  28.  What is Radmin ?
  29. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  30. It is a remote access system, which  enables you to work on the remote computer,
  31. from you own computer.                                                 
  32. You will see a remote computer screen in the window of your computer or on the 
  33. whole screen of your computer.
  34. Your mouse and keyboard are transferred to the remote computer.
  35. So, you can work with the remote computer, as if you are sitting in front of it.
  36.  
  37. The remote computer can be anywhere in the Internet or in your local network.
  38.  
  39. You don't need a fast network to work with the remote computer by using Radmin.
  40.  
  41. Even if you are connected via MODEM , you will reach a reasonable screen 
  42. update speed (about 5-10 screen updates per second).
  43.  
  44. And if you are using LOCAL NETWORK you will reach a realtime update speed
  45. (about 100 - 500 screen updates per second ).
  46. Sometimes, if you use Radmin in a full-screen mode , you may just 
  47. forget , that you are working on the REMOTE computer ! :)
  48.  
  49. Radmin consists of two parts:
  50. 1) A server, which generates a display.
  51. 2) A client (viewer), which actually draws the display on your screen. 
  52.  
  53. So, to get started with Radmin you must run a server, and then get 
  54. connected with it through a client (viewer).
  55.  
  56. A current version of Radmin requires a TCP/IP connection between 
  57. the server and the viewer.

  61.  What makes it different from other systems?
  62. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  64. The speed : All other remote control systems work much more slowly
  65. than Radmin. 
  66. For example, when I tested a famous program that is widely used, the VNC 
  67. (Virtual Network Computing, AT&T product ),
  68. I found out that Radmin works 150 times (!!!) faster than the VNC does.
  69.  
  70. The test was performed on this configuration:
  71. Server: 800 X 600 65535 colors, OS - WindowsNT 4.0 Service pack 4
  72. Client: 800 X 600 256   colors, OS - Windows95
  73. Ethernet 10Mbit local network.

  79. +Run as Service
  80. The Radmin server can work as SERVICE on WinNT and Win9X,
  81. which allows you to logon and logoff the user remotely.

  83. +Video hook driver technology is used
  84. Radmin uses a video hook kernel mode driver on Windows NT to catch screen changes.
  85. This allows to work on the remote computer with incredible 'realtime' update speed
  86. (hundrends of screen updates per second).

  89. Windowed and full-screen view modes.
  90. Full-screen mode allows you to see the remote screen  on the entire screen 
  91. of your display.

  93. +Telnet server
  94. Additionally to screen sharing, Radmin provides a Telnet access 
  95. to the remote computer, when its server runs on the Windows NT.

  97. +Password protection
  98. Access to a remote computer is controlled by a password. Radmin uses a 
  99. challenge-response password authentication method, based on DES encryption.

  101. +Optional encryption (DES-56bit) of all data streams. 
  102. With encryption enabled, the perfomance will go down several times.

  104. +IP filter. 
  105. This feature allows access to the Radmin server only from specified 
  106. IP addresses and subnets.

  108. +Hi-resolution modes are supported by Radmin.
  109. Display resolutions up to 2048 X 2048 X 32bit color are supported 
  110. by Radmin.

  114.  System requirements.
  115. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  116. No special requirements for hardware:
  117. If you have Windows installed, the program will run.
  118. It even runs on 386\8Mb RAM with Win95.
  119.  
  120. NOTE: the program will still operate successfully, when a display, a mouse and 
  121. a keyboard are disconnected from the remote computer (but some computers do not
  122. boot successfully, when a keyboard is not connected).

  124. For all operation systems :
  125. The computer must have TCP/IP installed.
  126.  
  127. Windows 95/98 :
  128. Nothing special.
  129.  
  130. Windows NT 4.0 :
  131. Service pack 4 or higher is required.
  132. Administrator rights are required, if you want to install the service or 
  133. the driver.

  137.  Installation.
  138. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  139. Before installation :
  140. For all users:
  141. Uninstall a previous version of Radmin, if it is present.
  142.  
  143. For WindowsNT users: 
  144. *) If you want install the service or the driver, you  should  have 
  145.    administrator rights.
  146. *) If you want to use the Radmin server with a video hook driver
  147.    you must uninstall any other Remote Control software , which uses 
  148.    Video hook driver technology.
  149.    Running more than one Video hook drivers together can lead 
  150.    to a system crash while booting.
  151.    If you have a problem while booting with the Radmin driver, you can 
  152.    press repeatedly (5 times per sec) a key '1' while booting and 
  153.    the Radmin driver will not load.

  156. Installation:
  157. 1) Unpack installation files.
  158. 2) Run setup.exe from unpacked distribution.
  159. 3) Follow setup instructions.
  160.  
  161. After installation, the Radmin server or the Radmin client (viewer) can be 
  162. started from Start menu.
  163.  
  164. You can also start from menu the Radmin Server setup , where you can :
  165. set the Radmin Server to the automatic startup with Windows , 
  166. set a password for the network access to a server.

  170.  Radmin viewer command-line switches
  171. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  173. Radmin viewer has command line options, which enable you to get connected 
  174. to the host without using a phonebook.

  177.  radmin.exe /connect:xxxxx:nnnn other_options
  178.  
  179. Examples: 
  180.  radmin.exe /connect:server:1000 /fullscreen /encrypt
  181.  radmin.exe /connect:10.0.0.100:4000 /telnet
  182.  radmin.exe /connect:server /through:gate

  184. Options:
  185.  /connect:xxxxx:nnnn 
  186.     specify an address and a port of the server. 
  187.     This option is required for connection without a phonebook.

  190.     specify an address and a port of the intermediate server

  196.     specify to display remote screen in fullscreen mode

  215.  Radmin server command-line switches
  216. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  218.   The Radmin server has several command line switches.
  219. Normally, all settings can be set through installation process or 
  220. by using 'Radmin server setup' and the user need not use any of the command 
  221. line switches.
  222.  
  223. These switches are intended to be used by System Administrators.
  224. Using these switches you can manually install\uninstall parts of Radmin,
  225. such as the service and the driver, set a password and a port number.
  226.  
  227. r_server.exe <switches>
  228.  
  229. r_server switches :
  230.  
  231.  /setup - shows a dialog box in which you can install the service and the driver, 
  232.           set a password, port number, IP filter and other options 
  233.           for the server.
  234. Example: r_server.exe /setup
  235.  
  236.  [/port:xxxx] [/pass:xxxxx] - if there are no other switches specified,
  237.                except /port and /pass, r_server runs as the Radmin server, 
  238.                with a password and a port from the a command line or 
  239.                from the registry, if corresponding switch is not present.
  240. Example: r_server.exe
  241. Example: r_server.exe /pass:mypass
  242. Example: r_server.exe /port:5505
  243. Example: r_server.exe /port:3333 /pass:qwerty
  244.  
  245.  /save [/port:xxxx] [/pass:xxxxx] - saves the password and the port 
  246.                in the default program settings in the registry. 
  247.                If you do not specify the port or\and the password 
  248.                using this option, the default port or\and the empty password 
  249.                will be saved. 
  250. Example: r_server.exe /port:5505 /pass:qwerty /save  
  251.  This saves values of the port and password in the registry, these values will
  252.  be used, when r_server.exe is executed without parameters (/pass or /port)
  253.  in command line.
  254. Example: r_server.exe /save
  255.  This saves the default port and the empty password in the registry .
  256.  
  257.  /install    - install the service (Win95/98 or WinNT) and the driver (WinNT)
  258. IMPORTANT NOTE: To be installed, the driver (raddrv.dll) must be
  259.                 placed in System32 directory, which is in your Windows directory.
  260. Example: r_server.exe /install
  261.  
  262.  /uninstall  - uninstall the service and the driver, if present.
  263. NOTE : Failure to remove the service usually indicates that it was not installed. 
  264. Example: r_server.exe /uninstall

  290. If you find that some part of Radmin crashes sometimes or works 
  291. incorrectly, please, send me e-mail with your description of the problem.

  293. In your report you must specify:
  294. 1) OS type on a server side (remote computer side).
  295.  
  296. 2) OS type on a client side (viewer side).
  297.  
  298. 3) Type of installation of the Radmin server 
  299.    -   application
  300.    -   service 
  301.    -   service with driver (only on WinNT)
  302.  
  303. 4) Which part of the Radmin system caused a problem 
  304.    -   Client (Radmin.exe)
  305.    -   Server (r_server.exe)
  306.    -   Driver (raddrv.dll) (Only on WinNT)
  307.  
  308. 5) Screen resolution and a color type of the screen on a client side
  309. Example : 1024 X 768 X 65535 colors                      
  310.  
  311. 6) Screen resolution and a color type of the screen on a server side
  312. Example : 800 X 600 X 256 colors
  313.  
  314. 8) If you have any problems with a video hook driver, please specify the model
  315.    of your video card and the version and manufacturer of video drivers,
  316.    which you are using (this information  can be found in 
  317.    Display Properties from Control Panel)

  319. 9) Please specify a situation in which the problem occurs 
  320.    (may be, the problem occurred when you did some specific actions ?).

  355. A:If you want to send Ctrl-Alt-Del key to a remote computer, use 
  356.   'Send Ctrl-Alt-Del' entry from the RScreen window menu. 
  357.   That feature will work only when the remote computer OS is WindowsNT and 
  358.   the Radmin server runs as system service on the remote computer.

  360. Q:I can't connect to Radmin server. What can I do ?
  361. A:Test,if you can get connected with the remote host via TCP/IP:
  362.   Type in the command prompt:
  363.   ping remote_host_name
  364. Ex: ping 10.0.0.1
  365. Ex: ping myserver.mycompany.com
  366.   Make sure, that radmin server runs on the remote computer.
  367.   Make sure, that you are connecting to the port, which is equal to the port,
  368.   on which the radmin server is waiting for the incoming connection.
  369.  
  370. Q:What is the 'Connect through host' option in the properties of the connection?
  371. A:This enables you to get connected with the hosts, when there is no direct 
  372.   TCP/IP connection with them, but some computer has direct TCP/IP connection 
  373.   with them and to you. If you run the Radmin server on such a computer,
  374.   you will be able to get connected through it with the target hosts. 
  375. Ex: You have a local network without a direct connection to the Internet
  376.   and the computer that has direct connection with the Internet and the 
  377.   local network. If you install Radmin server in the that computer, you 
  378.   will be able to get connected from the internet with the computers in the 
  379.   local network.

  381. Q:How can I return from the full-screen mode to normal one ?
  382. A:Just press F12. Using this key you can switch between normal and full-screen
  383.   modes. if you want to send F12 key to a remote computer, use 'Send F12' entry
  384.   from the RScreen window menu.

  386. Q:How I can see statistics of the connection (updates per sec, bytes per sec).
  387. A:Use 'Connection info' entry from the RScreen window menu.
  388.  
  389. Q:I obtain a high processor load on the remote computer,

  391. A:Set 'max screen updates pes second' entry to the smaller value
  392.   in the 'Options' dialog of the RScreen window menu.
  393.   If your remote computer works under Win95/98 (or under WinNT, 
  394.   without video hook driver installed) the Radmin server
  395.   can cause a high processor load when the 'Maximum updates per second' 
  396.   value is set to values bigger than 50.
  397.  
  398. Q:How can I speed up the Radmin in the remote screen mode? I use 
  399.   a slow (modem) connection between computers.
  400. A:To speed up, you can disable wallpaper on the remote computer.
  401.   Also, make sure, that 'Strict to 256 colors' checkbox is checked in 
  402.   the Options dialog of the RScreen window.
  403.   If you are connected via modem you can't have update rates higher 
  404.   than 10 times per second, just because a signal can't go from one 
  405.   side to the other and return faster than 10 times per second (ping > 100ms).
  406.  
  407. Q:How can I speed up the Radmin in the remote screen mode? I use a fast 
  408.   connection between computers.
  409. A:If you use Win95/98 OS on the remote side,
  410.   the speed depends on the screen resolution of the remote computer.
  411.   So set a lower screen resolution on the remote computer.
  412.   Besides, set a lower color format 8bpp (256 colors) or 16bpp (65536 colors),
  413.   on some systems 8bpp faster, on some 16bpp.
  414.   Make sure, that your update speed is not limited by the 
  415.   'Maximum updates per second' field from the option dialog of the RScreen
  416.   window.
  417.   If you use WinNT on the remote side without the video hook driver
  418.   installed, note that with the video hook driver Radmin works about 10 times 
  419.   faster and uses much less processor time.
  420.  
  421. Q:Telnet mode does not work, when the Radmin server is executed on the Win95/98.
  422. A:Yes, the Telnet access to Win95/98 is not supported , because of limitation 
  423.   of the command.com - command prompt interpreter of the Win95/98.
  424.  
  425. Q:I can't see the remote screen, when the remote display is in full-screen text
  426.   mode. Is it a bug ?
  427. A:Currently, Radmin can't get screen changes, when the remote computer is 
  428.   in the full-screen text mode. Drawing on the screen isn't performed 
  429.   by GDI (Graphic Display Interface) when the remote computer is in such a mode.
  430.   Windows works with full-screen text modes in an undocumented way,
  431.   via video port driver.
  432.  
  433. Q:How can I install the video hook driver on the WinNT ?
  434. A:If you did not install Radmin server as a system service in installation 
  435.   process, you can do it from 'Radmin server setup': press the 'Install' button
  436.   in the 'Radmin server setup' dialog.
  437.   This installs the service and the driver on the your computer.
  438.  
  439. Q:I have a problem while running some console application via Radmin telnet 
  440.   session. Applications do not work properly.  What can I do?
  441. A:Some Win32 console applications use direct access to a console. 
  442.   Such applications can't work via the telnet mode , because
  443.   the telnet mode on server uses standart i\o streams to
  444.   interact with the application. Just do not run such applications via 
  445.   telnet. You can run such applications in RScreen mode.
