  7. Focus+ is a versatile photographic depth of field calculator for the Palm 
  8. Computing« Connected Organizer. Given the focal length of a lens and 
  9. desired circle of confusion it can accurately calculate the hyperfocal 
  10. distance, near/far or front/back depth of field, and optimum focus distance 
  11. and aperture. The results are tabulated by aperture to aid fast look-up in 
  12. the field and to see the results in context. Display can be switched 
  13. between full, half and third stops. Both monochrome and color displays are
  14. supported.

  16. Focus+ supports all Palm Computing« devices running Palm OS 2.0 (or later).
  17. This includes PalmPilot (Personal and Professional), Palm III series
  18. (including IIIc), Palm V/Vx, Palm VII/VIIx, Palm m100, Handspring Visor,
  19. IBM WorkPad series, TRGpro, Qualcom pdQ, Symbol SPT series and similar
  20. devices.

  22. The amount of free storage required is 40KB. A small amount of additional 
  23. storage will be used for the lens database.

  26. INSTALLATION
  27.  
  28. To install Focus+, select the FocusPlus.prc file with the Palm Install tool 
  29. to queue the application for installation on the next HotSync.
  30.  
  31. The application and lens database will be automatically backed up on your 
  32. computer (as required) on successive HotSyncs.

  35. BACKGROUND
  36.  
  37. Irrespective of focal length and aperture, only the plane at the focus 
  38. distance is truly in focus. Depth of field is the distance range in front 
  39. and behind the subject considered to be "in focus" or "sharp". It is 
  40. computed as having a circle of confusion (COC in the software) on the film 
  41. smaller than some arbitrary diameter. These circles are cross sections of 
  42. the cone of light coming to a point behind or in front of the film plane. 
  43. The circle of confusion used is dependent on the degree of enlargement, and 
  44. hence film format.
  45.  
  46. The hyperfocal distance is the focus distance at which everything from half 
  47. that distance to infinity will be "in focus". If you're a landscape 
  48. photographer, this is a very useful value to know.
  49.  
  50. Note that perceived "sharpness" may also be affected by lens aberrations 
  51. and diffraction at the respective ends of the aperture range.

  54. OPERATION
  55.  
  56. Focus+ has three modes: Hyperfocal, Depth of Field and Calculator. Select 
  57. the desired mode by selecting it from the pop-up list at top right of the 
  58. display. Also, if you've assigned Focus+ to one of your hardware buttons 
  59. (with the Prefs application), repeatedly pressing this button will cycle 
  60. through each mode in turn. Set the mode you want Focus+ to start with by 
  61. tapping the Menu silk-screened button and selecting Preferences from the 
  62. Options menu.

  64. Before you can use Focus+ you must first define the parameters for your 
  65. lenses. This is done in the Define Lenses dialog which will be opened 
  66. automatically when you first use Focus+. (You can add additional lenses or 
  67. change parameters at a later time by tapping the Menu silk-screened button 
  68. and selecting Define Lenses from the Record menu.) When you tap the New or 
  69. Edit button, you'll be asked to specify a name for the lens, its focal 
  70. length, aperture range and the default circle of confusion to be used in 
  71. calculations. The lens will be added to the Focus+ database and can be 
  72. selected from the Lens pop-up in each mode. The number of lenses you can 
  73. specify is limited only by available storage.

  75. Note that the defaults listed in the circle of confusion list are for 
  76. typical enlargement to an 8" x 10" (20cm x 25cm) print size. As an aid to 
  77. determining the optimum circle of confusion to be used, select COC 
  78. Calculator from the Options menu.

  80. Focus+ has been designed to be fully self supporting on your device. For a 
  81. description of each mode, tap the Menu silk-screened button and select Help 
  82. from the Options menu. For help on dialogs, tap the small i (information) 
  83. at top right of each dialog.

  86. REGISTRATION
  87.  
  88. Focus+ is shareware. You may use this software for a period of up to 14 
  89. days from installation for evaluation purposes. If you find the program 
  90. useful and continue to use it, you are required to register (pay for it).

  98. You'll need to provide your device's HotSync/User name when you register. 
  99. This is the name you chose for your device when the Palm Desktop software 
  100. was installed. If you've forgotten what this name was, it is displayed in 
  101. the top right corner of the device display at the completion of a HotSync 
  102. operation. It is also displayed in the Name field of the Focus+ 
  103. Registration dialog.

  105. On registration, you'll receive a personal license code that will cause the
  106. banner to be no longer displayed and enable you to continue using the
  107. software after the evaluation period. You'll also get free upgrades and
  108. technical support (e-mail only).

  111. TECHNICAL SUPPORT

  118. KNOWN ISSUES
  119.  
  120. 1. Some third-party application launchers don't cleanup correctly prior
  121. to passing control to Focus+ which can cause Focus+ to crash when the
  122. banner is dismissed. Contact the author of the launcher for a fix.
  123.  
  124. If you experience problems running Focus+ and have HackMaster or 
  125. replacement application launchers installed, first disable these to 
  126. determine the cause of the error. Such hacks and launchers may modify the 
  127. operating environment of your device. If you find an incompatibility, 
  128. please report this to the author of the hack/launcher.

  131. FLASHPRO COMPATIBILITY
  132.  
  133. If you have FlashPro installed, you can reclaim storage by moving the 
  134. Focus+ application to flash memory.
  135.  
  136. The lens database (created the first time you use Focus+) must NOT 
  137. be moved to flash memory.

  140. YEAR 2000 COMPLIANCE
  141.  
  142. Focus+ is Year 2000 compliant. The operating date range of this software is 
  143. January 1, 1904 to December 31, 2031 inclusive.
