-
-
The doubling cube allows players to bet on the outcome of the game.
- To begin with, either player may turn the cube one position and offer
- it to their opponent. If the opponent accepts, the winner will now score
- 2 points for a win, 4 points for a gammon or 6 points for a backgammon.
- Subsequent turns of the cube double the number of points again,
- up to a maximum of 64 points for a win.
-
-
Once you have turned the cube your opponent "owns" it. You cannot turn
- it again until he has turned it, and you own it again. At the beginning
- of the game neither player owns the cube, so either may turn it.
-
-
To offer a double, simply click on the doubling cube with the left mouse
- button, or select Double from the Game menu. Initially the cube shows 64,
- which means no double has yet been proposed.
-
-
Choosing the right time to make a double is a fine judgement. If you
- are certain of winning offering a double can be a big mistake. Your opponent
- will simply resign and thus save himself from a possible gammon or worse.
- So the art of doubling is to offer the cube to your opponent whilst he still
- has a chance of winning, but your position looks likely to improve.
