  38. 1) ABOUT BACKDROP
  39. --------------------------------------------------------

  41.     Backdrop is an application for the Palm OS which places an image in the 
  42. background of your Palm OS device's screen. The background image stays in
  43. place when other apps are running, though you may set Backdrop to remove it
  44. for certain programs. The background image is customizable, as Backdrop 
  45. will read images saved in the ImageViewer format.

  49. 2) SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  50. --------------------------------------------------------

  52.     Backdrop requires Palm OS 2.0 or later, and a Palm device with the 
  53. original Dragonball chip (Palm III & earlier, Palm VII). If you have a more
  54. recent device (IIIx, V, or later), the correct app for your device is
  55. 'Backdrop EZ', which can be downloaded from the Twilight Edge Software
  56. homepage (http://www.twilightedge.com).
  57.     TrapWeaver is also required to install Backdrop; TrapWeaver is a system
  58. utility which prevents patching conflicts between applications that patch
  59. system traps. The latest version is included in this archive. For more 
  60. information on TrapWeaver, please download the standalone TrapWeaver archive
  61. from the Twilight Edge Software homepage. 
  62.     Backdrop uses 80K of memory. This includes the Backdrop and TrapWeaver
  63. applications, as well as the memory Backdrop uses when it installs its 
  64. system patches. Running Backdrop with less free memory may cause your Palm 
  65. device to crash.

  72. Backdrop and TrapWeaver are shareware. This archive may be freely 
  73. distributed, provided its contents are not changed in any way. If you

  111. 6) QUICKSTART
  112. --------------------------------------------------------

  114. If you have previous versions of Backdrop or TrapWeaver on your Palm
  115. device, please uninstall them before installing the new versions.
  116.  
  117. To Install & Turn On Backdrop:
  118. ------------------------------
  119.     1. Install 'Backdrop' and 'TWeaver.prc' on your Palm device.
  120.     2. Run TrapWeaver
  121.     3. Press the 'Engage' button
  122.  
  123.    The following step will reset your Palm device:
  124.     4. Press the 'OK' button on the 'Engage TrapWeaving' dialog
  125.     5. Run Backdrop
  126.     6. Press the 'Turn On Backdrop' button

  145. 7) BACKGROUND BRIGHTNESS & CONTRAST
  146. --------------------------------------------------------

  148.     When you first turn on Backdrop, or switch to an extremely light or 
  149. dark background image, the background may either be too light to see it
  150. clearly, or too dark, in which case it obscures what's on the rest of the 
  151. screen. You can change the background's brightness level, but before you do 
  152. this, you need to make sure the screen's contrast is set properly. 
  153. Follow these steps to find the correct background level for your device:
  154.  
  155.     1. Turn off Backdrop. (Makes it easier when adjusting the contrast)
  156.  
  157.     2. If you have an application that uses greyscale mode, switch to it.
  158.         (Greyscale mode is better for adjusting contrast, since it's
  159.         easier to pick up subtle changes than in black-and-white mode)
  160.  
  161.     3. Adjust your screen's contrast using the contrast wheel.
  162.  
  163.     4. Turn on Backdrop.
  164.  
  165.     5. Press the 'up' or 'down' scroll buttons to lighten or darken the 
  166.         background level. (You can see what the current background level 
  167.         value is by pressing the 'Screen Settings...' button. You can still
  168.         adjust the background level from the 'Screen Settings' form.)
  169.         Make the background as dark as possible, but not so dark that you 
  170.         can't comfortably read what's on the rest of the screen. (If the 
  171.         screen is inverted, make the background as light as possible).
  172.  
  173.     6. Switch to an application that fills the screen with text, such as 
  174.         Memo Pad, and make sure the foreground is legible. If not, go
  175.         back to Backdrop and lighten (inverted: darken) the background.
  176.         
  177.  
  178.     Once you find the correct background level, you can adjust the 
  179. background's brightness using only the contrast wheel.
  180.  
  181.

  183. 8) CHOOSING APPLICATIONS/INCOMPATIBILITIES    
  184. --------------------------------------------------------
  185.     
  186.     Some applications draw directly to the screen: Drawing apps, image 
  187. viewing apps, some games, etc. These apps won't update properly with 
  188. Backdrop installed. Other applications rely on speed, (some games, etc.), 
  189. and may run noticibly slower with Backdrop on. Backdrop uses 6.25K of 
  190. dynamic memory when it is displaying a background; There are a few apps 
  191. which won't run properly with such a large chunk of memory used up. This 
  192. can show up in the form of 'Not-Enough-Memory' error messages, erratic 
  193. behavior, or, in some cases, fatal errors, resulting in a reset. (If you 
  194. find that an application crashes because Backdrop is installed, please 
  195. notify me at 'software@twilightedge.com').
  196.     In order to deal with these problems, Backdrop provides a way for you 
  197. to temporarily turn off the background when certain apps are running, 
  198. solving the incompatibilities in most cases: From the 'Backdrop On' form, 
  199. press the 'Applications...' button to go to the 'Backdrop Applications' 
  200. form. You will see a list of applications installed on your Palm device 
  201. with checkboxes next to the app names. In order to remove the background 
  202. when an app is running, uncheck the box next to the app's name. You may 
  203. notice that some app names have no checkboxes next to them - this is 
  204. because Backdrop has a default list of incompatible apps, and it won't 
  205. give you the option of turning on the background when one of them runs.
  206.     If you have a Hack which does not update properly with Backdrop 
  207. installed, first make sure that it was installed before Backdrop: Turn 
  208. Backdrop off then back on and see if that solves the problem. If it still 
  209. doesn't run correctly, the Hack is probably drawing directly to the screen, 
  210. and won't work with Backdrop. Please notify me as well as the author of 
  211. the Hack.

  215. 9) SELECTING THE BACKGROUND
  216. --------------------------------------------------------
  217.  
  218.     Backdrop will read images in ImageViewer format and let you use them as 
  219. backgrounds. You can find image files in this format on the net, (see
  220. 'WHERE TO FIND BACKGROUND IMAGES' below), or create your own (see 'CREATING 
  221. YOUR OWN BACKGROUNDS' below). 
  222.     The preferred image size is 160x160; Backdrop won't read images smaller 
  223. than this, and if they are much larger, they may take up too much memory to 
  224. load. (Unlike the ImageViewer app, Backdrop uses only dynamic memory for 
  225. loading images, which means it has a smaller maximum image size).
  226.     To select a background, press the 'Backgrounds...' button on the 
  227. 'Backdrop On' form. This will bring you to the 'Choose Background Image' 
  228. form, which will display a list of the available image files installed on 
  229. your Palm device. 
  230.     If the selected image is larger than 160x160, an 'Align' button will 
  231. appear on the right side of the form. Pressing this button will bring you to
  232. the alignment screen, where you may drag the image with your stylus to 
  233. center it. Once you are done aligning, tap the graffiti area or press any of
  234. the hardware buttons to return to the 'Choose Background Image' form. 
  235.     If an image is in greyscale, it will automatically be converted to 1-bit
  236. (black and white) before being placed in the background. (Backdrop only 
  237. converts a local copy and does not change the image file). Greyscale images 
  238. are converted to 1-bit using a simple threshold method - for best results, 
  239. you may need to convert the image to 1-bit yourself, using an imaging
  240. program on your computer.

  242.     In general, lighter images with large areas of white pixels, such as
  243. drawings or logos, make the best backgrounds. If you have a darker image,
  244. you might make it show up better by inverting the background. If your dark
  245. image is a photo or illustration, which appears odd when inverted, inverting 
  246. both the screen and the background will probably give you the best results.

  250. 10) DELETING IMAGES
  251. --------------------------------------------------------

  253.     If there are images you want to delete, select 'Delete Images...' from
  254. the 'Options' menu to go to the 'Delete Images' form. Click on an image's
  255. name in the list to delete it. (You will be given a chance to confirm this).

  259. 11) SCREEN SETTINGS
  260. --------------------------------------------------------
  261.  
  262.     Press the 'Settings...' button in the 'Backdrop On' form to go to
  263. the 'Backdrop Settings' form. Here, you'll see several controls:
  264.  
  265. - 'Reinstall On Reset' Checkbox (only appears with OS 3.0 or later)
  266.     When this box is checked, Backdrop will automatically reinstall
  267. itself when the device is reset; Otherwise you will have to manually 
  268. turn Backdrop back on.
  269.  
  270. - 'Display As Startup Screen' Checkbox
  271.     This option will delay drawing the foreground when the device gets
  272. turned on, showing only the background image. This background startup 
  273. screen will only display when the device has been turned on from the 
  274. power button, and not from any of the other buttons. The user can choose 
  275. how long to display the startup screen by selecting from the 'Delay:' 
  276. drop-down menu. To instantly bring up the foreground while the startup 
  277. screen is being displayed, tap the screen or press a button.
  278.  
  279. - 'Invert Screen' Checkbox
  280.     Checking this box will invert your screen - this exchanges black for 
  281. white and white for black on your display. It will also cause your 
  282. background image to appear as a negative of itself. (If you wish to fix 
  283. this, you can invert the background as well by checking the 'Invert 
  284. Background' checkbox).
  285.     If you simply want to have an inverted screen without any background, 
  286. you can load the blank image from the sample images page, 
  287. (http://www.twilightedge.com/images), and select it as the 
  288. background.
  289.     You may notice that the 'Background Level' value changes when you invert
  290. or uninvert the screen; Since the best value for the background level
  291. depends on whether or not the screen is inverted, Backdrop saves a 
  292. different value for each option. (In practice, the best background value for
  293. the inverted screen is usually one level greater (darker) than the correct 
  294. value for the normal screen, though individual devices may vary - see 
  295. 'BACKGROUND BRIGHTNESS & CONTRAST' above for finding your screen's correct 
  296. background level value. This applies to both normal and inverted screens).

  298. - 'Invert Background' Checkbox
  299.     Checking the 'Invert Background' checkbox will invert the background
  300. image before placing it in the background. If your screen is in normal mode,
  301. this will exchange grey for white and white for grey. If your screen is 
  302. inverted, this will switch the grey and black pixels.

  306. 12) WHERE TO FIND BACKGROUND IMAGES

  317. 13) CREATING YOUR OWN BACKGROUNDS
  318. --------------------------------------------------------

  320. If you have a PC:
  321.     The Image Viewer application by Art Dahm comes with a Windows app 
  322.     called Image Converter, which will convert several image formats, 
  323.     including GIF and JPEG, into Image Viewer format, ready for installing 
  324.     on your Palm device. You can download Image Converter from Dahm's page 
  325.     at 'http://palm.dahm.com/viewer.html', or you can get it at 
  326.     'http://www.palmgear.com'.    
  327.

  329. If you have a Mac:
  330.     You can use the shareware program, Graphic Converter to save to 
  331.     ImageViewer format. You can get Graphic Converter at 
  332.     'http://www.lemkesoft.de/us_gcdownload.html'
  333.     
  334.     To save to ImageViewer, select 'PDB' as the format from the
  335.     'Save As...' dialog. If you are saving a 4- or 16- color image, press
  336.     the 'Options' button on the dialog and make sure you have checked the 
  337.     box next to version 1. For black & white images, check version 0.
  338.  
  339.  
  340.     While Backdrop will read Image Viewer images saved as 2- or 4-bit, it
  341. converts them to 1-bit backgrounds using a simple threshold, so for best 
  342. results you should dither your images with an imaging program, then 
  343. save/convert them as 1-bit Image Viewer format. 
  344.     The preferred size for a background is 160x160. Backdrop won't read 
  345. anything smaller than this.

  352. 14) REGISTERING
  353. --------------------------------------------------------
  354.  
  355.     Backdrop is shareware. If you decide to keep it, please register it. 
  356. Registration will remove the 'UNREGISTERED' message in the background and
  357. also entitles you to future versions of Backdrop, as well as Backdrop EZ, 
  358. free of charge.
  359.     Registration is $18, and is currently only available through 
  360. PalmGear H.Q. They can take orders either through their secure server online,
  361. or over the phone at (800) 741-9070. Their page for ordering Twilight Edge 
  362. Software titles online is:

  365.     Make sure you include your correct, case-sensitive hotsync username 
  366. (this will be used to generate the registration code), and your email 
  367. address.
  368.     Once your registration has been processed, you should receive your code 
  369. by email within a few days. Enter the code in the registration window by 
  370. selecting 'Register...' from Backdrop's 'Options' menu. Please save your 
  371. code, as you will need it for future versions, or if you have to reinstall 
  372. Backdrop after a hard reset.

  376. 15) SITE LICENSES FOR ORGANIZATIONS

  379.     Do you have a logo that you'd like to display on the screens of the 
  380. members of your group, organization, or company? Backdrop is available at 
  381. a reduced price with your custom logo as the default background. (Custom 
  382. logo version won't allow the background to be changed). You may also specify 
  383. a default set of blocked applications to save your members time.

  388. 16) KNOWN INCOMPATIBILITIES/BUGS

  391. The following software is known to be incompatible with Backdrop:

  393. - Fitaly Keyboard: Keyboard won't show up when background is in place.
  394.     Workaround: Disable Backdrop on apps with which you use the keyboard.
