  15. 1:    Introduction.
  16.  
  17. ChessGenius for Palm connected organizers contains a World
  18. Microcomputer Championship winning chess engine. It offers
  19. incredibly strong play even on the instant level and a wide range
  20. of features for beginners and experts.
  21. It runs on all Palm devices that have Palm OS3.0 or higher and
  22. about 80KB of free memory. It also runs on the PalmPilot
  23. Professional with OS2.0 but not on the PalmPilot Personal.
  24. ChessGenius was written by Richard Lang, ten times Computer Chess
  25. World Champion.

  28. 2:    Registration

  30. Get the full World Championship Program in your pocket by
  31. registering at:

  33. After registering you will receive a 'License Key'. Enter this
  34. key to unleash the full features of ChessGenius.

  36. The unregistered ChessGenius has the following limitations.
  37. - Playing Level. After move twenty the playing level switches
  38.   to 1 second per move.
  39. - Main line. Not displayed after move ten.
  40. - Opening library is smaller.
  41. - Save game to memo only saves the first 10 moves of a game.
  42. - The 'ChessGenius unregistered box' is displayed each time the
  43.   program starts.

  46. 3:    Hints and Tips.
  47.  
  48. To play with the Black pieces:
  49. Select 'New game' and then 'Switch sides/Move' to force
  50. ChessGenius to move first.
  51.  
  52. Menus and Shortcuts:
  53. Tap the Menu icon to bring up the ChessGenius menu. The Menu icon
  54. is the round icon at the bottom left of the screen. (Below the
  55. area used by ChessGenius and to the left of the writing area).
  56. It is often quicker to use shortcuts: Write the letter of the
  57. shortcut on the Graffiti area (The shortcut stroke is not
  58. required).
  59.  
  60. Take back:
  61. This reverses a single move so has the effect of changing sides.
  62. To avoid changing sides take back twice. The scroll button
  63. provides a quick way to take back and step forward.
  64.  
  65. Board sizes:
  66. Tap on the small icon on the bottom right to switch between Small
  67. and Big board sizes. Use menu command or short cut 'I' to see the
  68. Giant board.

  70. Championship:
  71. The word 'Championship' is displayed on the small board view if
  72. 'Hint' and 'Take back' have not been used and the 'Main line' has
  73. not been viewed and 'Playing level' not changed during game.
  74. Can you beat ChessGenius and see the word 'Championship' ?

  76. Clocks:
  77. The chess clocks at the top of the small board view show time
  78. as minutes:seconds or hours;minutes.  Note the ':' or ';'
  79. If the playing level is set to 'Game in ..' the clocks count down 
  80. to show the remaining time. When time has run out '--:--' is
  81. displayed. If the playing level is changed mid game the clocks
  82. are set to appropriate times.

  84. Playing levels:
  85. The 'Mate in' playing level can only be used for solving chess
  86. problems, not for playing games or with ChessGenius vs. 
  87. ChessGenius.

  89. Side to Move:
  90. The text 'Thinking' or 'Your move' is displayed normally if White
  91. is to move and reversed if Black to move.

  93. Set up position - castling and en-passant status:
  94. See the 'Tips' that are visible whilst setting up a position for
  95. details.

  97. Auto-off:
  98. ChessGenius does not disable the Auto-off setting of Palm
  99. devices. To prevent switching off during long thinking times or
  100. during ChessGenius vs. ChessGenius games it is necessary to
  101. touch the screen occasionally.

  103. New Game Options:
  104. These options are also in preferences.
  105. a) Show main line: If ticked, the small board will show a line
  106. of text that shows the 'thinking process' of the computer.
  107. For example, the line may show:
  108.   '1.03 05 cxd4 Nxd4 Nc6 Bb5'     This means that:
  109.   ChessGenius is winning by 1.03 pawns,
  110.   Search depth = 5,
  111.   and line of moves. ChessGenius is planning cxd4 and expects
  112.   Nxd4 in reply etc.
  113. b) Opening Book: If ticked ChessGenius will play the first
  114. opening moves of a game from its built in opening library, it
  115. will not calculate or think.

  117. Sound:
  118. Sounds can be switched on or off (and with Palm OS3, the volume
  119. adjusted) by using the built in 'Prefs' application on your Palm
  120. device.

  122. Color and Gray scale support:
  123. See the 'Colors... /O' menu item
  124. Color Palm IIIc: Light and dark board squares can be any color
  125. Palm OS3.5: Light and dark squares can be any gray scale.
  126. Palm OS3.0 to 3.3: Dark squares can be either: dark gray, light
  127.  gray, black checked or dark gray checked.
  128. Palm OS2.0: No support for colors.

  130. Save Game as memo:
  131. This saves the current game as a memo. The game can be deleted,
  132. edited, beamed or put into a category using the built in 'Memo
  133. Pad' application. Your games will be backed up to your desktop
  134. computer during HotSync.

  136. Load game:
  137. This displays a list of saved games. Tap on a game to load it.

  139. Transferring games between Palm and Desktop PC:
  140. ChessGenius loads and saves games in a standard PGN format which
  141. is compatible with most PC Chess playing programs.
  142. Advanced users will be able to move games between the Palm and
  143. Desktop PC by cutting and pasting to the Memo Pad area of the
  144. Palm Desktop software. For details see the FAQ page at:

  148. 4:    Features.

  150. - Incredibly strong play even on the 'instant' level. 
  151. - Forty playing levels.
  152.     Ten easy levels. ChessGenius makes deliberate mistakes. 
  153.     Ten time based levels. Instant, 1 sec, 2 sec,...
  154.     Ten Blitz levels. Whole game in 1 min, 2 min,...
  155.          The Chess Clocks count down in these levels.
  156.         You lose if you run out of time.
  157.     Ten Problem solving levels. Solve newspaper checkmate
  158.         in .. problems.
  159. - Three board views. The smallest board allows much additional
  160.   information to be displayed on screen including:
  161.     The last 8 moves of the game.
  162.     Chess Clocks. Total White and Black time and move time.
  163.     Main line. e.g. '1.03 05 cxd4 Nxd4 Nc6 Bb5'
  164.     Display of 'Championship' if you have not used
  165.          Hint, Taken back moves or Viewed the Main line. Can you
  166.          beat ChessGenius without help?. 
  167. - Set-up position allows any legal position to be entered.
  168. - Take back moves to the start of game.
  169. - Step forward ( to reverse take back) to end of game.
  170. - Use the scroll buttons for quick Take back and Step forward
  171. - Hint.
  172. - Play against ChessGenius, against another player or watch 
  173.   ChessGenius play itself.
  174. - Promote pawns to any legal piece.
  175. - Recognises draw by repetitions and by the 50 move rule.
  176. - Announces a draw if there is insufficient material to win.
  177. - Reverse board.
  178. - Swap sides/Move now. 
  179. - Huge library of opening moves.
  180. - Make moves by tapping on 'from' and 'to' square or sliding.
