WordPerfect lets you open files created in Microsoft Word. Because WordPerfect and Microsoft Word documents share similar formatting and layout, you can open Microsoft Word documents in WordPerfect, while retaining most of the formatting. When you open a Microsoft Word document in WordPerfect, WordPerfect converts it automatically. However, occasionally, some information in the converted document may not display as it did in its original format.

Importing fonts and font styles
The following table contains the comparable font and font styles available in Microsoft Word and WordPerfect, and notes about how each application handles fonts and font styles.
Import to WordPerfect From Microsoft Word Notes
Underline Underline WordPerfect supports underlining formats, such as wave, double, and line dash dot, and colored underlining. In Microsoft Word, however, the colors of the underlining and the text are the same.
The following types of underlining formats are not supported in Microsoft Word: text and spaces, text only, and text and tabs.
Small caps SmallCaps
Small caps AllCaps Import as small caps because WordPerfect does not have AllCaps.
Strikeout Strikethrough
Word and letter spacing Spacing Character spacing in Microsoft Word is almost the same as character spacing in WordPerfect. Microsoft Word does not support: word spacing, word spacing justification limits, or kerning.
Animated text WordPerfect does not have an animated text feature, so text is lost.
Advance Position
Kerning
Color Color WordPerfect does not have an automatic color as Microsoft Word does. WordPerfect supports full RGB colors; Microsoft Word offers 16 colors. WordPerfect uses a color distance formula to map from its colors to the 16 colors available in Microsoft Word. Any color with high RGB is mapped to white.
Highlight colors
Single underline Text borders
Box shadow
3D custom Not applicable
Font size Font size WordPerfect has font sizes in increments of one tenth; Microsoft Word uses half points. Sizes are rounded to the nearest point size allowed.
Importing paragraph formatting
The following table contains paragraph features for Microsoft Word and WordPerfect that help you import files more effectively.
Import to WordPerfect From Microsoft Word Notes

First line indent Left indent
Right indent
First line indent WordPerfect lets you add an indent anywhere in the paragraph (lines following that indent will be indented).
If there is only a first-line indent, the rest of the paragraph is unaffected.
If you specify a first-line indent and then hit a few indents before typing text, this is treated as a paragraph indent.
If there is an indent in the paragraph after text has been typed, the paragraph indent adjusts the first-line indent to be where it was before the new indent appears, and a tab is added for the indent.

Background color WordPerfect maps what it can from its set of patterns to match those used in Microsoft Word. All other patterns are exported as the Trellis pattern. The foreground and background colors have the same limitations as the other colors (mapping from RGB to the 16-color table of Microsoft Word). If the converted foreground and background colors are the same and the original WordPerfect foreground and background colors were not the same, WordPerfect exports the background color as Automatic.
WordPerfect has page, column, and paragraph shading, while Microsoft Word has only paragraph shading.
Paragraph, column, and page shading are exported as paragraph shading.
Bullets Bullets When you open a Microsoft Word document in WordPerfect, WordPerfect assigns a style to the bullet character and inserts a tab after the character.
WordPerfect does not convert the distance of the bullet from the text or the alignment features, but sets it to the 1/2-inch default.
Microsoft Word 97 has a feature called Number Position, which sets number alignment (right, left, or center) in numbered lists. This feature is not available in WordPerfect 10.

Continuation message
Continuation line Footnote and endnote line-separator properties cannot be changed in Microsoft Word 97. In WordPerfect, you can set the space before or after the separator, as well as the length and position of the separator. Microsoft Word always shows the separator line, and the style of the separator line cannot be changed. Unlike Microsoft Word, WordPerfect has spacing between footnotes and endnotes. WordPerfect conversion, however, does not let you manually set numbers for footnotes and endnotes; it supports only automatically running numbers. In Microsoft Word 97, the footnote numbers must be sequential. The only way to export manual numbering from WordPerfect to Microsoft Word 97 is to set manual numbering from the beginning. For example, if the first five footnotes are automatically numbered and the rest of the numbers are manually numbered, they will not export correctly.
Microsoft Word does not allow two different sections to display footnotes on the same page. Microsoft Word breaks the page at the second section; however, it does not insert a hard page break. This is Microsoft Word behavior. When you export, you must break sections when you change margins, disable columns, or alter headers and footers.

Shapes Drawing objects You can convert graphics from a WordPerfect document to a Microsoft Word document. Certain features, such as wrapping the picture in a frame, are not supported. The wrapping that is supported is the same as it is for text boxes. For advanced wrapping, Microsoft Word uses office shapes, which WordPerfect does not support.
WordPerfect converts text boxes to frames in Microsoft Word. Microsoft Word frames support most of the functionality of text boxes but only two types of text wrapping. The following information is lost or may convert incorrectly when you convert Microsoft Word text boxes: some text wrapping information; properties, such as box stays on page and vertical positioning of text; nested text boxes; linked text boxes.
Cross-references WordPerfect and Microsoft Word handle cross-references differently. WordPerfect defines multiple tags as targets, and then generates the cross-reference, which references all the targets. Microsoft Word requires numbered lists, bookmarks, footnotes, and so on. Bookmark names cannot be duplicated.
There are two conversion options:
1) Create a tag for each bookmark, and have Microsoft Word generate the cross-reference for each bookmark.
This option can be used only for tags defined before the cross-reference command in WordPerfect. Forward references are not supported.
2) Convert the generated cross-references to plain text. WordPerfect uses this option.
Styles

Paired Styles
Paragraph
Character WordPerfect supports many more features in Styles than Microsoft Word. Features that cannot be expressed in a Microsoft Word Style are applied directly to the document whenever the style is used.
WordPerfect does not support the Enter Key Inserts Style function. Pressing Enter inserts the same style.
Graphics styles
Index Index WordPerfect supports the following page number positions for indexes: Text[SPACE]#, Text[TAB]#, and Text[COMMASPACE]#. All other positions are converted to the Microsoft Word default Text[DOTTEDTAB]#. WordPerfect does not convert the page number format because Microsoft Word does not support page number format for indexes. WordPerfect does not convert Use-dash-to-show-consecutive-pages features because they are not available in Microsoft Word. Concordance files are not converted because concordance files work differently in Microsoft Word.
Table of authorities Table of authorities WordPerfect does not convert page number positions and page number formats for tables of authorities. You can use the dash to show consecutive pages.
Lists Table of figures WordPerfect supports the following page number positions in lists: No numbering, Text[SPACE]#, and Text[TAB]#. All other positions are converted to the Microsoft Word default Text[DOTTEDTAB]#, except for the Text[DOTTEDTAB]#, which is converted to Text[TAB]#. WordPerfect does not convert page number formats because Microsoft Word does not support such formats for lists. List box captions are not exported to Microsoft Word.
Table of contents Table of contents The page number position in Tables of contents is not converted in Microsoft Word. WordPerfect lets you specify page number positions for each level. Microsoft Word lets you specify one definition for the entire Table of contents.

Cell height
Cell width WordPerfect lets you set left and right margins in columns. Microsoft Word deals with this as spacing between columns that is the same for every row. You can convert left and right margins by taking the minimum of all the margins in the row and exporting the minimum as the spacing.
Shading and fills in tables are exported. You can export WordPerfect patterns to Microsoft Word patterns. All patterns that do not map are exported as the Trellis pattern. The foreground and background colors have the same limitations as the other colors (mapping from RGB to the 16-color table of Microsoft Word). If the converted foreground and background are the same and the original WordPerfect foreground and background colors are not, WordPerfect exports the background color as Automatic. If WordPerfect finds a table whose columns do not fit in the page margins, the tables are adjusted. However, the original column widths are exported. In Microsoft Word, the tables reach beyond the page margins.

Character Microsoft Word styles convert to the appropriate WordPerfect style. Generally, converting styles works well; however, when Microsoft Word styles interact with direct commands in WordPerfect, the formatting may not be exactly the same as in the original document.
Style names are truncated to 12 characters-WordPerfect ensures that the names are unique.
Graphics styles WordPerfect exports the graphics style as a part of the exported graphic.
Index Index Microsoft Word has many index options. WordPerfect converts only text that is in the XE field command. WordPerfect automatically converts the index by using WordPerfect default settings.
Table of authorities Table of authorities Microsoft Word has many table of authorities options. WordPerfect converts only text that is in the TA field command. WordPerfect converts the table of authorities with the page numbers right justified with dot leaders.
Lists Table of figures Microsoft Word has many table of figures options. WordPerfect converts only text that is in the TC field.
Table of contents Table of contents Microsoft Word has many table of contents options. WordPerfect only converts text that is in the TC field command or styles heading 1 through heading 9. WordPerfect provides only five levels in the table of contents. As a result, levels 6 through 9 automatically become level 5 entries. When users convert a file, WordPerfect uses default style settings to create a table of contents.
WordPerfect places text in the TC field command in hidden text with the mark for table of contents commands around it. Because the text is hidden, you must display hidden text before generating a new table of contents. If you do not display the hidden text when generating a new table of contents, these entries will not be placed in the table of contents.
Routing slip WordPerfect does not convert routing slips.
