README for LockMe! - v1.1
(c) 1998 by RenΘ Witte <witte@acm.org>
http://wwwipd.ira.uka.de/~witte/pilot/lockme/
LockMe! is freeware (see the GNU license)
and comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY!
Description
-----------
LockMe! periodically locks your Pilot, starting at a specified time.
Documentation
-------------
Install and start LockMe!
If you have older versions installed, please delete them before
installing this one. If you have a PalmPilot and did not yet install the
OS 2.0.5 upgrade, please also do a soft reset after deleting the old version.
Activate LockMe! via the checkbox and select the start time you want your
Pilot to lock.
You can choose the locking interval between one hour and one day.
So, to get the same behaviour as the old (1.0) version (lock once every day)
you would select the time and "24 hours". If you select a start time
of "06:00" and an interval of "12 hours" your Pilot will lock every
day at 06:00 and 18:00 etc... (you need more examples? :-)
If you also check "Hide Records", it will hide your private records
at the same time.
If you check the new option "Lock after reset" you Pilot will lock
after a (soft) reset. Note that you will have about 10 sec. after
a reset before the lock goes off. This is important for the
HACKMASTER users since this is when you're asked whether you want
your hacks reinstalled. If you don't make it (and your Pilot locks),
HackMaster takes this as a "no" (and you will have to enable your
hacks manually).
Additionally, you can use the button at the bottom to instantly
turn off&lock your Pilot.
Of course, all this is quite pointless if you didn't assign a password...
NOTE! IMPORTANT!
Even if you later uncheck (=disable) "Enable LockMe!",
it will lock your Pilot *one more time*.
That's a feature, not a bug. Why? See below...
Ok, but what's the point of all this?
-------------------------------------
Personally, I carry my Pilot with me all the time, and usually don't lock it
since I often want quick access to some data without having to enter a password
first. However, in case it ever gets lost/stolen/runs away, I want to make
sure that the "Security Lockout" screen (with my contact address) eventually
appears.
Although there are a lot of other security apps out there, I didn't find one
that does a scheduled, periodical lock (they allow you to automatically lock
your Pilot 10 min. after sunset or one hour after writing "!" into the datebook
and whathaveyou, but I didn't like all this, too complicated ;-)
So, even if somebody finds your Pilot and turns off the LockMe! application,
it will lock it *one more time*. Of course, this can be prevented by deleting
the application, but the point here is not complete security (one can do a
hard reset anyway), rather a means of forcing the log-in screen to appear.
