  71. System Requirements

  74.   Lease-It! is compatible with all devices running Palm OS 2.0 and later
  75.   operating systems.  This includes all Palm models (except the Pilot 1000
  76.   and Pilot 5000 without the PalmPilot Pro Upgrade) and OEM models from IBM
  77.   Handspring, Symbol, TRG, Qualcomm (Kyocera) and Sony.  The only
  78.   requirement is sufficient memory to load the Lease-It! application.

  80.   Throughout this document, we will refer to the above models interchangeably
  81.   as the "handheld organizer", "organizer" or simply the "device".

  85. Installing
  86. ----------------------------------------

  88.   This installation assumes that you have the Desktop software installed
  89.   on your computer, and the HotSync« Manager is functioning.
  90.  
  91.   1. If a previous version of Lease-It! has been installed, please delete
  92.      it before proceeding.  If you are using a PalmOS 3.x device, first
  93.      switch to the application launcher.  Next, tap the MENU icon on the
  94.      silkscreen area of your organizer, and select "Delete..." from the
  95.      menu.  Select "Lease-It" and then tap the "Delete..." button.  If are
  96.      using an earlier version organizer, use the built-in "Memory"
  97.      application to delete the existing version of Lease-It!.

  99.   2. If you downloaded Lease-It as an archive (.zip, .sit), make sure to
  100.      extract the following files using an archive utility (such as WinZip,
  101.      ZipMagic, Stuffit Expander).

  111.   3. If you are already running "Palm Desktop" on your computer, click
  112.      on the "Install" button, and follow the prompts to install Lease-It!
  113.      Otherwise, select the "Palm Desktop" folder on your computer and run
  114.      the "Palm Install Tool" to install the LEASEIT.PRC program file.
  115.  
  116.   5. Finally, synchronize (HotSync) your organizer to transfer the
  117.      application from your computer to your organizer.

  125. Using the Application
  126. ----------------------------------------
  127.  
  128.   Lease-It! performs several lease calculations.  The most basic lease
  129.   calculation is the determining a monthly payment.  Lease-It also provides
  130.   the ability to run "what-if" scenarios to determine how various factors
  131.   will effect the desired outcome.  For example, to determine what Capitalized
  132.   Cost Reduction is required to arrive at a particular Monthly Payment.
  133.  
  134.   This flexibility allows you to:
  135.  
  136.     o Determine the car you can afford, based on monthly payments.
  137.     o Find your negotiating range when bargaining.
  138.     o Know when you're getting a good deal . . . or a bad one!
  139.  
  140.  
  141.   To launch Lease-It!, simply tap the "dollar sign" icon from within the
  142.   application launcher.  If the program has not been registered, the
  143.   registration reminder is displayed.  If you are not ready to register,
  144.   tap the "Maybe Later" button to skip to the lease worksheet selection list.

  147.   The Lease Worksheet Selection List
  148.  
  149.     The lease worksheet selection list allows you to open an existing
  150.     worksheet, or to create a new one.
  151.  
  152.     To create a new worksheet, tap the "New" button in the lower left corner
  153.     of the form.  At the Lease Worksheet Name dialog, enter the name you
  154.     would like to assign to this profile.  To do so, first tap the field
  155.     (the underlined area below Name:) to select it.  Then, using Graffiti«
  156.     or the popup keyboard, enter the desired information.  Next, tap the
  157.     "OK" button to begin working on your lease.
  158.  
  159.     If lease worksheets have already been created, simply tap the name
  160.     of the desired lease to select it.  If the desired worksheet is not
  161.     displayed, you may use the scrollbar on the right side of the screen to
  162.     scroll through the list.  You may also use the up and down buttons to
  163.     page through the list of profiles.  Then tap the lease worksheet name
  164.     to select it.

  167.   The Lease Worksheet
  168.  
  169.     The lease worksheet provides a simple, and flexible means to enter
  170.     lease parameters and to view the results of your calculations.

  172.     To select the calculation type, tap the popup list in the upper-right
  173.     corner of the form.  You may solve for the following items:
  174.  
  175.       o Capitalized Cost
  176.       o Cap. Cost Reduction
  177.       o Term
  178.       o Interest Rate / Money Factor
  179.       o Monthly Payment
  180.

  182.     Once this selection is made, enter data in the fields below to arrive
  183.     at the desired solution.  You may use Graffiti« or the onscreen
  184.     keyboard to enter this information.  Please note that in some cases,
  185.     an "Err" may be displayed, which means one or more of the lease
  186.     parameters entered is incomplete or out of range.
  187.     
  188.     Several lease parameters may be entered in alternate formats.  You may
  189.     choose Residual Value or Residual Factor, and Money Factor or Interest
  190.     Rate.  Tap the popup list to select the desired format.
  191.  
  192.     To help determine the Capitalized Cost and Capitalized Cost Reduction
  193.     values, a popup calculator is included.  Tap the "Magnifying Glass"
  194.     icon to display the respective calculator.

  213.     After entering the desired values, tap "OK" to confirm these values or
  214.     tap "Cancel" to quit and return to the worksheet.  This is a one-way
  215.     calculation, so if you change the Capitalized Cost or Cap Cost Reduction
  216.     values directly, the respective values in the popup calculators will not
  217.     be updated.  The values in the popup calculators are saved with your
  218.     lease worksheet for quick reference at a later time.

  220.     If you are finished, and would like to return to the Lease Worksheet
  221.     Selection List, tap the "Done" button at the bottom of the form.

  224.   Setting Up Tax Options
  225.  
  226.     The first time you use Lease-It!, you may want to set up your tax
  227.     options.  These options allow you to specify Sales/Use and Luxury tax
  228.     rates, as well as several other tax parameters.

  230.     To select your tax Options, tap the menu icon, select the "Options"
  231.     menu and choose "Taxes...".  To enable Sales/Use or Luxury tax
  232.     calculations, check the box preceding it.

  250.     Sales/Use tax calculations can be based upon the Monthly Payment,
  251.     Depreciation Only or the Capitalized Cost.  After selecting the
  252.     desired tax type, enter the desired tax rate (in percent).

  254.     Luxury Tax applied only to leases above a base value.  The base and
  255.     tax rate are on a sliding schedule, and for the year 2000 it is
  256.     calculated as 5% on amounts above $38,000.  This default value may
  257.     be modified as required.

  259.     If you would like to save the changes, tap "OK".  Otherwise click
  260.     "Cancel".

  416.     Residual Value is the worth of the vehicle at the end of the lease
  417.     term, after depreciation.  Typically residuals are stated as a
  418.     percentage of MSRP.  A 60% residual on a $25,000 vehicle means the
  419.     estimated depreciated value at lease-end will be $15,000.

  424.     The term is the length of time a vehicle is leased, expressed in
  425.     months.

  428.   Interest Rate / Money Factor

  430.     Typically, interest on the lease is expressed as a Money Factor
  431.     or a Lease Factor.  This is equivalent to the annual interest rate
  432.     divided by 24.  An annual interest rate of 6% results in a
  433.     Money Factor of 0.0025.

  438.     The Base is the monthly payment, prior to the addition of taxes.  This
  439.     is the sum of the monthly depreciation and finance fees.

  445.     expressed as a percentage of the base monthly payment, and is added

  448.     the monthly depreciation.
