  3.  lynx - a general purpose distributed information browser for the World 
  4.  Wide Web
  5.  
  6. 2 SYNOPSIS
  7.      Lynx [options] [path or URL]

  9.      use "lynx -help" to display a complete list of current options.
  10.  
  11. 2 DESCRIPTION
  12.  Lynx is a fully-featured World Wide Web (WWW) client for users running
  13.  cursor-addressable, character-cell display devices (e.g., vt100 terminals,
  14.  vt100 emulators running on PCs or Macs, or any other "curses-oriented"
  15.  display). It will display hypertext markup language (HTML) documents con-
  16.  taining links to files residing on the local system, as well as files
  17.  residing on remote systems running Gopher, HTTP, FTP, WAIS, and NNTP
  18.  servers.  Current versions of Lynx run on UNIX and VMS.
  19.  
  20.  Lynx can be used to access information on the World Wide Web, or to build
  21.  information systems intended primarily for local access.  For example, Lynx
  22.  has been used to build several Campus Wide Information Systems (CWIS).  In
  23.  addition, Lynx can be used to build systems isolated within a single LAN.

  25. 2 OPTIONS
  26.  At start up, Lynx will load any local file or remote URL specified at 
  27.  the command line.  For help with URLs, press "?" or "h" while running
  28.  Lynx.  Then follow the link titled, "Help on URL's."
  29.

  31.        If the only argument is '-', then Lynx expects to receive
  32.        the arguments from stdin. This is to allow for the
  33.        potentially very long command line that can be associated
  34.        with the -get_data or -post_data arguments (see below).
  35.        Encase it in double-quotes ("-").
  36.  
  37.   -anonymous
  38.        used to specify the anonymous account.
  39.  
  40.   -ascii
  41.        disable kanji code translation when Japanese mode is on.
  42.  
  43.   -auth=ID:PASSWD
  44.        set authorization ID and password for protected documents
  45.        at startup.
  46.  
  47.   -book
  48.        use the bookmark page as the startfile.  The default or command
  49.        line startfile is still set for the Main screen command, and will
  50.        be used if the bookmark page is unavailable or blank.

  52.   -buried_news
  53.        toggles scanning of news articles for buried references, and
  54.        converts them to news links.  Not recommended because email
  55.        addresses enclosed in angle brackets will be converted to
  56.        false news links, and uuencoded messages can be trashed.

  58.   -cache=NUMBER
  59.        set the NUMBER of documents cached in memory.  The default is 10.

  62.        enable case-sensitive string searching.
  63.  
  64.   -cfg=FILENAME
  65.        specifies a Lynx configuration file other than the default lynx.cfg.

  68.        exit on left-arrow in startfile, and disable save to disk.

  70.   -crawl
  71.        with -traversal, output each page to a file.
  72.        with -dump, format output as with -traversal, but to stdout.

  74.   -display=DISPLAY
  75.        set the display variable for X rexeced programs.

  78.        dumps the formatted output of the default document or one specified
  79.        on the command line to standard out.  This can be used in the
  80.        following way: lynx -dump http://www.w3.org/default.html.

  82.   -editor=EDITOR
  83.        enable edit mode using the specified EDITOR. (vi, ed, emacs, etc.)

  85.   -emacskeys
  86.        enable emacs-like key movement.
  87.  
  88.   -enable_scrollback
  89.        toggle compatibility with comm programs' scrollback keys
  90.        (may be incompatible with some curses packages).

  92.   -error_file=FILE
  93.        define a file where Lynx will report HTTP access codes.

  96.        set kanji code to EUC when Japanese mode is on.

  99.        include all versions of files in local VMS directory listings.

  102.        forces the first document to be interpreted as HTML.

  180.        toggles pseudo-ALTs for inlines with no ALT string.

  183.        restricts access to URLs in the starting realm.

  186.        flushes the cache on a proxy server
  187.        (only the first document affected).

  189.   -restrictions=[option][,,option]...
  190.        allows a list of services to be disabled selectively.  The following
  191.        list is printed if no options are specified.

  193.        all - restricts all options.

  195.        bookmark - disallow changing the location of the bookmark file.
  196.  
  197.        bookmark_exec - disallow execution links via the bookmark file.
  198.  
  199.        change_exec_perms - disallow changing the eXecute permission on
  200.            files (but still allow it for directories) when local file
  201.            management is enabled.

  203.        default - same as command line option -anonymous. Disables default
  204.            services for anonymous users. Currently set to all restricted
  205.            except for:  inside_telnet, outside_telnet, inside_news,
  206.            inside_ftp, outside_ftp, inside_rlogin, outside_rlogin, jump,
  207.            mail and goto.  Defaults are setable within userdefs.h.

  209.        dired_support - disallow local file management.

  211.        disk_save - disallow saving binary files to disk in the download
  212.            menu.

  214.        download - disallow downloaders in the download menu.

  216.        editor - disallow editing.

  218.        exec - disable execution scripts.

  220.        exec_frozen - disallow the user from changing the local execution
  221.            option.

  223.        file_url - disallow using G)oto to go to file: URL's.

  228.            (utmp required for selectivity).

  268.        disable recognition of rlogin commands.

  271.        require .www_browsable files to browse directories.

  273.   -show_cursor
  274.        If enabled the cursor will not be hidden in the right hand corner but
  275.        will instead be positioned at the start of the currently selected
  276.        link.  show cursor is the default for systems without FANCY_CURSES
  277.        capabilities, and the default configuration can be changed in
  278.        userdefs.h.

  280.   -sjis
  281.        set kanji code to Shift JIS when Japanese mode is on.
  282.  
  283.   -source
  284.        works the same as dump but outputs HTML source instead of formatted
  285.        text.

  287.   -telnet
  288.        disable recognition of telnet commands.

  290.   -term=TERM
  291.        tell Lynx what terminal type to assume its talking to.  (This may be
  292.        useful for remote execution, when, for example, Lynx connects to a
  293.        remote TCP/IP port that starts a script that, in turn, starts another
  294.        Lynx process.)

  296.   -trace
  297.        turns on WWW trace mode.
  298.  
  299.   -traversal
  300.        traverse all http links derived from startfile.  When used with
  301.        -crawl, each link that begins with the same string as startfile
  302.        is output to a file, intended for indexing.  See CRAWL.announce
  303.        for more information.

  305.   -underscore
  306.        toggles use of _underline_ format in dumps.
  307.  
  308.   -validate
  309.        accept only http URLs (for validation).  Complete security
  310.        restrictions also are implemented.

  313.        print version information

  315.   -vikeys
  316.        enable vi-like key movement.

  319.  o Use Up arrow and Down arrow to scroll through hypertext links.
  320.  o Right arrow or Return will follow a highlighted hypertext link.
  321.  o Left Arrow will retreat from a link.
  322.  o Type "h" or "?" for online help and descriptions of key-stroke commands.
  323.  o Type "k" for a complete list of the current key-stroke command mappings.

  341.  Lynx has incorporated code from a variety of sources along the way.
  342.  The earliest versions of Lynx included code from Earl Fogel of Computing
  343.  Services at the University of Saskatchewan, who implemented HYPERREZ
  344.  in the UN*X environment.  HYPERREZ was developed by Niel Larson of 
  345.  Think.com and served as the model for the early versions of Lynx.
  346.  Those versions also incorporated libraries from the UN*X Gopher clients
  347.  developed at the University of Minnesota, and the later versions of 
  348.  Lynx rely on the WWW client library code developed by Tim Berners-Lee
  349.  and the WWW community.  Also a special thanks to Foteos Macrides who
  350.  ported much of Lynx to VMS and to everyone on the net who has contributed
  351.  to Lynx's development either directly (through comments or bug reports)
  352.  or indirectly (through inspiration and development of other systems).
