QuickTime is Apple's video technology that allows you to play high-quality video directly on your computer. QuickTime is a set of extensions that, when used with movie software, lets you view video clips or even full-length video productions. Features introduced in QuickTime 4.0 included new audio controls for balance, volume, bass, and treble; ImageViewer support for BMP, GIF, JPEG, PICT, PNG, SGI, TIFF, Adobe Photoshop, and FlashPix; compression support for MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) files, Sorenson Video, QDesign Music, Qualcomm PureVoice, H.261, GSM, and DVI; and video support for AVI, DV, Macromedia Flash, OpenDML, GIF, and FLC. All this and a flashy new interface, too (see screen shot). Version 4.1 adds support for variable bit rate MP3 files, better streaming for corporate clients, and multiple movie playback support via SMIL.
