  12. What's new?  Look for the *new!* as you read.

  14. PadlockHack allows you to enter your password with the hardware keys of your
  15. Palm handheld.  (Those are the Datebook/Address/ToDo/Memo and Page Up/Down
  16. buttons).  No more fumbling around with your stylus, worried that people are
  17. looking over your shoulder while you enter your password!  No more skimping
  18. on security because entering the password takes too long every time you start
  19. up your handheld.  With PadlockHack entering your password is as easy as
  20. pushing a few buttons!

  23. Now in version 1.5 a rare but potentially dangerous bug has been cured.  Also,
  24. the configuration screen has a Cancel button--fiddle with the options all you
  25. want, then cancel your changes if you so desire.

  37. To install PadlockHack you need HackMaster.  This is the Hack manager written
  38. by Edward Keyes, available at http://www.daggerware.com/hackmstr.htm (or by
  39. searching any of the PalmPilot archives).  Once you've installed HackMaster,
  40. install PadlockHack like you would any other application.  From there on,
  41. everything is fairly simple.  See below for the configuration options.

  43. PadlockHack is free; HackMaster is not.  If you're not a registered user
  44. of HackMaster please be an honorable person and register it.  (That was for
  45. Ed's benefit. :)

  48. As with any hack, you should always be careful when installing it.  It's a
  49. good idea to backup any important information you have stored on your Palm
  50. handheld.  If you have a previous version of PadlockHack you do not need to
  51. delete it before installing v1.5.  Simply install PadlockHack v1.5 over the
  52. earlier version.  However, do make sure that it has been uninstalled in
  53. HackMaster before HotSyncing the new version.

  59. The Configure PadlockHack screen has 2 basic functions.  The first is setting
  60. the letters for each button.  Each button may have 1 and only 1 letter that
  61. it "types."  Pick the 6 characters that you want to use in your password.

  63. You can use the next/previous field characters to move between fields, or
  64. just tap on the one you want to edit.  Leaving a letter blank and selecting
  65. OK will result in that letter being reset to its last value.

  67. "Show private records at unlock" will--like it says--show the private records
  68. on your Palm device whenever you unlock it.  If you use LaunchPad and use the
  69. lock button, LaunchPad also hides all private records.  PadlockHack gives you
  70. the option to unhide them when you unlock.

  72. AutoLock can lock your Palm handheld whenever you turn it off.  AutoLock has
  73. 3 setings:
  74.    Always: AutoLock will always lock whenever the Palm device is turned off
  75.    Never : AutoLock will never lock your Palm device
  76.    Smart : If the device is physically turned off with the hardware button
  77.            PadlockHack will AutoLock.  If the device times out and turns it-
  78.            self off, PadlockHack will not AutoLock.

  80. Below the 6 letters is a handy reference to your password.  This mirrors the
  81. functionality in the Security app, so any password you set/change/delete here
  82. will be set there, and vice versa.  You can use the set hardware buttons to
  83. type in your password in any of these dialog boxes.
  84.    WARNING: using the hardware buttons without PadlockHack enabled will
  85.             switch to that application.
  86.    WARNING: the password you set in PadlockHack is the same password in the
  87.             Security application.  Do remember your password!
  88.    WARNING: If you set a LOT OF CASH on top of your car, watch out!--the
  89.             slightest bit of wind could blow it all away!  (For those who
  90.             were getting tired of all these warnings :)

  96. This hack was designed to run on OS 2.0 or greater.  If you experience any
  97. problems using this hack on any platform please let us know.

  100. any problems please email us at mcdan@csi.com and we will try to have a fix
  101. available within 24 hours.
