Note: Wheel of Treasure is released as shareware and must be registered for
continued use. The author assumes no responsibility for damages caused by
this program. Make sure to back up (hotsync) your data before installing
the program.
This is the Evaluation version of Wheel of Treasure 1.00 for the Pilot. It
contains 35 entries which can be played as many times as you like. If you like
the program, a registered version is available for $12 US and adds the
following features:
- Uses multiple databases to provide 1000's of entries.
- Databases can be installed and erased individually, as all of the entries
in each get used up.
- Disables Splash screen.
The registered version is available for $12 US and can be purchased via:

WHEEL.PRC - The Program that runs the actual game

-------------------------- Installation ----------------------------------
First, make sure you have the appropriate space available on your pilot.
The space required for the program itself is ~42K.
To see if you have enough memory, run the Memory application on the
pilot. If you do not have at least the appropriate amount free, you will
either have to choose to delete apps from the same Memory application, or
choose to not install this program until you have that amount of free memory.
To install Wheel onto your Pilot, run the INSTAPP.EXE program which
resides in the same directory as the Pilot Desktop software. This program
will allow you to specify that a .PRC file should be downloaded to the Pilot
during the next hotsync. Choose to download WHEEL.PRC.
NOTES: If you are using HotSync V1.0 (which is what came with the Pilot-1000
and Pilot-5000), you may get a program crash when installing this program,
or its data files. This is because HotSync V1.0 has a bug in it when dealing
with files > 32K. Being that the program is larger than this, it may fail to
download correctly. The solution to this problem is to upgrade to HotSync
1.1, or 2.0. To read more about this or to download HotSync V1.1 go to:

----------------------- Instructions For Use ------------------------------
--Quick Start
To start a new game, bring down the pulldown menu, and select File, then New
Game. Select the number of players, followed by the names of the players.
Then press Done. The player chosen to go first should then press the spin
button. The wheel will spin and stop on a prize amount. If the prize amount
is not Lose Turn, or Bankrupt, the player can press OK, and then make a
non-vowel guess. If they guess a letter that is present in the phrase, they
may spin again, or, if they have enough points, may buy a vowel, or a hint.
If they have enough money, the Vowel and Hint buttons will show up below the
Spin button. If they guess wrong, the next player goes. Any player can
solve the puzzle at any time during their turn by writing the EXACT phrase on
the line along the bottom and then pressing the Guess button. If they are
correct, they alone take the prize amount they have earned for that round.
The next round will begin. At the end of the 3 (by default) rounds, the
person who has the most prize money will be the final winner.
--The Main Screen
The main screen changes constantly, to adjust for various stages in the game.
The Title bar will show the category of the current phrase, unless it is
turned off in the preferences section. At the top right of the screen are
the letters of the alphabet. When making a (non-vowel) guess, you need only
touch the letter of your choice to make that guess. The letters that have
been guessed already will disappear from the choices available. To make a
guess of the entire phrase, write the EXACT phrase along the bottom line and
then press the Guess button to the left of the line. To Spin the wheel,
press the Spin button. If you have enough money to buy a vowel (250
default), a Vowel button will appear near the top left. If you have enough
money to buy a hint (500 default), a Hint button will appear near the top
left. Neither of these buttons will appear if they are disabled (see the
Preferences section).
--Spin Button
This button spins the wheel. When the wheel stops, the currently pointed-to
prize will be placed on the table for the next guess. This excludes the
Bankrupt and Lose Turn "prizes". Then, the number of matches your next
guess makes will determine how many times the prize amount will be awarded
to you. For example, if you land on 100, and you guess the letterl 'L',
and there are 4 'L's in the phrase, you will get 400 points. If you are
unable to guess a matching letter, you will forfeit your turn and not be
awarded any of the current prize money on the table. The Bankrupt prize puts
your current round's score back to zero and you lose your turn. The Lose
Turn prize causes you to give up your turn to the next player. NOTE: The
Lose Turn prize does not occur in one-player (instead, the wheel will always
"magically" advance to the 100 prize!).
--Vowel Button
This button allows you to select a vowel to buy. Each vowel costs 250
as a default, although this can be changed in the preferences section. If
you choose to buy a vowel 250 will be deducted from your current round score.
If you guess a matching vowel, you will still be able to Spin. If you guess
a vowel that doesn't match, you will forfeit your turn to the next player.
Vowels must be purchased before spinning. Once you've spun the wheel, you
have to make a non-vowel guess.
--Hint Button
This button allows you to purchase a hint or clue. There are two varieties
of clues available. The first clue costs 500, by default, and shows you the
subcategory of the current phrase. This may or may not help, depending on
where you are in the puzzle solving. As example, a Song Name phrase may
have Rock as the subcategory. The next clue available is more specific to
the current phrase and may be a year related to the phrase, or a performer
related to the song or movie name. These clues cost 750, by default. The
current player can choose whether or not to show the other players these
clues, but he or she should be aware that it was their hard-earned prize
money that was spent on them! The Clues can be turned off in the preferences
section of the program.
--Guess Button
This button should be pressed after writing in your guess of the phrase on
the line to the right. This guess does not need to be case sensitive, but it
does need to have all of the appropriate punctuation in order to match what
is on the screen above. If you guess correctly, your current prize money
will be placed into your overall score for comparison at the end, and all
other players will be awarded 0, for this round.
--Preferences
From the File pull down menu, you can bring up the Preferences choice,
which will allow you to set various preferences for running the
program. In this menu, you can select whether there will be sound in the
game. You can also select the price of, or disable, buying a vowel, a
subcategory hint, or a clue. To do this just touch the current value to the
right, and select your choice. Each item can range from free to not allowed.
After selecting your choices, press the OK button at the bottom of the screen.
--View Ranks
From the file pull down menu, you can bring up the View Ranks option, which
will show the current game's rankings. This is not the score that the
players have this current round, but rather, the accumulated scores after the
last finished round.
After viewing, press the DONE button at the bottom of the screen.
--Top Ten
From the file pull down menu, you can bring up the Top Ten option, which
will show the top ten highest winnings earned since your program was
installed.
After viewing, press the DONE button at the bottom of the screen.
--Cut, Copy, and Paste
From the pull down menus, you can cut, copy, or paste to and from either word
on the screen, and bring/take either word into/from another application (such
as the memopad application).
