  58.      These instructions explain how to identify a virus with the
  59. VIRUSCAN program and remove the virus with the CLEAN-UP program.
  60. They are intended to provide an emergency means to identify and
  61. remove an infection.  They are not meant to replace the program
  62. documentation.  Please read through the documentation for
  63. detailed instructions.
  64.  
  65.      Files ending in a .DOC extension have been formatted for
  66. printing on a printer with a minimum of 55 lines per page.
  67. Files ending in a .TXT extension have not been formatted.

  70. VIRUSCAN (SCAN)
  71.  
  72. 1.   Copy all the VIRUSCAN files to a floppy disk in drive A:.
  73.  
  74. 2.   WRITE PROTECT THE DISK!!!
  75.  
  76. 3.   Turn computer off to remove the virus from memory, insert a
  77.      clean (virus-free) DOS system boot disk into the A: drive,
  78.      and turn the power back on.
  79.  
  80. 4.   Insert the VIRUSCAN disk into the infected PC and type:
  81.  
  82.           SCAN C: D: E:
  83.  
  84.      This will allow VIRUSCAN to scan the C:, D:, and E: drives.
  85.      If you do not have D: and E: drives, leave them out.
  86.  
  87.       NOTE: If infected files are found, they may be ERASED by
  88.             running SCAN with the /D (overwrite and delete)
  89.             option:
  90.  
  91.           SCAN C: D: E: /D
  92.  
  93.      Running SCAN with the /D option will delete files so they
  94.      can not be recovered.  Use this option only if you do NOT
  95.      want to recover any infected files.  Otherwise use CLEAN-UP,
  96.      the universal virus disinfection program.
  97.  
  98. 4.   Copy SCAN.EXE to the hard disk and run it from there against
  99.      any floppies you suspect have the virus on them.

  113. CLEAN-UP (CLEAN)
  114.  
  115. 1.   Copy all the CLEAN-UP files to a floppy disk in drive A:.
  116.  
  117. 2.   WRITE PROTECT THE DISK!!!
  118.  
  119. 3.   Power down the infected system and then boot from a clean,
  120.      write protected system master diskette.  This must be done
  121.      to remove any viruses from memory that may interfere with the
  122.      virus removal process.
  123.  
  124.      NOTE: If you are unable to access the hard disk after booting
  125.            from a floppy, check to make sure that any special
  126.            device drivers needed to use the hard disk are on the
  127.            floppy and loaded from the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT
  128.            file.  Check to make sure the version of DOS is the
  129.            same version as on the hard disk (or a later version).
  130.  
  131. 4.    AT THIS POINT IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE A BACKUP OF ANY CRITICAL
  132.       FILES ON YOUR SYSTEM, THEN DO SO IMMEDIATELY.
  133.  
  134. 5.   Insert the CLEAN-UP disk into the floppy drive of the
  135.      infected PC and type:
  136.  
  137.           CLEAN C: D: E: [virus I.D. code]
  138.  
  139.      This will allow CLEAN-UP to disinfect viruses on the C:, D:,
  140.      and E: drives.  If you do not have D: and E: drives, leave them
  141.      out.
  142.  
  143.      For the Jerusalem virus, the ID code is [JERU].  For the
  144.      Stoned virus, the ID code is [STONED].  For other viruses,
  145.      use the ID code reported by SCAN, or refer to the
  146.      VIRLIST.TXT file.  Be sure to include the square brackets,
  147.      "[" and "]."
  148.  
  149.      If you are disinfecting a file-infecting virus, such as the
  150.      Jerusalem, it is recommended that you add the /A switch to the
  151.      command line to check all files.  This will ensure that the virus
  152.      is removed from any overlay files that may not use the default
  153.      overlay extensions recognized by CLEAN-UP.
  154.  
  155.      If more than one virus type was detected, then CLEAN-UP will
  156.      have to be run for each type of virus.
  157.  
  158. 5.   Turn the computer off and then re-boot from the hard disk,
  159.      run SCAN to confirm that the virus has been removed, copy
  160.      CLEAN.EXE to the hard disk, and check any floppies that may
  161.      have been infected by the virus.

  168. AN IMPORTANT NOTE
  169.  
  170. You have now completed a virus disinfection of your computer
  171. system, however, you may have other computers and floppy disks
  172. that are infected.  You now have a clean PC from which to
  173. scan and clean them.  Please now take the time to read through
  174. the VIRUSCAN and CLEAN-UP documentation to show you the fastest
  175. and safest way of completely removing your computer virus infection.
