  8. FaiSyn Automatic Filter Synthesizer For Windows

  10. 1.0 INTRODUCTION:
  11.  
  12. FAISYN is a low cost, effective alternative to expensive commer-
  13. cial filter synthesis packages.  The program has been used 
  14. successfully to design countless lumped element filters and 
  15. diplexers from 10's of KHz to 1.5GHz  and is the result of many 
  16. years experience in filter design.  Many designers know that 
  17. filter design is often an iterative process.  In the old days a 
  18. lot of tedious number grinding was required to arrive at an 
  19. optimal solution.  FAISYN eases the burden by allowing the 
  20. designer to quickly synthesize and simulate a variety of circuits.
  21. These circuits may also be exported and simulated on one of 
  22. the popular commercial circuit simulators (FAISYN currently 
  23. supports PSPICE-TM Microsim, MMICAD-TM Optotek and TOUCHSTONE-
  24. TM HP/EESOF circuit formats).

  27. NOTE: An evaluation version of PSPICE capable of running FAISYN 
  28. filter circuits is available at very low cost from Microsim Corp
  29. or for free from the EDN magazine BBS.
  30.  
  31. 1.1 INSTALLATION:
  32.  
  33. 1) Create the directory C:\FAISYN on your hard drive.
  34. 2) Copy the files from floppy to C:\FAISYN, unzip if necessary.
  35. 3) Under the Windows Program Manager:
  36.     -Select File-New-Program, click OK
  37.     -Type C:\FAISYN\FAISYN.EXE in the command line box.
  38.     -Type C:\FAISYN in the working directory box, click OK.
  39.     -Faisyn is now installed in the current active Program 
  40.     Group (ie, Main, Accessories, etc).

  43. Alternatively, the program my be started by selecting File-Run in
  44. Program Manager and typing c:\faisyn\faisyn.exe in the Command 
  45. Line Box.  
  46.  
  47.  
  48. 1.2 RUNNING FAISYN FOR THE FIRST TIME:
  49.  
  50. FAISYN uses modern filter design theory to compute lumped element 
  51. low, high and bandpass filters.  All filters are based on 
  52. normalized low pass prototypes. The design and simulation process
  53. takes place in two seperate windows.  The "General Filter Design 
  54. Window" is where the user inputs the desired design parameters 
  55. such as source and load resistances and filter order N.  The 
  56. filter type (Butterworth, Chebyshev, etc), transformation (Low 
  57. Pass,High Pass, Band Pass, etc) and circuit file format (MMICAD, 
  58. PSPICE or TOUCHSTONE) are also selected in this window. After all
  59. the parameters have been set the user selects the synthesize 
  60. button to calculate and display the network.  The program may 
  61. prompt youfor additional information during this process depending 
  62. upon the design parameters chosen. You may respecify and 
  63. synthesize the network as many times as you like.
  64.  
  65. When a suitable design has been found you may choose the simulate
  66. button to open the "Network Analyzer" window.  Select the sweep
  67. button to see the response of your network.  The default settings
  68. will display the magnitude of S21 and S11 of your network in dB 
  69. format.  You may choose a variety of other display variables and
  70. plot formats by setting the corresponding controls.  You may zoom 
  71. in to a particulate portion of the plot by adjusting the scaling
  72. on the horizontal and vertical axis.  The plot title may be 
  73. changed by selecting "Options".  Select "Print" to get a hardcopy 
  74. of your simulation plot.  You may want to set your printer to 
  75. landscape mode for best results.  When you finish your simulation 
  76. select "Close" to return to the "General Filter Design Window".
  77.  
  78. There are several options that have not been completed in this 
  79. release of the program.  These include the "USER DEFINED" and 
  80. "ELLIPTIC" filter responses and Smith Chart plot capability.  
  81. Although displayed, they cannot be selected by the user.

  84. 2.0 REGISTRATION:
  85.  
  86. There are many enhancements planned for the program, however the 
  87. rate at which these will be implemented will depend on the 
  88. response from the user community.  FAISYN is SHAREWARE and is not
  89. free.  The beauty of shareware is that it allows the user to try 
  90. the software for a period of time to determine if it is truly 
  91. useful before paying for it.  Registering the product gives me
  92. motivation to make improvements and allows me to cover some of
  93. the costs involved (software, books & hardware, etc).  So try it 
  94. for thirty days and let your conscience be your guide!  
  95.  
  96. For those of you without a conscience (just kidding!) I have add-
  97. itional incentives including a set of filter application 
  98. notes and at least one free (probably more...) update to a future
  99. revision of FAISYN.

  102. 2.1 "IN THE WORKS":
  103.  
  104. Another product FAISYN-MATCH is also "in the works". FAISYN-MATCH 
  105. aids in the design of broad band impedance matching networks and 
  106. has been used to design state of the art high dynamic range RF 
  107. and Microwave amplifiers. These are real world production 
  108. designs, both discrete and monolithic. Again, registered users 
  109. will be notified when this product is released.

  112. greatly appreciated.

  124. The current version of FaiSyn Automatic Filter Synthesizer is 2.1

  129.     1) Added distributed parallel line coupled filters.
  130.     2) Added distributed stepped impedance resonator filters.
  131.     3) Added additional design hints.
  132.     4) Added solid & dashed lines for hard copy plots.
  133.     5) Fixed option buttons to reflect their availability during design & simulation.
  134.     6) Resized many of the design windows to prevent clipping on low resolution systems.
  135.     7) Added EMAIL address to the author (still evaluating my present provider,
  136.     address could still change.  Snail mail is still OK).

  146. The use of FAISYN is subject to the following terms and condi-
  147. tions.

  149. FAISYN is copyrighted material. It is protected by the copy-
  150. right laws of the United States. You may not make any changes
  151. or modifications to FAISYN. You may not decompile, disassemble
  152. or otherwise reverse engineer the software in any way.
  153.  
  154. You may use FAISYN on a trial basis provided you do not violate
  155. the protection afforded the licensed software by the copyright
  156. laws, and you agree to the terms of the license agreement. If 
  157. you continue to use FAISYN past a 30 day evaluation period you
  158. are obligated to purchase a license for its use.
  159.  
  160. You may use FAISYN on a Local Area Network providing that a 
  161. license is obtained for the number of users that may concurrent-
  162. ly use the software.  Information on site licenses is available
  163. by calling the author.

  201. 4.0                     Limited Warranty

  204. Carriage House Engineering does not warrant that the licensed 
  205. software will meet your requirements or that the operation of 
  206. the software will be uninterrupted or error free.  The warranty
  207. does not cover any media or documentation which has been 
  208. subjected to damage or abuse by you or others. The software 
  209. warranty does not cover any copy  of the licensed software which
  210. has been altered or changed in any way.

  212. ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES INCLUDING ANY WARRANTIES OF MERCHANT-
  213. ABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE ARE LIMITED TO THE
  214. TERM OF THE EXPRESS WARRANTIES. Some States do not allow limit-
  215. ations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above 
  216. limitation may not apply to you.

  224. or damage caused by the licensed software that may result from 
  225. using the licensed software. This includes, but is not limited 
  226. to, computer hardware, computer software, operating systems, 
  227. and any computer or computing accessories. End user agrees to 
  228. hold Carriage House Engineering harmless for any problems 
  229. arising from the use of the software.

  231. Carriage House Engineering SHALL NOT IN ANY CASE BE LIABLE FOR 
  232. ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, INDIRECT OR OTHER SIMI-
  233. LAR DAMAGES ARISING FROM ANY BREACH OF THESE WARRANTIES EVEN IF 
  234. Carriage House Engineering OR ITS AGENTS OR DISTRIBUTORS HAVE 
  235. BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.  Some states 
  236. do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or con-
  237. sequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may

  244. 5.0                     FAISYN Distribution

  248. You are granted a limited license to copy FAISYN only for the 
  249. trial use of others subject to the terms of this software 
  250. license agreement described herein, and the conditions 
  251. described below are met:

  253. FAISYN MUST be copied in an unmodified form and MUST contain 
  254. the following files:
  255.                 FAISYN.exe
  256.                 FAISYN.txt
  257.

  259. No fee, charge or other compensation may be accepted or 
  260. requested by anyone without the express written permission
  261. of Carriage House Engineering.
  262.  
  263. Public Domain Disk Vendors may not charge a fee for FAISYN 
  264. itself. However you may include FAISYN on a diskette for which
  265. you charge a nominal distribution fee. The purchaser of said
  266. diskette must be informed in advance that the fee paid to 
  267. acquire the diskette does NOT relieve said purchaser from 
  268. paying the Registration Fee for FAISYN if said purchaser uses
  269. FAISYN.

  271. Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (Sysops) may 
  272. post FAISYN for downloading by their users without written 
  273. permission only as long as the above conditions are met.  A
  274. fee may be charged for access to the bbs as long as no specific
  275. fee is charged for downloading FAISYN files without first 
  276. obtaining express written permission from Carriage House 
  277. Engineering to charge such a fee.
  278.  
  279. Distributors of public domain and user supported software, 
  280. such as disk vending services, may not charge a fee for FAISYN
  281. itself. However you may include FAISYN on a diskette for which
  282. you charge a nominal distribution fee. The purchaser of said 
  283. diskette must be informed in advance that the fee paid to 
  284. acquire the diskette does NOT relieve said purchaser from 
  285. paying the Registration Fee for FAISYN.

  287. The above constitutes the license agreement for FAISYN.  It 
  288. supersedes any and all previous license agreements.
