  81. This package contains WinGuard (V.2.3) from Cetus Software.  This
  82. document contains only a brief description of the package and its
  83. features, along with instructions for its installation.  Quite detailed
  84. documentation is included in the package, but it is in archived form,
  85. and is more easily read after installation.

  87. WinGuard password-protects Windows 3.1 Program Manager groups and icons
  88. from being rearranged or damaged (accidentally or intentionally), with
  89. the automatic setting of any one of eight protection levels.  WinGuard
  90. can also hide "sensitive" programs (such as Windows Setup, Control
  91. Panel, or File Manager), as well as selected entire Program Manager
  92. groups and individual Control Panel icons, away from guest users.

  94. WinGuard requires the Visual Basic 3.0 dynamic link library,
  95. VBRUN300.DLL, in order to run.  This file may usually be obtained from
  96. the source for this program, or may be obtained on diskette directly
  97. from Cetus Software (P.O. Box 700, Carver, MA 02330).

  99. WinGuard is a shareware program.  This evaluation version includes
  100. all features of the program, and is not crippled in any way.  You may
  101. use it for up to 30 days without charge (see winguard.wri for more
  102. details).  If you like the program, and wish to continue its use after
  103. this evaluation period, you are required to pay for the program (see
  104. winguard.wri for more details).  Any fee you may have paid to others
  105. (disk vendors, dealers, etc.) to obtain this evaluation version was a

  143. ===== Installation =====================================

  145. Please note:  WinGuard requires VBRUN300.DLL, the Visual Basic 3.0
  146. dynamic link library file.  Ideally, VBRUN300.DLL should be located in
  147. the Windows System directory (typically C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM) on a
  148. non-networked computer, or in the Windows directory on a networked PC.
  149. WinGuard may be installed without this file being present, but will not
  150. run without it.  VBRUN300.DLL may usually be obtained from the source of
  151. this program, or may be obtained on diskette directly from Cetus
  152. Software (P.O. Box 700, Carver, MA 02330).

  154. The installation procedure for WinGuard is quite simple.  The
  155. package includes a program, "INSTALL.EXE", which automates the
  156. entire process.  You will need about 1 MB of available disk space
  157. on the hard drive on which you plan to install WinGuard (though this
  158. is reduced to about 600 KB if VBRUN300.DLL is already installed).
  159.  
  160. The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received
  161. WinGuard.
  162.  
  163.  
  164. INSTALLING FROM DISKETTE
  165.  
  166. To install from diskette, you need to perform the following steps.
  167.  
  168.    o  Place the WinGuard distribution diskette in the
  169.       appropriate diskette drive.
  170.  
  171.    o  While running Windows, execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program on the
  172.       distribution diskette.  For example, if the distribution
  173.       diskette is on drive A:, type "A:\INSTALL" on the Run Line
  174.       available in Program Manager's File Menu.
  175.  
  176.    o  Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
  177.       You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
  178.       are actually made to the contents of your hard drive.

  181. INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
  182.  
  183. If you downloaded WinGuard from a BBS (or received it in the form of
  184. archive files from some other source), you will need to perform the
  185. following steps.
  186.  
  187.    o  Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
  188.       directory on your hard drive.  The procedure for doing this
  189.       varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
  190.       In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
  191.       that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
  192.       perform this step.  If not, you should be able to obtain
  193.       directions for this from the same source from which you received
  194.       the package.
  195.  
  196.    o  Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program which you have extracted.  For
  197.       example, if the temporary directory into which you have extracted
  198.       the WinGuard package is C:\TEMPDIR, you would execute the
  199.       command, "C:\TEMPDIR\INSTALL" by double-clicking on the
  200.       "INSTALL.EXE" filename in the "C:\TEMPDIR" directory in File
  201.       Manager.

  203.    o  Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
  204.       You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
  205.       are actually made to the contents of your hard drive.

  207.    o  When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you
  208.       should delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed
  209.       WinGuard (C:\TEMPDIR, in the above discussion), including all its
  210.       contents.

  215. Once you've complete the installation, you should consult the documents
  216. which have been installed.  In particular, read at least the text files
  217. installed as icons in the WinGuard group in Program Manager.  You should
  218. be THOROUGHLY familiar with the effects of ANY protection level or
  219. security feature BEFORE invoking it.

  221. VERY IMPORTANT !!!  When hiding Program Manager program groups, you MUST
  222. make certain that you do NOT hide WinGuard's own icon !!!
