  4. What is VidRes?
  5. ---------------
  6. VidRes is an easy to use Windows utility that enables you to quickly switch 
  7. the display resolution of your machine without making the change permanent.
  8.  
  9. Installation
  10. ------------
  11. VidRes is supplied as a compressed file archive. Copy the compressed file to 
  12. an empty floppy disk or new sub-directory on your hard disk & extract the 
  13. files. Copy VidRes.exe to a suitable sub-directory and create a shortcut to it 
  14. on your desktop.

  16. Requirements
  17. ------------
  18. Windows 95, or Windows NT 3.51, and MFC30.DLL for run-time support.
  19.  
  20. Use
  21. ---
  22. The default operation of VidRes (invoked without any command line parameters) 
  23. displays a simple dialog box containing a list of all the possible display 
  24. resolutions. VidRes prefaces each item with a display mode number that you can 
  25. use directly with VidRes by passing the mode number as a command line 
  26. parameter. Items with a marker '╢', indicate that Windows can switch directly 
  27. to that mode without having to restart your machine. It's these marked modes 
  28. that you are likely to want to use. If you choose to use an unmarked mode, 
  29. VidRes prompts you that it needs to make the change permanent and will ask you 
  30. to restart your machine.

  32. Use VidRes interactively to find the mode numbers you want to use. Then, 
  33. create desktop shortcuts with the mode number as a command line parameter so 
  34. that you can easily switch between the modes you use.

  36. For example I have 2 items:
  37. "E:\vidres\vidres.exe 2"    that switches my display to standard VGA mode, and
  38. "E:\vidres\vidres.exe 4"    that switched to 1024x768 resolution.

  40. The actual mode numbers depend on the type of your video card.

  42. Notes
  43. -----
  44. This version of VidRes runs under Windows NT 3.51, but is limited to showing 
  45. the possible display modes; it is unable to effect a mode change. A future 
  46. release of Windows NT should allow VidRes to work correctly.

  48. Uses For VidRes
  49. ---------------
  50. To switch between high resolution modes and standard VGA resolution when 
  51. playing Windows games that would otherwise only occupy a small area of the 
  52. display.

  54. Feedback we have had from early users has indicated that it's of use for 
  55. developers designing Windows applications. Here it allows you to quickly check 
  56. the visual aspects of your user interface design at different display 
  57. resolutions.
