  24.    ACCESSING THE CONTROL PANEL (NON-RESIDENT)

  26.    To access the Control Panel, type "DJCP" at the DOS (C:\DESKJET>) 
  27.    prompt.  If the \DESKJET directory is in your PATH, you can
  28.    access the Control Panel from any directory. 
  29.

  31.    USING THE DESKJET CONTROL PANEL AS A RESIDENT PROGRAM 
  32.    ----------------------------------------------------- 
  33.    You can run the Control Panel as a memory-resident program. 
  34.    A memory-resident program is a program that is available even 
  35.    when other software programs are running. The Control Panel 
  36.    is accessed from within your software program through a 
  37.    hot-key. The default hot-key for the Control Panel is "<Alt> p". 
  38.  
  39.    The memory-resident Control Panel reports the current status 
  40.    of the printer and lets you select print quality, orientation, 
  41.    and font size settings. 
  42.  
  43.    There are two ways to load the Control Panel as a 
  44.    memory-resident program: 
  45.  
  46.    * Type "DJCPTSR" at the DOS (C:\>) prompt. 
  47.  
  48.    * Make the Control Panel resident through the non-resident 
  49.      version as follows: 
  50.        
  51.      1. Type "DJCP" at the DOS (C:\>) prompt. 
  52.      2. Click "More Settings" in the Control Panel. 
  53.      3. Click "Memory-Resident Functions". 
  54.      4. Click "Make Memory-Resident" and follow instructions.
  55.      5. Reboot your computer. 
  56.  
  57.    This will cause the memory resident Control Panel to be
  58.    loaded through your AUTOEXEC.BAT file every time you reboot.

  60.    UNLOADING THE MEMORY-RESIDENT CONTROL PANEL 
  61.    ------------------------------------------- 
  62.    To unload the memory-resident control panel:
  63.  
  64.      Type "DJCPTSR /U" at the DOS (C:\>) prompt. 
  65.  
  66.    NOTE: You can unload the memory-resident Control Panel only 
  67.          if it is the last loaded memory-resident program. If
  68.          it is not the last loaded memory-resident program,
  69.          the system displays an error message.
  70.  
  71.    PREVENT FUTURE LOADING OF THE MEMORY-RESIDENT CONTROL PANEL

  73.    * Remove the Control Panel through the non-resident version 
  74.      as follows: 
  75.        
  76.      1. Type "DJCP" at the DOS (C:\>) prompt. 
  77.      2. Click "More Settings" in the Control Panel. 
  78.      3. Click "Memory-Resident Functions". 
  79.      4. Click "Undo Memory-Resident" and follow instructions. 
  80.      5. Reboot your computer.

  82.      This will remove the line from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file that
  83.      automatically loads the memory-resident Control Panel.

  86.    COMMAND LINE SWITCHES
  87.    ============================================================== 
  88.  
  89.    /Dx  Specifies the model number of the printer to which the
  90.         Control Panel is connected.
  91.  
  92.    /Px  Specifies the parallel port to which the printer is
  93.         connected. Valid values for "x" are 1, 2, or 3. If this
  94.         switch is not included, the Control Panel will default
  95.         to the port it used the last time you ran the Control
  96.         Panel (or the value set during installation if you have
  97.         not used the control panel before).
  98.  
  99.    /?   Displays help about using the DJCP command. 
  100.  
  101.    /H   Displays help about using the DJCP command. 
  102.  
  103.    /M   Changes the colors used in the Control Panel to be
  104.         compatible with monochrome displays. 
  105.  
  106.    /U   Removes the memory-resident Control Panel from memory. 
  107.         See the instructions in the "UNLOADING THE MEMORY-RESIDENT
  108.         CONTROL PANEL" section of this file for detailed
  109.         information. (The /U switch works only with the DJCPTSR
  110.         command.)
  111.  
  112.    Example: To select the printer on parallel port 2 (lpt2),  
  113.             type "DJCP /P2" at the DOS (C:\>) prompt.

  115.    ============================================================== 
  116.    INSTALLATION TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEMS 
  117.    ============================================================== 
  118.  
  119.    If a screen with the message "Communication cannot be
  120.    established between the printer and the computer to which it
  121.    is connected" is displayed during installation, the
  122.    installation program has been unable to establish two-way
  123.    communications with the printer.
  124.  
  125.    The problem may be caused by one of the following conditions:
  126.  
  127.    * The printer is turned off.
  128.    * A printer interface cable problem.
  129.    * Use of a switch box or fax accessory.
  130.    * Your printer is connected to a network.
  131.    * Your computer's parallel port, cable, or switch box does not
  132.      support two-way communication.
  133.  
  134.    Some printer interface cables and switch boxes do not
  135.    support all 25 lines on the parallel port. This is required
  136.    for two-way communication between the computer and the printer.
  137.  
  138.    You may still be able to print. Try printing a document.
  139.    If it prints, you can use the printer, but some printer
  140.    functions will not be available. If you have set up your
  141.    printer according to the First Time Setup instructions
  142.    in the user's guide for your printer and your printer is
  143.    still not printing, replace the printer interface cable.
  144.  
  145.    If replacing the cable does not solve the problem, call the
  146.    HP Customer Support Center.

  149.    KNOWN PROBLEMS 
  150.    ==============================================================

  152.    Changing Print Settings While a Document is Printing
  153.    ----------------------------------------------------
  154.    If print settings are changed through the Control Panel
  155.    while a document is currently printing, the printout may
  156.    be corrupted, and the printer may not receive the new
  157.    settings. 
  158.  
  159.    Printing in Landscape Orientation
  160.    ---------------------------------
  161.    This feature is provided for use with programs that do not
  162.    provide the capability of printing in landscape. If your
  163.    program supports printing in landscape, make sure that the
  164.    orientation in the Control Panel is set to Portrait.
  165.  
  166.    Some programs will print incorrectly if the printer is set
  167.    to landscape orientation in the Control Panel. These include
  168.    Microsoft Word for DOS, Microsoft Works for DOS, Harvard
  169.    Graphics for DOS, and AutoCAD.  To print in landscape from
  170.    these programs, set the orientation in the program, NOT in the
  171.    Control Panel.

  173.    Mouse Drivers
  174.    -------------
  175.    If you are having problems using the mouse with the
  176.    memory-resident Control Panel, make sure the load command
  177.    for the Control Panel is after the load command for your
  178.    mouse driver in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Edit AUTOEXEC.BAT to
  179.    place the line "C:\DESKJET\DJCPTSR.EXE" after the
  180.    mouse driver line.

  182.    Hot-Key conflicts
  183.    -----------------
  184.    Microsoft Works and Broderbund Print Shop Deluxe: The default
  185.    hot-key (<Alt> p) used for the memory-resident version of
  186.    the HP DeskJet Control Panel conflicts with the print key
  187.    sequence (<Alt> p) for Microsoft Works and Broderbund
  188.    Print Shop Deluxe. To use the Control Panel with these
  189.    programs, redefine the hot-key through the non-resident
  190.    Control Panel. To do this, run DJCP from the DOS prompt.

  192.    Incompatibilities
  193.    -----------------
  194.    Microsoft Flight Simulator: The memory-resident Control Panel
  195.    is not compatible with Microsoft Flight Simulator.  Running the
  196.    memory-resident Control Panel from within Microsoft Flight
  197.    Simulator may cause errors.
