer if you need specialized 
  284. mounting hardware or more information. 
  285.

  287. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ATTACHING CABLES TO THE DRIVE 
  288.  
  289. ( ) Attach the cables to your new drive. 
  290.  
  291. 1. Locate a free device connector on the ATA interface cable in your computer. 
  292.    One end connector and the middle connector on the cable connect to the 
  293.    storage devices.  The other end of the cable connects to the ATA port.  The 
  294.    ATA port can be on the computer system board or on an adapter installed in 
  295.    an expansion slot.  For the best signal quality when you have only one 
  296.    device on the ATA cable, connect the device to the connector on the end 
  297.    opposite the ATA port.  Attach an available connector on the interface cable 
  298.    to the connector on the drive.
  299. 2. Be sure that pin 1, the colored wire on the interface cable, is closest to 
  300.    the DC power connector. 
  301. 3. Find an unused power connector on a cable coming from the computer power 
  302.    supply and attach it to the four-pin DC power connector.  The power 
  303.    connector is keyed so that it attaches one way only.  DO NOT force it.  If 
  304.    the connector does not attach using reasonable pressure, turn it and try 
  305.    again.
  306. 4. Verify that the cables do not interfere with the computer cover and do not 
  307.    block the power-supply fan blades or air-flow paths.
  308.  
  309. NOTE: If all power cables are in use, purchase a DC Y-connector (available at 
  310. many electronic stores) and split a connection to provide power for more 
  311. devices.

  314. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ATTACHING CABLES TO THE DRIVE

  318. 1. Attach the Serial Data cable to the drive.  Attach the other end of the cable
  319.    to the system board or host controller.  Both ends of the data cable are keyed 
  320.    so that they attach one way only.  DO NOT force it.  
  321. 2. Some systems allow for Serial ATA drives to be powered using a 3.3V connection 
  322.    on the system board.  For more information on this type of connection, please
  323.    consult your system board manual.  Otherwise, find an unused power connector 
  324.    on a cable coming from the computer power supply and attach it to the DC power 
  325.    connector on the drive, an adapter may be necessary.   The power 
  326.    connector is keyed so that it attaches one way only.  DO NOT force it. If 
  327.    the connector does not attach using reasonable pressure, turn it and try 
  328.    again.
  329. 3. Verify that the cables do not interfere with the computer cover and do not 
  330.    block the power-supply fan blades or air-flow paths.
  331.  
  332. NOTE: If all power cables are in use, purchase a DC Y-connector (available at 
  333. many electronic stores) and split a connection to provide power for more 
  334. devices.

  357. computer cover.  Reconnect all devices.  Make sure that the keyboard, mouse and 
  358. monitor are firmly connected.  Reconnect all AC power cords.
