  9. Installation Notes
  10. ------------------

  12.   Simply use The PalmPilot Install Tool (InstApp.exe) to install the
  13.   'note.prc' file onto your PalmPilot.
  14.  
  15.   You must also install the ONE of the vocabulary databases (also using
  16.   'instapp'). Either:

  29. Instructions & Guide
  30. --------------------

  32.   NoteTaker is a MemoPad replacement app which includes an English spelling
  33.   checker, and:
  34.  
  35.      - an easy to use user interface (just a double tap on the word you wish to
  36.          check)
  37.  
  38.      - intuitive 'Word Suggestion'. Prompts you with words that you are
  39.          likely to be typing, saving you many Graffiti strokes.
  40.  
  41.      - a 'slim' database (only ~80K) containing 'harder' words rather than
  42.          common words which you are unlikely to want to look up (thus saving
  43.          valuable RAM).
  44.          NOTE: Now has alternate databases with more common words,
  45.                improving the Word Suggestion/Completion feature.
  46.  
  47.      - simply tap on words in the list box and the word you selected replaces
  48.           the word you double tapped.
  49.  
  50.      - a highly optimized, compressed database.
  51.  
  52.   For registered users:
  53.  
  54.      - Has 'Copy' & 'Cut' buttons on popup screen, to
  55.        copy/cut the selected word to the clipboard.
  56.  
  57.      - Optional supplemental dictionary. You can maintain a list of 'extra'
  58.        words, possibly specialised to your occupation. (add them from your
  59.        Pilot, or on your desktop computer)

  62.   Here is a detailed description of the program's operation.
  63.  
  64.        - first open an existing document, or tap the 'New' button. Start typing
  65.          a word and after writing enough of the 'prefix' double tap on this word
  66.          with the pen.
  67.  
  68.           OR:   double tap on a word already contained in a document
  69.  
  70.        - the SpellCheck window should now pop-up, with the text you tapped on
  71.          entered into a text field, with words beginning with that text in the
  72.          listbox below.

  74.        - use the hardware up and down buttons to scroll the list up and down.
  75.  
  76.        - If you see the word you were looking for just tap on the listbox entry,
  77.          automatically replacing the original text with the word you selected.

  79.           OR:   if the word you selected has a full-stop ('.') in it, this indicates
  80.                 that the word has various suffixes that are possible. When you tap
  81.                 on a list entry like this the list is replaced with all the possible
  82.                 expansions of that word. eg.

  86.                 gets expanded to:

  92.        - Simply tap on the particular word you want, OR tap the 'Done' button
  93.          to exit SpellCheck without selecting a word.

  95.          OR:   If the word wasn't found, try deleting trailing parts of the word
  96.                from the text field (after the 'text:' prompt). eg.
  97.  
  98.                    if 'familliar' was entered, try deleting the 'liar' part
  99.                    to get just 'famil'. Now the list will show all known words
  100.                    starting with 'famil'.

  102.        - OR, Tap the 'Copy' button to copy the double-tapped word to the
  103.          clipboard. (Registered users only)

  106. Configuring NoteTaker
  107. ---------------------

  109.   From the memo list screen, select the 'Options' menu.
  110.  
  111.   See below in the 'History' section about the various options and features
  112.   available.

  118. Can now scan whole document for unknown words!
  119.  
  120.   Just press the 'Skip' button to scan the document for an unknown
  121.   word. If you have a supplemental dictionary installed you can add
  122.   the unknown word by pressing the 'Add' button.

  124. Supplemental Dictionary support!

  126.   The Options screen now has menu items for creating a supplemental dictionary.
  127.   This creates a Memo document which will be appended to when adding words
  128.   'on the fly', and can be directly edited by you, either on the Pilot or
  129.   the Desktop.
  130.   NOTE:  If you add/modify/remove words from this document you MUST
  131.          rebuild the index by selecting the 'Rebuild Index' menu item
  132.          in the Options screen!

  134. Upper/lower case handling
  135.  
  136.   If you have Caps Lock on the word lists will be convereted to upper
  137.   case. Also, if the word in the database has an upper case letter as
  138.   its first character, selecting that word preserves the initial upper
  139.   case (previously didn't).

  141. 'Copy' button to popup screen
  142.  
  143.   This works around the conflict with SelectHack. There was no clean
  144.   way for the two to co-exist, so we added the function to NoteTaker
  145.   as many people complained about the conflict.
  146.  
  147. 'Wait for pause' feature (for word suggestion/completion)
  148.  
  149.   Now you can specify whether you want the popup lists to come up ONLY
  150.   when there is a slight pause in the graffiti input. This seems to be
  151.   a lot less annoying, and speeds up the processing of the Graffiti
  152.   strokes.

  154.   Go to the 'Options' dialog of 'Word Completion' and choose from the
  155.   options after the 'Wait:' label.

  158.   NOTE:   --- NEW FEATURE!! ---
  159.           When a popup list is up, tap on the 'menu' silk-screen button
  160.           and the currently selected item in the list (usually the preferred
  161.           one) is automatically selected - saving you time.

  164. Strategy of 'Word Suggestion'.
  165.  
  166.   The suggested words have been optimized even more. For example on typing
  167.   a 't', the following words are suggested:
  168.  
  169.             the
  170.             that
  171.             this
  172.             they
  173.             time
  174.  
  175.   These are statistically the most used in English (starting with 't' of course).
  176.   If you now type 'h' (ie. it's now 'th' that has been entered), you get these
  177.   suggested:

  185.   None of the 'th' words from the first list are included in this second list.

  188. Extensive controls in 'Options'.

  190.   The 'Options' screen now has the two 'Options' dialogues implemented.
  191.   You can control where the popup lists get placed, how long they stay up
  192.   for, whether or not you want the 'word suggestion' feature, and whether you
  193.   want a space inserted after completed words.
  194.  
  195.   You can also configure the 'Graffiti Assist' feature, by tapping its
  196.   'Options' button. The dialogue gives you up to 12 characters you can
  197.   effectively 're-map'. This re-mapping only happens when you type the BACKSPACE
  198.   stroke - this is interpreted as "that's NOT the character I wanted" :-)
  199.   Instead of doing "Charcter, Backspace, Character-You-Wanted" you just enter
  200.   pairs of these erroneous characters in this dialogue, and then enable
  201.   the 'Graffiti Assist' checkbox. Now, a backspace over one of these characters
  202.   automatically gets corrected to your preference.

  204.   NOTE:  it is only useful configuring characters that commonly get interpreted
  205.          wrong, otherwise it can be annoying. Just clear the other character
  206.          pairs (of the 12) if you don't want to use them.

  209. Intuitive Word Suggestion

  211.   When starting a word, a list will popup of the most common English words
  212.   starting with what you have already typed. TRY IT OUT - go to the
  213.   Options screen and check the 'Word Completion' checkbox.
  214.  
  215.   We hope to have a seperate preferance for word suggestion very soon. For
  216.   now turning on 'Word Completion' enables both 'Word Suggestion' and
  217.   'Word Completion'. The two are very similar, but have some slightly
  218.   different semantics.

  223.   When typing in a word and enough letters have been entered to fairly
  224.   uniquely narrow down a word, SpellCheck will automatically popup a
  225.   list of possible words which you are tying to enter. Just tap on the
  226.   word desired, or just keep typing (or tap outside the popup list)
  227.   to ignore the suggestion.

  229.   You can enable/disable this feaure by setting the corresponding
  230.   checkbox in the SpellConfig application.

  238. Known Problems

  241.   - Currently the word lookup is 'exact', ie. it looks into an index of known words.
  242.     We hope to get phonetic matching implemented in a future version, so that it shows
  243.     likely matches (based on sound) of incorrectly spelled words.

  246. Vocabulary Issues
  247. -----------------

  249.   Undoubtedly the vocabulary in the initial version of 'words.pdb' will need to be
  250.   expanded. Presently there are approximately 13000 'root' words in the database,
  251.   with information on words formed from these root words (eg. sceptic -> sceptical)
  252.   The words currently in the database have been picked by 'rareness', or words with
  253.   exceptional spelling, so that the amount of RAM being used is minimized.
