  3. You will find this utility to be extremely helpful in keeping 
  4. your files up-to-date and your directories in "synch" across
  5. your multiple computers.
  6.  
  7. Even on a single machine, WinUpD8R can be a very useful tool, as
  8. you'll find out as you learn more about its various capabilities.
  9.  
  10. WinUpD8R can be anything from a simple "copy utility" to a 
  11. programmable maintenance engine.  Since WinUpD8R works with 
  12. your valuable data files, PLEASE take the time to familiarize 
  13. yourself with its operation before attempting ambitious 
  14. operations on your computer!
  15.  
  16. WARNING!!! - WinUpD8R bases its decisions on the time/date stamp 
  17. of each file.  This stamp is updated to the present date and time 
  18. each time a file is modified by an application.  If the clock in 
  19. one of your computers is inoperative, the stamp used by this 
  20. computer will be incorrect.  Do not use WinUpD8R or any similar 
  21. product on computers with inoperative clocks.

  23. Because of the importance of this file information you should 
  24. immediately have any computer with this problem repaired by a 
  25. qualified computer repair shop.

  33. The archive file UPD8R_42.ZIP (UPD8R.ZIP from CompuServe) should
  34. contain the following files:
  35.  
  36. FILE_ID.DIZ - Program description used by BBSs
  37. SETUPWU.EXE - WinUpD8R's installation program
  38. README.TXT - This file
  39. VENDINFO.DIZ - Distribution information file - partially encoded
  40. VENDOR.TXT - Information of interest to shareware distributors 
  41.     and BBSs in ASCII format
  42.  
  43. The files below are in compressed format and will be expanded by 
  44. SETUPWU or OWSETUP - they CANNOT be used directly:
  45.  
  46. BWCC.DL_ - Borland graphics support DLL - will be moved to the
  47.         /WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory by SETUPWU.EXE (if needed)
  48. HELPFILE.WR_ - The help documentation in Windows 3.1 Write format
  49. REGISTER.TX_ - Registration form in ASCII format
  50. WINUPD42.EX_ - The executable program file
  51. WINUPD42.HL_ - The help file supporting WinUpD8R

  54. To install WinUpD8R from a floppy disk received from 
  55. Open Windows:
  56.  
  57. 1.  While in Windows, insert the floppy disk in the drive.
  58.  
  59. 2.  Open File Manager and select the floppy disk.
  60.  
  61. 3.  Double click on the file OWSETUP.EXE to run it.
  62.  
  63. 4.  Follow the on-screen directions.

  66. To install WinUpD8R starting with only a copy of UPD8R_42.ZIP
  67. (UPD8R.ZIP if obtained from CompuServe):
  68.  
  69. 1.  Create a temporary directory (C:\WU will do) on your 
  70. hard drive.  
  71.  
  72. 2.  Copy UPD8R_42.ZIP to this directory.
  73.  
  74. 3.  Unzip the file using PKUnZip or other "UNZIPper".  This 
  75. should produce the files listed in the packing list above.
  76.  
  77. 4.  Run SETUPWU.EXE from Windows.  This will take you through 
  78. the procedure of installing WinUpD8R on your hard disk.  Do
  79. NOT install TO the temporary directory - C:\WU in the example
  80. above.

  82. 5.  You may delete all of the files in the temporary directory 
  83. from your hard drive after completing the installation process, 
  84. but remember to save a copy of UPD8R_42.ZIP on a floppy for 
  85. friends who may wish to try WinUpD8R.
